A Libyan father killed his three daughters after they were raped by Gaddafi’s troops to lift the shame on his family, a human rights group said today.

The girls, aged 15, 17 and 18 were allegedly assaulted by soldiers at a school in the town of Tomina, near the war-shattered city of Misrata, during a two-month siege.

When they returned home, their father slit their throats in a so-called honour killing, according to Physicians for Human Rights (PHR).

Tun Dr Mahathir: “Part of efforts to disparage leaders of old.”

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 30 - Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has accused PAS of idolising communists and disparaging the founding fathers of Malaysia and Umno.


The influential former prime minister told reporters today that recent comments by PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu "is part of efforts to disparage leaders of old maybe because they are related to Umno and to idolise communists."

"I did not expect this to happen but unfortunately the ones who are pushing this trend is PAS. This trend has continued up to the point where they are idolising communists who killed so many of our security personnel," he said at the prime minister's Hari Raya open house.

Malaysia's longest-serving prime minister said that "there is no reason to say that communists fought for independence. They fought for independence only so they can takeover the country and turn it into a communist country."

"This is not a fight for independence. The ones who fought for independence are Tunku Abdul Rahman, Tun Abduk Razak and others who ensured we are free from the claws of the colonists," he added, referring to Malaysia's first two prime ministers.

He also claimed that "children in schools have been taught that Tunku Abdul Rahman is a traitor to the nation."

Although Dr Mahathir has not always seen eye-to-eye with Malaysia's first prime minister, both have been strident opposers of the communist movement in the country.

On Satuday, Umno-owned Utusan Malaysia quoted Mohamad as saying that the communists who attacked the Bukit Kepong police station during the pre-Independence communist insurgency were heroes.

The newspaper accused him of disparaging the country's armed forces and expressing support for communists but Mohamad, popularly known as Mat Sabu, has since denied the report and accused the Malay-language daily of fabricating the quote.

“Utusan lied...they made up stories about my speech,” Mohamad had told The Malaysian Insider.
“When I checked back and looked at the recording, the word ‘communist’ wasn’t found in my speech,” he said, adding that he will sue the newspaper.

We should embark on a crusade to preach inter-racial unity to propagate basic rights for all, says former ISA detainee R Kengadharan.

KUALA LUMPUR: Fifty four years after independence and we still find it extremely difficult to divorce ourselves from the politics of race.

Why? The communal feeling is still deeprooted and for most of the time, such uncontrolled feelings go overboard creating nightmares.

We often hear racist remarks and comments that create hatred and communal dissatisfaction and this has effectively caused national unity to suffer and deteriorate seriously.

These ruthless and unscrupulous methods employed thus far have created anxiety and unrest among Malaysians.

While most of the statements, comments and remarks were flagrant falsehoods, some however have succeeded in fanning the communal sensitivities purely for personal gains and political mileage.

When there is intense racial agitation and emotions are uncontrollably fanned, this could lead the country through a mischievous and dangerous path.

But these are clearly the works of influential political leaders who use the media in the pursuit of their deplorable communal political propaganda of destruction.

On this independence day, let us re-visit our national obligations and responsibilities, and learn completely to restrain from indulging in inflammatory racist propaganda.

No citizen of this country should feel persecuted and look at another with apprehension and suspicion.
No one should be vulnerable and should seek refuge elsewhere. This would be terribly disheartening and may be a negation of everything our forefathers had believed in and worked for.

While it would be quite impossible to dispel or overcome the deepseated communal feeling, much is however depended upon our faith and trust.

As a country we bear the main burden of responsibility to ensure that communal sensitivities are kept at bay at all times.

Our ultimate goal this independence day would be to embark on a crusade to preach inter-racial unity to propagate basic rights of all races forming our multi racial society.

CHENNAI, Aug 30 (Bernama) -- It was slight reprieve for three convicts involved in the assassination of then Indian prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, after the Madras High Court temporarily suspended their hanging, scheduled for early next month.

On Tuesday, the court stayed the hanging of the trio -- identified only as Murugan, Santhan and Perarivalan -- all members of the now-defunct Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

The court ordered an interim stay for eight weeks.

"It has been 11 years and four months' delay in disposing off the petition. The delay, unless properly explained and justified, makes death penalty immoral, illegal and according to me, unconstitutional," Ram Jethmalani, counsel for the convicts, said outside the court, reported Indian television channels.

The three were behind Gandhi's brutal murder which was carried out by a female suicide bomber on May 21, 1991, in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, while he was on an election campaign.

Last Friday, Vellore Central Prison Superintendent R. Arivudainambi said the hanging was fixed on Sept 9, after Indian President Pratibha Patil rejected their mercy plea.

At the Tamil Nadu state assembly this morning, Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, also moved a resolution urging the death sentence commuted to life imprisonment.

In 1999, India's Supreme Court ordered the three men to be given the death sentence for the crime which took place at the height of an LTTE-led civil war in northern Sri Lanka.

The assassination was said to have been ordered by LTTE leaders after Gandhi sent Indian peacekeeping troops to the northern region.

Another convict, Nalini Sriharan, Murugan's wife, a back-up suicide bomber, was also sentenced to death, but later given life term on the intervention of Sonia, Gandhi's widow, and Congress party president.

Nalini gave birth to a baby girl while in jail and also completed a master's programme in computer science.

The last execution India was in 2004, when a security guard was hanged for the rape and murder of a teenager in Kolkata in 2004.
