‘Hindu girls being forcibly kept in Sindh madrassas’
ISLAMABAD: Hindu girls are being forcibly kept in various madrassas in Sindh and are later forced to marry Muslims, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) MNA Dr Azra Fazl told the National Assembly on Thursday. She was speaking on issue of Faryal Shah (Rinkle Kumari) who was allegedly abducted and forced to marry and convert to Islam earlier this month in Sindh.
While speaking on the point of order, Fazl said that Hindus are facing a lot of challenges in Sindh. She stressed the need for legislation to protect minority rights and to end forced conversions.
Fazl, who is also the sister of President Asif Ali Zardari, highlighted the issue in the parliament at a time when her brother received a sharply-worded letter from California Congressman Brad Sherman urging him to take action to ensure the return of Faryal to her family, pursuant to reports that she had been abducted with the help of a PPP lawmaker.
Nafeesa Shah, another MNA from Sindh also endorsed her colleague’s idea and said that the parliament should introduce legislation on “forced conversions”. Various non-Muslims were being forced to accept Islam as being reported by the media, she observed.
“Protection of the minorities should be ensured as enshrined in the Constitution,” Shah added.
Majority of lawmakers including Lal Chand and Mehish Kumar representing minorities in the parliament expressed concerns over the kidnapping and forced conversions of Hindu girls. They said it was the right of every person to accept any religion but nobody can be forced in this regard.
MNA Justice (retd) Fakhar-un-Nisa stressed on the implementation of laws when it comes to solve the issue of minorities. “Minorities’ rights should be protected at all cost.”
Giving a policy statement on floor of the House, Minister of State for Interfaith Harmony and Minorities
Affairs Akram Masih Gill said that the present government has taken unprecedented steps for the uplift and empowerment of minorities. He said these include fixation of five percent quota in government jobs and declaration of August 11 as the Minorities Day.
“Parliament should enact a law to avoid forced conversions,” he remarked.
Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Shehnaz Wazir Ali said that under the 18th Amendment, four seats have been reserved for minorities in the Upper House.
“During the last few years several laws have been enacted including Human Rights Commission for the protection of the rights of women and minorities.”
‘74pc minority women faced sexual harassment’
LAHORE: As many as 74 per cent of minority women living in Pakistan faced sexual harassment during 2010 and 2011, respectively, while 43 per cent complained about facing religious discrimination at workplaces, educational institutions and neighborhoods.
“Moreover, 27 per cent minority women (Christian and Hindu) faced discrimination in admissions to educational institutions and were forced to take Islamic studies for absence of any alternative subject,” National Commission for Justice and Peace (NCJP) Executive Director Peter Jacob disclosed this while launching a study titled ‘Life on the Margins’ conducted by the commission with rights activists, media and people from various walks of life at a local hotel on Wednesday.
The research, which was based on interviews of minority women, was led by Jennifer Jag Jivan and Mr Jacob while it was assessed by three prominent minority women, MNA Asiya Nasir, Ernestine C. Pinto and Pushpa Kumari, with the coordination of Sobia John.
Giving a briefing, Mr Jacob said the study looked into social, political and economic conditions of the minority women with the help of a baseline survey conducted in 26 districts of Punjab and Sindh, the two provinces where 95 per cent of minorities in the country lived.
“As many as 1,000 Hindu and Christian women were interviewed – the two communities forming 92 per cent of the entire minority population in Pakistan,” he added.
He said the study reviewed the literature available on minority women. Issues such as legal disparity, review of personal laws concerning minorities, religious and gender biases, forced conversions, lack of policy focus and segregated data were part of this study that affected everyday life of the minority women, he said. Forced Islamiat lessons for minorities
Pakistan Muslim League–Nawaz (PML-N) MNA Dr Araish Kumar added to the conversation by saying that the minorities were being forced to read Islamic studies in Pakistan.
“Our students are being forced to read subject Islamiat in the government schools,” Kumar said adding, “If they refuse to study Islamic studies, they are struck off by the school administration.”

The Jagannath Bigroho Temple at Nandirhat, The Sri Sri Jagadeshwari Ma Temple, and the Kalibari Temple in Sadar Upazila were the three other temples that were burnt.
Afsar-ul-Ameen, the Primary and Mass Education Minister in Bangladesh visited the area and directed local authorities to take steps to settle down the situation.
Many citizens of Bangladesh are concerned that the secularism of the country is at risk with such attacks reoccurring time after time. People believe there is a political motive behind such acts, which the public needs to keep in mind so that corrective action can be taken.
Houses in the area close to the temple, which Hindus reside in, were also vandalized. The minority Hindu community is concerned that the governments indifferent attitude towards the attacks happening are leading to an increase of such events decreasing security levels for Hindus in the country.

Around 74 percent of Pakistani women from minority communities -- Christians and Hindus -- were sexually harassed, while 43 percent faced religious discrimination at workplaces in 2010 and 2011, a study said.
Around 27 percent of minority women faced discrimination in admission to educational institutions and were forced to take Islamic studies for absence of any alternative subject, said National Commission for Justice and Peace (NCJP) executive director Peter Jacob.
A study titled "Life on the Margins" conducted by the commission with rights activists, media and people from various walks of life has just been released.
The research, based on interviews with minority women, was led by Jennifer Jag Jivan and Jacob and assessed by three prominent minority women, Asiya Nasir, Ernestine C. Pinto and Pushpa Kumari.
Jacob said the study looked into social, political and economic conditions of minority women with a baseline survey conducted in 26 districts of Punjab and Sindh, the two provinces where 95 percent of minorities in the country lived.
As many as 1,000 Hindu and Christian women were interviewed.
The study looked into issues such as legal disparity, laws concerning minorities, religious and gender biases, forced conversions that affected everyday life of minority women.
During the study, it was found that only 47 percent of minority women were educated, lower than the national average -- 57 percent.
He said the living and economic conditions of women, assessed through income, savings, health and education placed minority women on the margins of social and economic development.
Though 55 percent of minority women saw the social environment as conducive to multi-religious living, around 62 percent of respondents were of the view that in the wake of a religious disturbance, a majority of people would not stand with them.
The study while noting the discrimination related to the Constitution of Pakistan, blasphemy laws and education policy, has recommended policy corrections and safeguarding women's rights.

KOTA BAHARU: Parti Kesejahteraan Insan Tanah Air (Kita) president Zaid Ibrahim has confirmed that he will be contesting in the Kota Bahru parliamentary seat in the 13th General Election.
He emphasised that his decision to contest was not to split the votes of any party but was based on his capability and an opportunity to clear his name.
“The accusation cropped up because my political struggle is not understood.
“We contest because we are capable and because it is a good opportunity. As such, Kita will not contest without direction,” said the ex-Kota Bahru MP.
He was speaking to reporters after launching the Kita election machinery at his house in Kubang Kerian, here, last night.

Increasingly frustrated Sarawak native landowners are taking the law into their own hands as government fails to heed their concerns
KUCHING: Sarawak DAP today warned that more and more frustrated landowners are taking the law into their hands as the state government continued to take advantage of the law to take away native customary rights land from the natives.
“The clear example was an incident in Simunjan on March 13, 2012 when several machineries belonging to Tabong Haji were burnt down allegedly by angry native landowners,” said DAP secretary Chong Chieng Jen.
“I think the administration of NCR land by the state government is appalling in the way it is dishing out land and giving it to crony companies of state assemblymen resulting in a lot of dissatisfaction and frustration.
“The government is using the law and amending it to its advantage and taking advantage of the native landowners.
“That is why nowadays there are demonstrations against the government in respect of their NCR land,” said Chong, who is the Kota Sentosa and MP for Bandar Kuching.
He said that there are more than 200 NCR land cases in court whereby the landowners are seeking claims on their NCR land.
But this he said was not the way to solve the problem.
“The only way to solve the problem is to change the policy; otherwise we are seeing more and more frustrated landowners taking the law in their own hands.
“I think this is not the way to solve the problems, because at the end of the day more conflicts and more unhappy incidents and even violence will happen. This is something we do not wish to see,” he said.
Chong was commenting on the failure of 65 landowners from Balai Ringin to meet the Director of Lands and Surveys at the Land and Survey Headquarters yesterday to find out the status their complaints.
No response
Two months ago the same landowners met with the officers of Lands and Surveys regarding their land which they claimed was leased to companies without their knowledge.
“Today the same group came down to find out the status of the investigation when they received no response from the department.
“What happened is that we were stopped by the guards and were not allowed to enter the Land and Survey headquarters even when it was raining heavily.
“We were all drenched outside. And after waiting for more than three hours, we had no choice but to burst into the building. And only then a legal officer of the department came to see me and a few of the landowners,” said Chong.
He said that the director was not in and advised the landowners to write in making an appointment in one month’s time.
“I told him that one month is too long and the landowners will come back in two weeks’ time.
“They will campaign near the Land and Survey Headquarters until the director comes to see them,” he said.
During the meeting, Chong urged the officer to ask his department to issue a stop order against the companies from carrying out works in the affected NCR land.
The officer promised to look into it.
In January some 50 landowners led by Augustine Bagat met with officials of the Lands and Surveys at its headquarters in Kuching urging the department to withdrawal the provisional leases on their land awarded to a number of companies having close links with the state government leaders.
One of the companies is allegedly owned by the former Kedup assemblyman, Frederick Bayoi Manggie.
His company is said to have been awarded 5,500 acres of land, the bulk of it is NCR land.

Let’s be clear about one thing

Over the last few days I have been receiving feedback from various quarters (comments in Malaysia Today being one of them) about my attacks on Pakatan Rakyat. Some feel uneasy and some want to know why I am attacking Pakatan Rakyat.
I suppose if you are a Muslim and someone were to disagree with the Islamic laws of stoning adulteresses to death and cutting off the hands of thieves you would view this person as anti-Islam. That is because you are a Muslim and anyone who disagrees with what you believe to be God’s law would be seen as an attack on Islam.
Hence, those who are opposition supporters would look at things the same way. They view me as attacking Pakatan Rakyat. I am not attacking Pakatan Rakyat. I am attacking the government. Sometimes Pakatan Rakyat gets hit (in states where they are the government). Most times it is Barisan Nasional that gets hit (50 times for every once that Pakatan Rakyat gets hit).
Let’s be clear about one thing. The term ‘turncoat’ came about in the days when if you surrendered or changed sides you would take off your coat and turn it inside out. Hence the term turncoat -- you turn your coat inside out and wear it with the colours inside and not outside.
Therefore, to become a turncoat, you must first have been wearing that coat. If you were never wearing that coat in the first place then you can’t be a turncoat.
I am not wearing the opposition coat, neither DAP or PAS or PKR. I do remember speaking to Dr Hatta Ramli about joining PAS. In fact, the proposer and seconder on my membership application form were Hadi Awang and Mustapha Ali respectively. I then sent the duly signed form to Kuala Terengganu but never heard of it again.
That was 12 years ago in 2000.
That was when I spoke to Dr Hatta to complain that somehow my membership application has been lost somewhere. Dr Hatta laughed and said that maybe PAS does not want someone like me, whatever ‘someone like me’ means.
That was soon after the November 1999 general election.
In April 1999, I was employed by Parti Keadilan Nasional as the media coordinator. Three days after the November 1999 general election, Haji Hamid, my boss, told me that my services were being terminated with 24 hours notice. I told Haji Hamid, Anwar Ibrahim’s classmate in MCKK, that they should at least give me two months notice. 24 hours is a bit unfair.
When I was interviewed for that job in April, Haji Hamid asked me if I was a Parti Keadilan member. I told him I was not because I supported PAS, although I was not an official or card-bearing member. Haji Hamid told me I would have to become a member of Keadilan if I wanted the job. So, to quality for the job, I did.
Of course, once they sacked me from my job with 24 hours notice, I did not renew my membership. And that was when I signed up to become a PAS member.
However, 12 years on, I am still waiting to be confirmed as a PAS member. Maybe what Dr Hatta said is true: they do not want ‘people like me’.
Anyhow, I later spoke to Ronnie Liu and asked him whether I could become a DAP member. This was after I had left Malaysia.
Ronnie Liu told me that it is a complicated matter. And the complication is, I am seen as being at loggerheads with Anwar. So, if DAP took me as a member, this may upset Anwar. So better that DAP did not touch me.
At least Ronnie Liu was honest about why they don’t want me as a member -- to not upset Anwar. PAS, however, never explained what happened to my membership application even after 12 years of waiting.
Anyway, that is the history of my 13 years ‘membership’ with the opposition. Quite funny, won’t you agree? Here I was trying very hard to become a member of either PAS or DAP and they went out of their way to not accept me as a member. Are they that scared of me? Are they worried I would take their job?
So you see, I was never a member of the opposition -- except for a brief period from April to November 1999. By early 2000, my membership in PKR had expired and I never renewed it.
I also never held any party post. I never contested the election as a party candidate. I was never a wakil rakyat -- either state assemblyman or Member of Parliament. I was never employed in any of the state governments under Pakatan Rakyat (or even Barisan Nasional for that matter).
Hence, how can I be a turncoat even if it is true that I am now supporting Barisan Nasional or Umno? And I am not saying that I am.
Anyway, do you remember the March 2008 election campaign? Some of you who had attended my ceramahs in Pantai Dalam, Lucky Garden, Scott Road, Jalan Thambi Abdullah, Pandamaran, Port Kelang, Kampong Raja Uda, Bagan, Jalan Raja Uda, Gelugor, etc., will probably remember what I said in those ceramahs.
I said: let us give the opposition a chance to show us what they can do for one term. Give them just one term, I pleaded with the voters. If we are not happy with their performance then we can always kick them out again. If we can give them power then we can take back that power. If we can make them, we can break them.
And the crowd clapped and roared and cheered. Some came forward to shake my hand and hug me. Some cried. And they did just that -- they voted opposition and gave them five states and 82 seats in Parliament.
So, what has changed? Give them one term, I asked the voters. Try them out for one term. And if you don’t like what you see then kick them out and vote Barisan Nasional back into office.
I told the crowd this. And they cheered and agreed. Have I turned in any way from what I told the crowd back in March 2008?
So, understand what the term turncoat means. It means you are already wearing a coat of a certain colour and you now turn it inside out to display another colour.
I was never wearing any coat of any colour. Okay, I admit it. I did try. But no one wanted to give me a coat. I was left outside, coatless and all alone. Dr Hatta even laughed and passed a remark that maybe PAS does not want ‘people like me’. Ronnie Liu did not want me in case DAP upsets Anwar Ibrahim.
So, I am what they would call in the old days, a ‘freeman’. A freeman, as opposed to a serf, is someone who is not beholden to any lord or master. He is free to either not fight for any lord or master or, if he does want to fight, he is free to choose the lord and master he would like to fight for.
A serf does not have that luxury.
Take note of one thing. I am not whacking Pakatan Rakyat. I am whacking the government that does not perform. At federal level, the government is Barisan Nasional. At state level, some states are under Barisan Nasional and some under Pakatan Rakyat.
I did not campaign for Barisan Nasional in the last general election. I did not ask the voters to vote for Barisan Nasional. I campaigned for Pakatan Rakyat. I told the voters to vote for Pakatan Rakyat and to try them out for one term and see how they perform. I also told the voters that if Pakatan Rakyat fails to perform then we can always kick them out again.
The voters agreed. That was the deal I made with the voters. So it is my moral obligation to fulfil my side of the deal with the voters and expose Pakatan Rakyat in the event they commit a violation, breach or transgression. It is what I promised the voters. I am just delivering my promise to the voters who trusted me and voted Pakatan Rakyat to try them out for one term.
Now, tell me, what has changed? Or are you too stupid to understand what I just said: which will not surprise me judging from some of your comments.

I had had two face-offs with Raja Petra Kamaruddin, and they were not pleasant at all. In fact, I had restrained myself from engaging the royal blogger hiding out in London for the past few years as I felt he wasn't a fighter brave enough to come back to the homeland that is Malaysia to "fight for a better Malaysia".
Three pieces of silver
But RPK enjoys the high life in England because he could enjoy "the best of both worlds", and he especially using his webblog and aallied newsportal named freemalaysiatoday.com to continue regular slandererous and abusive writings against his enemies with half-truths and fictional allegations. His "enemies" have changed with time, and I believe this half-Malaysian and half-Brit has become a mercenary writer and his primary allegiance is to the proverbial "three pieces of silver" of his current paymaster. Many suits await him in Malaysia filed by subjects of his slander, hence his continued "cowardly" absence from Malaysia. What galls many Malaysians is his 180-degree turn from supporting the Reformasi movement for change in government, and concurrently, a principal target of RPK's venom and slander in the past two years has been a potential Prime Minister and current Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim.
Of course, he had before the fallout with Anwar, had also insinuated that Rosmah Mansor, the wife of current PM Najib Tun Razak, wa at the scene of the crime where Mongolian beauty Altantuya Sharibuu was murdered. After several years highlighting this allegation on malaysia-today.net, he recently recanted this allegation against the socalled First Lady of Malaysia. It was also about this time RPKshowed he had been "turned around" -- giving interviews to the pro-UMNO television TV3 and later the the mainstream press, focusing on maligning Anwar whom he had championed as director of FreeAnwarCampaign after the former Deputy Prime Minister was sacked both as DPM as well as Deputy UMNO president in late 1998.
A real liar and a coward, a typical BuMNO
I had some time back made up my mind to delink myself from this fugitive blogger RPK's rants and insinuations after his unfounded allegations against me having passed to him OSA-documents which I dared not publish myself and wanted him to publish in m@day. To this I had rebutted him and following his failure to retract his fabricated stories and to apologise, I wrote an piece titled: " RPK, you are a liar and a coward" which I will recall at the end of today's post.
What made me sit up to write this update was at breakfast this morning when I read the NST frontpage print edition, and now follows the online report reproduced thus:
KUALA LUMPUR: Blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin called opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim “a chicken” yesterday after the latter reportedly requested him to be excluded from a forum scheduled to take place today in Kent, England.
Raja Petra told an online daily yesterday he had received a call from the WikiLeaks organisation informing him that Anwar had disagreed to his inclusion in the forum on the topic of global scenario.
Raja Petra, a former Anwar supporter, took a swipe at the opposition leader for fearing to face him in the discussions, which would have included the political situation in Malaysia. “How is Anwar going to debate (Prime Minister

"He should try me out first before taking on Najib," he said, referring to the opposition's request for a debate between Anwar and Najib.
Raja Petra, who in recent months has been highlighting corruption and abuses of power in the opposition, said Anwar did not tolerate dissent or respect the independence of media.
"He will only deal with people who support him and agree with him.
"If this is Anwar as opposition leader, I shudder to think what he would be like as a prime minister."
The forum, he said, would have originally seen the participation of Raja Petra, Anwar and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.
"So now it will only be Julian and him (Anwar).
"I agreed to Anwar's inclusion but he did not agree with my presence," Raja Petra said.
He said the forum was to be videotaped for a documentary for WikiLeaks, with Anwar participating in the discussion via online communication service Skype.
He also revealed his online news portal, Malaysia Today, and WikiLeaks have recently renewed their contract for the former to cover all of WikiLeaks' exposes in Malaysia.
A United States State Department cable released by WikiLeaks two years ago had revealed Singapore intelligence services stating that they believed Anwar "did indeed commit the acts for which he is currently indicted", referring to the sodomy charges for which he has since been acquitted.
I'm also a blogger, why don't I challenge Najib
As i had once written challenging RPK and his ertswhile lieutenant Haris Ibrahim when they both headed the now-defunct Malaysian Civil Liberties Movement (MCLM) -- "Who art thou in Malaysian politics?" to assume the role of selecting some 20 candidates ("men of integrity", their flag, so RPK and Haris must necessarily be supermen of integrity, yes?!)to run under PKR and DAP banners in the 13th General Elections, and if they were to be elected into Parliament, the MPs would not be answerable to either PKR or DAP but be independent (hence, apparently accountable to MCLM chieftains numbering the demigodly duo, no?!)
I find RPK's namecalling of Anwar as "chicken" amusing indeed, because here's someone hiding out in London daring to label an Opposition Leader thus just because he snubbed the blogger as being fit to speak at the same panel as planned by Wikileaks.
Hey, maybe I could challenger MCA president Chua Soi Lek for a debate, and after one month of silence from him, I also call him a "chicken" for having no guts to face a blogger? Or for unelected Koh Tsu Koon, even an ex-CM of Penang, to challenge Anwar for a debate on national issues, WHAT WOULD BE KOH's locus standi? Only the incumbent UMNO president and PM Najib is of the rank suitable for such a debate with a challenger for the top post in Malaysia, not a chief from any BN component party less UMNO will qualify.
Become MPs first, then only talk
RPK and Haris, my challenge to you from a blogger to another -- Both of you take part in GE13 and become MPs first, maybe then take on peers of about equal level-lah, like YB Zulkifly Noordin or Wee Choo Keong? An UMNO youth leader like Khairy Jamaluddin or even MCA youth chief Wee Ka Siong would even deem you as not equals to be standing on the same platform to debate.
So may I sing the same refrain from the article: "Who art thou in Malaysian poliitics?" that you think you rank equal or remotely qualified to share the same platform as the PM-in-waitingjust because your webbloh has teamed up with Wikileaks? I believe any blogger worth his salt wouldn't take you as an equal, especially when by residing in a foreign land, your loyalty to NegaraKu is questionable, and we writer-bloggers stay back to fight the good fight on Malaysian soil! And don't give us the crap about the government using the Internal Security Act against you when you come back -- only a real chicken ready for the crockpot would use such an excuse.

TERENGGANU: The Child Act should be revised to include the harshest
punishments against child murderers, rapists and those who commit
violent crimes against children, Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said.
The
Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation vice-chairman said it was high
time the Act was amended to allow stiffer punishment for those who
committed crimes against children.
“I feel there is more that can be done to deter those who victimise children.
“Cases
of rape and violence against children as well as baby-dumping have
become more rampant, so the Government must send a clear message to the
perpetrators,” he said yesterday.
On
the cold-blooded murder of five-year-old Nurul Nadhirah Abdullah, Lee
said it was time for the police to focus on crimes against children
instead of wayside robberies and other crimes.
“Top
priority must be given to the safety of children as we want them to
grow up and lead successful lives instead of being robbed of a future,”
he said.
Lee also called upon neighbourhood watch groups to place priority on the safety of children.
“To prevent violence against children, the community must cooperate as well.
“The watch groups can look out for ‘lost’ children and child predators,” he said.

with blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin in Kent, England as inconsistent
with his actions.
The prime minister said, "it appears that he (Anwar) is not willing (to debate with Raja Petra).
"We must be consistent. When we say we practise democracy and we are open, while deploring the government for not being democratic and open.
"But actually, if we look at their actions like barring some newspapers from attending their press conferences... Is this consistent with what they are preaching all this while?"
Najib was speaking to reporters after opening new buildings of Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina Wan Hwa II costing RM9 million in Mengelembu near here Saturday.
He was commenting remarks made by blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin yesterday that Anwar is "a chicken" after the latter reportedly requested him to be excluded from a forum scheduled to take place today in Kent.
