Rival Supporters Keep Up Verbal Clash In Worsening Crisis

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 19 (Bernama) -- Supporters of the warring camps in the MCA held a flurry of media conferences to argue their cause a day after the party was plunged into greater turmoil following the revamp of the presidential council Wednesday.

Newly appointed presidential council member Datuk Ti Lien Ker said the media had been misled into making headlines that suggested the party's "greater unity plan" (GUP) had failed or that there were abuses.

"Words uttered to the effect of 'chop, slash and burn' are a distortion of reality. The dramatics of breaking down in public is a political drama," he said.

He was referring to the press conference held by vice-president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai who was flanked by teary-faced Youth chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong and Wanita chief Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun who were dropped from the presidential council.

Ti said Chew was still the Wanita chief and should be thankful to party president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat who had appointed both Wanita national organising secretary Tan Cheng Liang and Wanita secretary-general Senator Heng Seai Kie to the presidential council.

"The Youth deputy chief Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon is also appointed in the presidential council, why does the Youth man think there is no representative?" Ti asked.

Ti also said that there was also no reason for Barisan Nasional component parties to interfere in the MCA internal crisis.

He also urged the grassroots not to attend the Nov 28 extraordinary general meeting (EGM) called by Liow's supporters and instead close ranks to make the GUP work.

At another media conference called by nine MCA national Youth central committee members, group spokesman member Chong Sin Woon said intervention Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak would help regain MCA's integrity at the grassroots.

"The only solution to win back the party's integrity among the grassroots is to call for a fresh election before the year end; we can use the annual general meeting to be held on Dec 5 as a venue to call for a fresh election," he said.

Chong also challenged the Ong and deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek to contest in the fresh election and prove that they had 97 per cent of the support in the party.

"If they are re-elected by the delegates, we will respect and give them support. Have the guts to face the delegates," he added.

Chong said by removing Liow's supporters, Ong was in full control of the presidential council.

Meanwhile, a Wanita MCA statement said Wanita welcomed the appointments of Heng and Tan into the presidential council but it could not accept that the Wanita chief was rejected.

This was the first time a Wanita head was not appointed to the presidential council and it reflected the "utmost disregard" of the president towards the Wanita wing and an insult to Chew and the Wanita wing, it said.

"Such disrespectful decision also affects the future direction of the party and Wanita MCA," it added.
