Gadhafi warns of 'long-drawn war' after airstrikes by U.S., allies

Tripoli, Libya (CNN) -- Libyan ruler Moammar Gadhafi promised "a long-drawn war" Sunday after an international coalition hammered the nation's air defense as part of an operation to enforce a no-fly zone.

Gadhafi said the strikes were a confrontation between the Libyan people and "the new Nazis."

"You have proven to the world that you are not civilized, that you are terrorists -- animals attacking a safe nation that did nothing against you," Gadhafi said in a televised speech.

Throughout the address, an image of a golden fist crushing a model plane that said "USA" filled the screen.

At the same time Gadhafi spoke, his regime was shelling the city of Misrata on Sunday morning using tanks, artillery and cannons, a witness said.

"They are destroying the city," said the witness, who is not being identified for safety reasons. He said rebels were fighting back.

Sounds of heavy gunfire could be heard during a telephone conversation with the man. There was no immediate word on casualties.

International military coalition targeted air defense positions near the capital for a second day Sunday.

Some Libyans welcomed the American, French and British military forces carrying out air and missile attacks in the first phase of an operation to enforce a no-fly zone.

Others remained fearful of Gadhafi.

Libyans are "afraid to come out because when they do, he attacked them very, very severely," a woman in Tripoli said Sunday. "This is putting terror in all neighborhoods."

The multinational military forces launched the attacks Saturday, convinced that Gadhafi was not adhering to a cease-fire mandated by the United Nations.

American and British ships and submarines fired more than 110 Tomahawk cruise missiles and hit about 20 Libyan defense targets in western portions of the country, U.S. Vice Adm. William Gortney said at a Pentagon briefing.

Nineteen U.S. warplanes, including stealth bombers and fighter jets, conducted strike operations in Libya on Sunday morning, officials said.

Tomahawk cruise missiles are unmanned and fly close to the ground, steering around natural and man-made obstacles to hit a target programmed into them before launch.

A senior U.S. military official, who was not authorized to speak on the record, said the cruise missiles landed near the city of Misrata and the capital, Tripoli.

Scores of missiles were fired in the pre-dawn darkness, and the exact results of the mission were not immediately clear. The United States is expected to conduct a damage assessment of the sites.

The salvo, in an operation dubbed "Odyssey Dawn," was meant "to deny the Libyan regime from using force against its own people," Gortney said.

British Defense Secretary Liam Fox said the Royal Air Force deployed Tornado GR4 fast jets, which flew 3,000 miles from the United Kingdom and back -- making the venture the longest-range bombing mission conducted by the force since the Falklands conflict in 1982.

British Prime Minister David Cameron said the international mission "is necessary, it is legal, and it is right."

"I believe we should not stand aside while this dictator murders his own people," Cameron said late Saturday night.

But Gadhafi remained defiant, saying Libya will fight back against undeserved "naked aggression."

In a statement broadcast on state TV, his military said the strikes killed 48 people -- "mostly women, children and religious clerics."

"The majority of these attacks were on public areas, hospitals and schools. They frightened the children and women near those areas that were subject to this aggression," the military said.

CNN could not immediately confirm the claim.

The first international strike against Gadhafi's military took place Saturday when French fighter jets fired at a military vehicle.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has called the regime's violence against civilians "murderous madness."

China's foreign ministry expressed regret and said it does not agree with the use of force in international relations.

Gadhafi vowed to open weapons depots and said the U.N. charter provides the nation the right to defend itself in a "war zone." He has also issued messages to international powers and said Libyans are ready to die for him.

Some residents said they could receive weapons to fight back.

"We received a phone call around 3 a.m. that everyone should head out in the streets," a woman in Tripoli said. "Normal civilians are being able to have machine guns and take anti-aircraft machine guns ... to fire back at the airplanes."

In Misrata, a witness said Gadhafi's forces are targeting fuel and power stations to make citizens believe the damage is being done by coalition forces. The witness, who was not identified for security reasons, said people celebrated allied airstrikes on loyalist positions in the city.

CNN could not verify the account.

In the city of Benghazi -- a stronghold for rebels that was attacked by Gadhafi forces -- fighter jets flew overhead Sunday. It was not immediately clear whom the jets belonged to.

U.S. President Barack Obama is planning for the U.S. portion of the military action in Libya to only last for a few days.

"After that we'll take more of a supporting role," said a senior administration official who was not authorized to speak about sensitive military matters.

Obama authorized U.S. military force on what happened to be the eighth anniversary of the start of the war in Iraq.

In the next few days, U.S. military officials expect to hand over control to a coalition commander. Canada and Italy are also part of the coalition.

Violence has raged in Libya following protests calling for democracy and demanding an end to Gadhafi's almost 42-year-long rule. The protests have been met by force from the Gadhafi regime, and some members of his military defected to the opposition.

Another witness in Tripoli said she's terrified about how Gadhafi might respond to the airstrikes.

"We're scared. We're not sure what will happen next," she said. "To be honest, I'm scared for my life."

Was Palani’s ‘back-to-estate’ call stoked by fear?

Is RM850 a month enough for a family man in Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak's high income Malaysia?

KUALA LUMPUR: Does MIC’s future in Barisan Nasional (BN) lie in getting Indians to return to the estates?

Talk has it that president G Palanivel’s ‘back-to-estate’ call may have been stoked by desperate Umno-sympathisers who are concerned that to ensure MIC’s political future in Umno-led BN, it has to boost its support in the rural areas after having lost its sway over urban Indians.

According to Malacca based PKR leader G Rajandran, MIC is facing a ‘huge problem’ gaining votes from Indians especially in urban areas.

“By sending back the Indian community to estates, it is easy for MIC (and Umno-BN) to ‘control’ them.

“We all know that Sime Darby is a BN (Barisan Nasional) crony company,” Rajandran said, adding that plantation and estates were now directly under Palanivel’s ministerial purview.

Rajandran was alluding to Deputy Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Palanivel’s contentious call earlier this month for Indians to return to estates which were facing shortage of workers.

Palanivel had reportedly said that the government had agreed to a minimum wage of about RM700 a month for the sector, compared to RM300 previously and that they would also be provided with free housing as well as free transportation for students.

In addition he said cost of living in estates were low and the environment secure.

Palanivel, had for reasons best known to himself, cited Sime Darby estates.

Have Felcra-style schemes

Sime Darby, a government linked companny (GLC), manages 130 oil palm plantations and some nine rubber estates in Malaysia.

According to Rajandran, the ‘strategy’ of wooing Indians with free house and other facilities would ensure that those ‘living below the poverty line’ remain a homeless community and dependent on BN for basic amenities.

“Palanivel is urging those living below the poverty line to go back to the estates.

“He should know that almost 50% of urban Indians are living under the poverty line.

“I don’t think it’s a good idea to urge all of them to return to the estates.

Rajandran said if Palanivel was indeed genuine then he should, in his capacity as a BN component leader, urge the government to start resettlement scheme like Felda and Felcra for Indians,” he said.

Since his widely reported suggestion, Palanivel has been facing criticism from within his party leaders and outside.

In an immediate reaction to Palanivel’s back-to-estate proposal, MIC Youth chief T Mohan had slammed his chief saying estates would not guarantee a bright future for Indians.

Mohan urged the government to instead provide a Felda-like land development scheme for the community.

He also said the RM700 minimum wage by the government was too small.

MIC failed urban Indians

The Malaysian Consumer Advisory Association (MCAA) also lashed out at Palanivel saying that the president’s call was a ‘reflection that MIC had failed’ to upgrade the lives of the Indians in urban areas.

Said MCAA president M Varatarajoo: “Palanivel’s recent call to the poor urban Indian community to go back to estates for a better life reflects the failure of MIC in the last 53 years under BN government.

“In the early 70s, (former MIC president) (S) Samy Vellu, gave an assurance that all the plantation workers living in estates will
be given trained with new skill to help them fit in at urban cities and areas.

“But this never happened, ” he said.

Varatharajoo said at a time when both Umno and MCA were ‘pushing’ their respective communities to move forward, MIC was instead ‘pulling’ Indians back to the estates.

He also disputed Palanivel’s claim that estate workers would earn minimum RM700 and would enjoy free housing and transport.

“Palanivel does not know what he is talking about.

“A harvester earn RM25.70 for per day. The management gives RM2 Cola (Cost of living allowance) and RM2 pertrol money.
allowance(COLA) and RM2 for petrol money.

“Plantation worker also get RM 4.82 an hour for over-time. With all this they roughly earn about RM760 a month…sometimes they can touch RM1,000 with overtime.

“Now deduct EPF, SOCSO, NUPW fees, water and electricity… at best these workers take home RM850 a month witout a day’s break of work.

“You tell me is RM850 a month enough for a family man?,” asked Varathrajoo adding that Palanivel’s proposal was an invitation to return to the colonial days.

Will Sarawak vote for ‘dignity’ and ‘truth’?

Godfather Taib Mahmud and his rule may be painful to Sarawak's opposition parties, but when it comes to the crunch, the people would choose him over Umno anytime.

When opposition party DAP wrested the Sibu seat from Barisan Nasional last May, FMT opinioned that Sibu had voted for ‘Integrity’, ‘Dignity’ and ‘Truth.’

Going into the 10th Sarawak polls, the opposition groups are hoping that Sarawakians will turn their backs on Chief Minister Taib Mahmud and his BN allies for those very same reasons.

The seemingly united Sarawak Pakatan Rakyat coalition of DAP, PAS, PKR and Sarawak National Party (Snap) will flog the Chinese community’s pride and joy, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.

They will flag his ‘integrity’ and his undisputable success in Penang.

Along with him will come party stalwarts and a legion of vocal headline-making national opposition leaders to awe Sarawak with their humility and street politics.

In the bag for Sarawak DAP are reportedly at least 12 seats, an unprecedented number for a party that won six seats in 2006

All this only if Taib and company do not bar Lim and group from entering the state.

Already word is out that several key opposition leaders won’t make it pass the tarmac at Sarawak airport the moment the Election Commission announces the nomination and polling dates.

The State Legislative Assembly will be dissolved on Monday, according to Taib, paving the way for Sarawak’s 10th election.

In the 2006 polls, BN won 62 of the 71 seats contested.

Dignity and truth

Meanwhile the opposition will stoke the natives’ sense of ‘maruah’ or dignity and guarantee the return of the native customary rights and land, surreptiously taken away by Taib’s policy of development dating back to the 1990s, should they be re-elected.

On the opposition’s factsheet is an endless list of abuse and the massive rape of the rainforests by Taib’s regime which have left natives landless, poor and fending off armed thugs hired by encroaching loggers and plantations.

And then there is the ‘truth’ and the reality of Sarawak life beyond the Kuching, Miri and Bintulu borders where hundreds and thousands of natives live in squalid longhouses with no treated water, electricity or roads despite 40 years of voting BN into power.

Heading into the 2011 state election, the opposition has a smorgasboard of issues, among others, Taib’s immense wealth and business monopoly.

Also to be flogged are issues involving illegal logging, land grabs, poverty, carbotage policy, prices of fuel and basic necessities.

To cap this list, Taib and BN will also have to explain the federal government’s latest blunder involving the bible to the state’s almost 50% Christian population.

Taib himself will receive the brunt of the opposition’s verbosity.

On the cards are demands for him to explain how he managed to amass an unimaginable amount of wealth locally and abroad on his salary as Chief Minister and two other ministerial portfolios, all of which would give him an estimated RM50,000 a month.

Swiss based Bruno Manser Funds have identified 49 Taib-linked companies in eight countries worth ‘billions in US dollars’ and are calling on these countries to freeze his assets there.

Amongst them are 13 companies in Malaysia. In Sarawak the stench of nepotism and cronyism is far reaching. Cahaya Mata Sarawak (CMS) is owned by Taib’s family.

CMS and its related companies hold monopoly over billions of ringgit worth of project. The controversial 12 proposed dams and aluminium smelter plant also bears Taib’s hand.

On Friday, Transparency International Malaysia called on the general public to turn whistleblowers so as to pin Taib on corruption charges.

Confident Taib

The fact is Taib, the once poor Melanau boy who joined politics in the 70s, is now a billionaire with “more money than I can ever spend.”

Taib had actually said this during a visit to a longhouse in Sarawak.

Leading Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), the spine of the Sarawak BN coalition, into polls, Taib will aim to maintain the party’s 35 seats in the 71-seat assembly.

But former PRS information chief Tedewin Ngumbang, who has described Taib as a ‘bully’ who ‘insults’ Dayak, could put a spoke in Taib’s plan.

Ngumbang, who is rumoured to be a proxy, is aiming to field several influential individuals to contest in six PBB seats.

Ngumbang himself is out to slay deputy Chief Minister Alfred Jabu Numpang in the Layar constituencies.

Jabu has held the seat for 36 years and according to Ngumbang, little progress has reached the longhouses in Jabu’s contituency.

Ngumbang aside, PAS too is eyeing four to five seats in PBB’s Malay areas.

Nonetheless Taib is confident that his men will retain their seats.

Unfortunately the same can’t be said for BN ally Sarawak United Peoples’ party (SUPP).

Political greenhorn

In 2006 election SUPP lost an unprecedented eight of its 19 seats to opposition.

It lost six seats to DAP, one to PKR and one to Snap.

An emboldened DAP has consistently declared that SUPP, which has lost its place with the Chinese in Sarawak, will lose much more!

Currently SUPP is riding on PBB’s coat-tails and Taib’s magnanimity.

SUPP president George Chan’s daughter is married to Taib’s son Sulaiman Rahman, the young Kota Samarahan parliamentarian who went MIA in December 2009 after resigning from his post as deputy tourism minister.

Taib’s excuse was that Sulaiman was still grieving for his late mother, Laila who died in April the same year.

But the truth as revealed by PBB insiders is that Taib’s son was ‘spoilt’ and had ‘no stomach’ for his father’s politics.

Taib had hoped to groom Sulaiman to eventually succeed him and keep the political dynasty in the family.

Taib himself is the nephew of former chief minister Abdul Rahman Ya’kub.

Last week, the Sadong Jaya PBB division called for Taib to field his eldest son Mahmud Abu Bekir – who is embroiled in RM400 million divorce settlement – in the coming polls.

A political greenhorn much like Sulaiman, Abu Bekir however has shown hesitance. But a PBB insider had said that if push came to shove Abu Bekir will heed his father’s request.

Brownie points

Meanwhile Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) and Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP), will have to content with Snap and PKR who are eyeing all Dayak majority areas.

The toughest fights are expected to be in many of the Dayak and Chinese majority constituencies.

Taib is said to have made known to SUPP that he is not dependent on them and that PBB together with PRS and SPDP will ensure that BN retains a two-third majority is the State Legislative Assembly.

Both PRS and SPDP go into the upcoming state polls with eight seats each. In the 2006 polls, they each lost one seat.

A rejuvenated Snap meanwhile has declared that it will contest in 40 seats, including 28 Dayak seats.

It is aiming to tout its pedigree as the party that gave Sarawak her first Chief Minister in Stephen Kalong Ningkan, an Iban.

Pundits say that this fact alone, together with former diplomat- chief minister Daniel Tajem at the frontline, will earn Snap many brownie points with the older Dayaks.

Already Snap has announced 16 of its candidates and the constituencies it is eyeing.

PKR, a peninsular based party, on the other hand wants to contest in 52 seats, a ‘feat’ many have described as “ridiculous” because it would mean there will be no straight fights in the Dayak constituencies.

“It’s a waste of funds and resources… they should focus on specific seats and go all out to win them in straight fights.

“Already the party is heading into the campaign with their own baggage ..how are you going to talk about Taib and BN when you have so much dirt in your own backyard?,” asked a party sympathiser from Kuching.

Godfather Taib

Nonetheless, PKR is poised to win about four seats in the coming polls.

All things considered, it is unlikely that a ‘united’ Pakatan coalition, predicted to win some 22 seats, will be able to usurp Taib from his throne.

Ironically enough it’s because Sarawakians in general still feel safe with Taib.

Their bigger fear is of Umno stepping in. They are also uncertain about PKR and its leadership.

To the locals across the board Taib is the only one who can stand up to a pushy Umno, who is ready to steamroll into Sarawak given a whiff of an opportunity.

At the recent BN convention in Kuching on March 5, a PBB woman leader candidly said ‘better Taib than Umno.’

It puts Sarawak politics into absolute perspective.

In land-locked Sarawak when it comes to the crunch, Taib is still ‘adulated’ and is seen as a ‘godfather’ and Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak knows this well.

It perhaps also explains Najib’s reticence over forcing Taib’s resignation.

At the launch of a people’s programme in Kota Samarahan yesterday, Najib said Taib should not be pressured to quit.

He said Taib would do so when the time was right. He would pass the baton to his successor, whom he would groom to “deliver his dreams”.

So yes, the opposition will have their day at the polls and yes they will win their bucketful of seats but Taib’s BN coalition will still retain control over the state, one way or the other.

As for parliamentary polls, now that’s a different matter.

KDN covers up by bullying editors and media

by uppercaise

What is the truth?
KDN answer: Whatever we say it is

• Evangelical Christians say KDN confiscated 3,000 copies of the Malay-language Bible
• Evangelicals say govt had agreed to release the Bibles
• KDN warns newspapers for publishing “false news”
KDN says Bibles were not confiscated, merely “not released”
• KDN says govt did not agree to release the Bibles
• Newspapers publish KDN statement as a “correction”
• Conclusion: “the truth” is anything the KDN says. If not, editors and publishers go to jail (publishing “false news” is a criminal offence under the Printing Presses & Publications Act)

The home ministry has reprimanded newspapers that carried statements by the Evangelical Christian Fellowship that KDN had “confiscated” a shipment of Malay-language Bibles, causing editors to shrink into self-censorship mode.
Self-censorship is abhorrent to those professional journalists who wish to live up to their professional principles and report the truth as they see it.
But self-censorship is the mode preferred by KDN and ruling party officials, as it forces editors and reporters to “play safe” by not reporting events in full, and sticking only to the official line as given by bureaucrats and ruling party politicians.
In the past, warning letters have been issued by KDN, reminding editors and publishers that the ministry expects them to practise self-censorship.
In other words, “self-censorship” is official policy, imposed on editors and not something most professional editors wish upon themselves.
But the fact also remains that, over the years, self-censorship has been internalised by many editors and reporters who see their role as that of supporting the prevailing official view. These editors and reporters see that long-term career prospects and success up the corporate ladder comes from toeing the line.
Editors have been jailed before, as “communists” and as “subversive elements” and as “anti-national elements”. Most of the time, those labels only meant that those editors were the victims of political power plays at the very top.
Repeated threats are now made about “reporting false news” — when KDN or ruling party politicians say that, what they really mean is that you did not report what we want to see.
It shows yet again why government and political control of the press must end, and media control laws abolished. Reform is long overdue — because bureaucrats and politicians continue to use the law as a tool of intimidation, as a form of bullying.
You made me look bad — so now I’m going to shut you up. That’s what KDN is saying.
This is plainly evident from the MalaysiaKini report yesterday about the KDN reprimands:
  1. “The Truth” lies is whatever the KDN says. It is “the only truth”
  2. If someone says something not in line with the KDN view, the media is held liable for reporting “false news”
  3. “The truth” about what the KDN does can only be found in what the KDN says it does
  4. If what others say about KDN does not follow the KDN version, the media are reporting “false news”
KDN has now threatened editors and publishers with criminal action because what the Evangelical Christian Fellowship said about KDN — it was not what the newspapers said about KDN — did not jibe with what the KDN wanted the public to see and hear.
If the Evangelical Fellowship was factually wrong, it is up to KDN to state the facts and let the public judge. If the newspapers factually reported what the Evangelical Fellowship actually said, the newspapers did no wrong.
It is KDN which is wrong. Because, it plainly appears, KDN officials are using the law to bully editors. Because KDN did not like the word “confiscated” but prefers to say “not released”. Because KDN did not like the fact that the Evangelical Fellowship believed the prime minister’s word that the Bibles would be released, and took the prime minister’s words to mean government approval.
In other words, KDN also wants you to know that the prime minister is not the authority. They, the KDN, are in charge. Or so they say. And you editors better go along or go to jail.
True or not? Or is this also false news?

The Malaysian DNA Conundrum – MPF

By Dr.Dzulkefly Ahmad

(I’ve been invited to be on Selangor TV this evening ~5 pm sharing the time with Shamsul Iskandar, the AMK Chief on DNA. Just as I was perusing the many writings and reports about the world-infamous Sodomy 2.0 trial now on-going, an old colleague called. This piece has just been emailed to me subsequently and Im taking liberty to just now post it, for the benefit of all and sundry. Having left academia and medical laboratory practice for more than a decade now, I find this piece this handy and insightful. It has said it all and perhaps a lot better than what I could piece together as it is the colloboration of 3 very distinguished medical personalities. Thank you again, to all you good doctors. Continue serving humanity without fear or favour! – Dr Dzul)

by Dr. Sheik Johari Bux, Dr. Farouq Musa, and Dr. Musa Mohd. Nordin (Muslim Professionals Forum, MPF).

Virtually the whole of Malaysia is now talking about DNA. DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid) has become a buzz word, featuring in conversations at coffee shops; offices and even our august parliament.

We must thank Crick and Watson who discovered the double stranded helical structure of the DNA molecule in 1954 which has since unleashed a plethora of advances in biotechnology. Forensic DNA is one of the many breakthroughs in this research in an impassioned endeavour towards advancing justice through DNA technology.

Justice and fairness should be the buzz word of the rakyat, the parliament , political leadership and the impartial media. This unfortunately is a far cry considering the various statements issued and the nuances of the mainstream media. Overnight, a handful of parliamentarians have turned pseudo-geneticists, shouting for surrender of DNA material ! Some have even sentenced the alleged assailant an unequivocal guilty verdict !

Beginning with the end, it is important to emphasise upfront that with all of the available DNA techniques, conviction cannot be based on DNA evidence ALONE if there are a host of other conflicting and non-corroborative evidence. For example, if a victim claimed rape in a condominium in KL whilst the accused was addressing a seminar in Singapore at the material time, no amount of DNA recovered at the crime scene is going to make any difference.

We hope this would moderate the DNA mania which is incessantly hyped, the latest by the father of the alleged victim.

Notwithstanding, what is worrying from the hypothetical case scenario is, how DNA of the alleged assailant got into the condominium. In the language of forensic medicine, there is an outright breach of the chain of custody in this hypothetical case.

Surrendering blood for DNA testing is NOT the central issue in the current stalemate. Maintaining the chain of custody is the CRITICAL factor for any DNA evidence. It demands a strict record of individuals who have had physical possession of the evidence and the process used to maintain and document the chronological history of the evidence. The chain of custody of the specimens must be strictly guarded to ensure the collection, delivery, testing, storage and rigorous documentation of the results are preserved and protected from any unauthorized and illegal access.

The historic trial of 1998 laid bare the extreme flaws of the country’s DNA squad, by design or otherwise. The grave concern from all quarters, national and international on the conduct of the current investigation is understandable and reasonable given the experience we were subjected to the last time this play was enacted. The accused and family who endured those humiliating moments of the last sham trial must be gutted by this sequelae.

We offer below a short brief on DNA as an idiots guide to the correct medical procedures to be followed in cases of alleged sodomy. It is grounded on back to basics forensic medicine, founded on evidence and not emotions.

If the alleged victim claimed “the latest violation” on 26th June 08, had “counsel on 27th June 08 and reported to police on 28th June 08, it is highly likely that nature’s most efficient plumbing system would have flushed out whatever foreign fluids and tissue deposited within that most currently spoken of orifice. Almost all humans need to answer the big call at least once a day!

Notwithstanding the above, if indeed the alleged accused’s specimen was obtained from the “hole”, it would be imperative to verify the authenticity of the collection to ensure no foul play was involved in collecting the specimen.

DNA from the sample obtained in (2) can then be readily compared with the DNA fingerprint of the accused, assuming his DNA profile from the last trial had been safely archived. That is the role of the National DNA Database. It is hence nonsensical for the incessant calls for the accused to give his fresh blood to perform a match with the sample from (2). Unless of course in typical Malaysia Bolehland fashion, the accused’s DNA fingerprint records have gone missing! This then does not speak well of the professionalism of the investigating team. But then again it is but a recurring theme in so many other investigations of late.

The prime minister and the deputy IGP, amongst others have insinuated that old DNA from 10 years ago is of little or no use in the current saga. Let it be known by all and sundry that there is no expiry of DNA. For purposes of DNA fingerprinting alone, even the Jurassic dinasours DNA can be analysed , unless of course there is a sinister intention for use of the accused’s fresh DNA that is almost unthinkable.

We offer the following solution to the current impasse for the authorities kind consideration :

If at all it is legally required for the DNA of the accused to be analysed from a fresh blood sample, the following is the recommended procedure.

There must be three specimens

(i) Blood from the accused

(ii) Blood from the alleged victim

(iii) Specimen from the “hole”

There must be two aliquots (portions) of each specimen and these must be presented concurrently to prevent any tampering by either or both parties. The chain of custody of the specimens must be strictly adhered.

DNA analysis of the three specimens can then be conducted independently by a laboratory of their choice (both parties getting 1 aliquot of each specimen). A holding watch of each process can be agreed upon.

DNA matching from the above can then be used as corroborative evidence to either acquit or convict. DNA does not lie provided humans handling them don’t.

As all Malaysian citizens would have realized by now, politics and medicine is a very volatile mix. The political sodomy of medicine in the trial of 1998 should make all of us even more wary of the innuendos which the current saga brings to fore.. This, despite the exclusion of the IGP and AG from the investigating and prosecuting teams and all the assurances from the powers that be.

The Malaysian public in particular and interested parties around the world awaits the truth of the matter in this episode of “Sodomy Malaysian Style”. We pray that this time around truth will not be sacrificed at the altar of political gamesmanship!

In ALLAH we trust and HE knows best.

Western warplanes, missiles hit Libyan targets

TRIPOLI, March 20 (Reuters) - Western forces hit targets along the Libyan coast on Saturday, using strikes from air and sea to force Muammar Gaddafi's troops to cease fire and end attacks on civilians.

Libyan state television said 48 people had been killed and 150 wounded in the allied air strikes. It also said there had been a fresh wave of strikes on Tripoli early on Sunday.

There was no way to independently verify the claims.

French planes fired the first shots in what is the biggest international military intervention in the Arab world since the 2003 invasion of Iraq, destroying tanks and armoured vehicles in the region of the rebels' eastern stronghold, Benghazi.

Hours later, U.S. and British warships and submarines launched 110 Tomahawk missiles against air defences around the capital Tripoli and the western city of Misrata, which has been besieged by Gaddafi's forces, U.S. military officials said.

They said U.S. forces and planes were working with Britain, France, Canada and Italy in operation "Odyssey Dawn".

Gaddafi called it "colonial, crusader" aggression.

"It is now necessary to open the stores and arm all the masses with all types of weapons to defend the independence, unity and honour of Libya," he said in an audio message broadcast on state television hours after the strikes began.

China and Russia, which abstained in the U.N. Security Council vote last week endorsing intervention, expressed regret at the military action. China's Foreign Ministry said it hoped the conflict would not lead to a greater loss of civilian life.

Explosions and heavy anti-aircraft fire rattled Tripoli in the early hours of Sunday. The shooting was followed by defiant shouts of "Allahu Akbar" that echoed around the city centre.

Libyan state television showed footage from an unidentified hospital of what it called victims of the "colonial enemy". Ten bodies were wrapped up in white and blue bed sheets, and several people were wounded, one of them badly, the television said.

Tripoli residents said they had heard an explosion near the eastern Tajoura district, while in Misrata they said strikes had targeted an airbase used by Gaddafi's forces.

A Reuters witness in the eastern rebel stronghold of Benghazi reported loud explosions and anti-aircraft fire, but it was unclear which side was shooting.

The intervention, after weeks of diplomatic wrangling, was welcomed in Benghazi with a mix of apprehension and relief.

"We think this will end Gaddafi's rule. Libyans will never forget France's stand with them. If it weren't for them, then Benghazi would have been overrun tonight," said Iyad Ali, 37.

"We salute France, Britain, the United States and the Arab countries for standing with Libya. But we think Gaddafi will take out his anger on civilians. So the West has to hit him hard," said civil servant Khalid al-Ghurfaly, 38.

GADDAFI SEEN LOSING GRIP ON LIBYA

The air strikes, launched from a flotilla of some 25 coalition ships, including three U.S. submarines, in the Mediterranean, followed a meeting in Paris of Western and Arab leaders backing the intervention.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy said participants had agreed to use "all necessary means, especially military" to enforce the Security Council resolution calling for an end to attacks on civilians.

"Colonel Gaddafi has made this happen," British Prime Minister David Cameron told reporters after the meeting. "We cannot allow the slaughter of civilians to continue."

Some analysts have questioned the strategy for the military intervention, fearing Western forces might be sucked into a long civil war despite a U.S. insistence -- repeated on Saturday -- that it has no plans to send ground troops into Libya.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper suggested that outside powers hoped their intervention would be enough to turn the tide against Gaddafi and allow Libyans to force him out.

"It is our belief that if Mr. Gaddafi loses the capacity to enforce his will through vastly superior armed forces, he simply will not be able to sustain his grip on the country."

But analysts have questioned what Western powers will do if the Libyan leader digs in, especially since they do not believe they would be satisfied with a de facto partition which left rebels in the east and Gaddafi running a rump state in the west.

One participant at the Paris meeting said Clinton and others had stressed Libya should not be split in two. And on Friday, Obama specifically called on Gaddafi's forces to pull back from the western cities of Zawiyah and Misrata as well from the east.

"It's going to be far less straightforward if Gaddafi starts to move troops into the cities which is what he has been trying to do for the past 24 hours," said Marko Papic at the STRATFOR global intelligence group.

"Once he does that it becomes a little bit more of an urban combat environment and at that point it's going to be difficult to use air power from 15,000 feet to neutralize that."

The Libyan government has blamed rebels, who it says belong to al Qaeda, for breaking a ceasefire it announced on Friday.

In Tripoli, several thousand people gathered at the Bab al-Aziziyah palace, Gaddafi's compound bombed by U.S. warplanes in 1986, to show their support.

"There are 5,000 tribesmen that are preparing to come here to fight with our leader. They better not try to attack our country," said farmer Mahmoud el-Mansouri.

"We will open up Libya's deserts and allow Africans to flood to Europe to blow themselves up as suicide bombers."

U.S. SAYS NOT LEADING INTERVENTION

France and Britain have taken a lead role in pushing for international intervention in Libya and the United States -- after embarking on wars in Afghanistan and Iraq -- has been at pains to stress it is supporting, not leading, the operation.

In announcing the missile strikes, which came eight years to the day after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, Obama said the effort was intended to protect the Libyan people.

"Today I authorised the armed forces of the United States to begin a limited action in Libya in support of an international effort to protect Libyan civilians," Obama told reporters in Brasilia, where he had begun a five-day tour of Latin America.

He said U.S. troops were acting in support of allies, who would lead the enforcement of a no-fly zone to stop Gaddafi's attacks on rebels. "As I said yesterday, we will not, I repeat, we will not deploy any U.S. troops on the ground," Obama said.

But despite Washington's determination to stress its limited role, Vice Admiral Bill Gortney, director of the U.S. military's Joint Staff, said the strikes were only a first phase.

Earlier on Saturday, hundreds of cars full of refugees fled Benghazi towards the Egyptian border after the city came under a bombardment overnight. One family of 13 women from a grandmother to small children, rested at a roadside hotel.

"I'm here because when the bombing started last night my children were vomiting from fear," said one of them, a doctor. "All I want to do is get my family to a safe place and then get back to Benghazi to help. My husband is still there."

Those who remained set up make-shift barricades on main streets, each manned by half a dozen rebels.

In the besieged western city of Misrata, residents said government forces shelled the rebel town again early on Saturday, while water supplies had been cut off for a third day.

WE RELEASE THE LAND GRAB DATA !

Sarawak Report has made the decision to release the full database of the Land and Survey Department’s recent transactions on rural lands.  For some weeks we have been researching the confidential data, only to discover that of the more than one thousand plots of rural land that have been acquired by the state, the vast bulk have been handed on to close relatives or cronies of Taib Mahmud.

This is a national scandal and deserves full exposure.  So, we now invite readers and the press to scrutinise the land register for themselves and to identify what lands have been taken in their own areas – and by whom.  It is time that Taib stopped hiding behind the laughable excuse that “there is no proof”!

The scale of the larceny is shocking.  The total of land titles handed out in recent years, as calculated by the Land and Survey Department’s own figures is a massive 1.5 million hectares.  Much of this has recently involved the acquistion of Native Customary Lands, which has resulted in the recent spate of well over 200 landrights cases currently going through the courts – cases which Taib’s government is losing, emphasing the illegality of his actions.  For this land the State of Sarawak also calculates that it has acquired a mere  RM 734 million in premiums from the lucky people who received the titles. Set this against the current sale by Taib’s brother Onn Mahmud of a mere 30,000 acres (12,000 hectares), for which he is asking just under a billion ringgit!   The profit from the timber cleared from these lands must have alone dwarfed these pathetic premiums.

The Interactive Land Map

You are also invited to take part in our inter-active mapping project, whereby readers can pinpoint land grabs that are relevant or known to them and add them to our on-line annotated map of Sarawak.

Don’t worry it is easy! We have started it for you by marking out some of the land grabs that we have featured in earlier reports.  You just plot the red blob and add the information.  Shortly after your contribution will be added to the on-line information base for the benefit of fellow readers.

We have decided to embark on this project, because the information that we are presenting ought to be openly available in any democratic state.  Instead, for the past 30 years Taib Mahmud has presided over a scandalous abuse of his people’s trust, by covertly stealing their lands for himself!  Don’t say there is no proof, just look at the companies in the database and then find out who they belong to, or used to belong to at the time the land title was awarded.  Often these companies were quickly sold on by friends and relatives after receiving the land titles from Taib for millions more than the ‘premium’ he had negotitated with them on behalf of the State he was elected to represent. This means money that should have gone to the people of Sarawak went to the Taibs and their cronies instead.

The Land and Survey Department's own recent totals, showing how many land titles it has 'sold', the total number of hectares and the premium received - a mere RM 730 million for a land mass about 20 times the size of Singapore!

Time for transparency
Any procedure involving the alienation of state or NCR lands to private parties, which has happened on a massive scale under Taib, should of course be an open process, so that everyone can see that there has been no corruption and that the best price has been gained for the people of Sarawak.  However, Taib has done no such thing.  As soon as he achieved the position of Chief Minister back in 1981 he moved swiftly to set up what he termed the Land Custody and Development Agency (Pelita) and put himself in charge of it as Chairman and as the Minister of Resources and Planning.  This gave him control over the land.
Just one example - Youthful Elia Abas (daughter of Raziah Geneid and neice of Taib) is handed a 10,000 hectare plantation all to herself!

Within this department he has secretively sequestered lands from native communities and then equally secretively handed them on to whoever he likes – himself, his proxies, his brothers and sisters and nephews and nieces, as well as tranches for political allies and business cronies to keep them obedient to his wishes.  If these transactions had been properly carried out with full transparency these deals could never have happened.  However, Taib just conducted the deals himself behind closed doors!  The term ‘Confidential/CONF’ can be seen all over the Land Registry, because Taib does not want the public to know how cheaply he handed these lands to his family and associates.

The data we are releasing gives details of the lands taken; the companies who took them and the price they paid, along with the dates of the 60 year leases.  This information can be cross-referenced with company information and stock market and sales information that can nowadays be found on the internet.  In this way communities can start to unlock the details of what has happened to their traditional lands.

Till now local people often had no idea that Taib had ‘alienated their land until the logging and plantation companies turned up on their doorsteps, often several years later. Now we invite all the people of Sarawak to check this data and find out if their areas have been already grabbed by one of the world’s richest families or their business associates.

Breakdown of a world class theft
Out of the hundreds of companies which have benefitted from the plunder of Sarawak’s lands we have identified scores already which are owned, or were originally owned by Mahmud family members, before being sold on to a thinly disguised third party owner – usually a crony of Taib.  Below is a list of some of the companies that feature on the Land Register along with the Taib family members they are linked to.  But, with your help, we hope to identify the rest before Taib finally meets his people once more at the polls in just  three weeks’ time:
