Emergency assembly an option to end Perak crisis, says Najib

By Shannon Teoh - The Malaysian Insider

PUCHONG, MAY 24 - Hoping for an end to the Perak crisis, the prime minister today said that an emergency assembly is an option to end the impasse.

Datuk Seri Najib Razak said this when asked if such a move could short-circuit plans to appeal to the Federal Court by establishing that Barisan Nasional (BN) is in control.

"That is an option for us but it is not the only way to show majority," Najib said of an emergency sitting.

"We hope that there is finality although I understand that there is a high probability of an appeal. They have the right and we accept that," said the Umno president who has been blamed by the opposition for engineering the Perak power grab.

After 16 weeks of dispute, the Court of Appeal had on Thursday declared Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir as the rightful mentri besar.

But Pakatan Rakyat (PR) are ready to make a further appeal to the Federal Court to uphold an earlier High Court decision which had ruled in Datuk Seri Nizar Jamaluddin's favour.

Najib also took a swipe at PR leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim who had questioned the integrity of the judiciary after the Court of Appeal had overruled the High Court.

"He himself tried to establish federal government by defections," he said, referring to Anwar's Sept 16 takeover plan.

"So, the judiciary is right in saying it is legal," Najib concluded.

He also claimed that that several international law experts had supported his view, including Queen's Counsel Lord Anthony Lester of Herne Hill, who advises the British crown.

Teratai 16 freed on bail

KUALA LUMPUR, May 24 - Police today freed 16 people including Teratai state lawmaker Jenice Lee on RM2,000 bail each, three days after their arrest at a candle-light vigil.

They will have to report to the Ampang police on June 10 as part of their bail.

DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang said he has spoken to Lee, his parliamentary aide Lim Swee Kuan and DAPSY political education chief Ooi Leng Heng after they were freed this morning, adding nine were the worse despite the police ordeal.

"Real gold not afraid of furnace fire," the Ipoh Timur MP posted in his Twitter account, which has become his favourite method of communication since last week.

Lee and 15 others were arrested as police crack down on the candle-light vigils that DAP organised over what it called the death of democracy in the Perak political impasse.

Police have thus far arrested 27 people in the three candle-light vigils held thus far. On Friday, police freed five lawyers and 15 detained in a previous vigil.

Police also took Ooi to the DAP national headquarters in Petaling Jaya last night to seize a personal computer and 19 DVDs in its investigations under the Printing Presses and Publications Act.

The DAP said the raid was done without a search warrant and was unprecendented in its 43-year history, demanding prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to apologise for the police action.

The DAP is to lodge a report against the police with national human rights body Suhakam tomorrow.

Know your limits, Najib tells Hindraf 5

By Shannon Teoh - The Malaysian Insider

PUCHONG, MAY 24 - The threat of re-arrest looms for the Hindraf leaders recently freed from detention should they insist on making extreme statements.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak shot this warning to the five who were released from detention under the Internal Security Act (ISA) in light of continuous demands by the Indian pressure group.

Exiled Hindraf chairman P. Waythamoorthy had threatened to organise more public rallies if the ISA releases were subject to review while Kota Alam Shah assemblyman M. Manoharan had asked that all Malaysians born after independence be given Bumiputra status.

"It depends on developments. There are limits to what you can voice out, so do not overstep it," Najib replied when asked if they would be rearrested.

"If they make extreme statements, it is up to people to judge their attitude," he added.

Najib also said that his 1 Malaysia concept promoting unity should not be abused to make unrealistic demands.

I just love a good fight

Rusdi Mustapha said some nasty things about me. Maybe I should allow you to be the judge as to whether what he said is true or not. My comments to his comments are in brackets/italics. Read on and you decide if what Rusdi said is the gospel or a load of bullshit.

NO HOLDS BARRED

Raja Petra Kamarudin

RPK is now a fugitive and, thus far, still a liar!

This has to be said!

I for once (it should be ‘I for one’, not ‘I for once’) do not believe Raja Petra Kamarudin (RPK) ran away, rather than face the court, because he is afraid his Royal family will punish him for being a treacherous to his royal brethren! I for once (same here) do not believe he skips his court hearings because he is afraid, as he puts it, the police will arrest him and throw him in the dungeon.

(The IGP and Minister BOTH made public announcements that the police do not intend to re-detain Uthayakumar. Why do they refuse to also announce that they do not intend to re-detain me? Furthermore, they appealed against the Shah Alam High Court’s decision to release me from ISA detention while they refuse to appeal the same court’s decision to acquit Razak Baginda of the charge of abetment to murder.)

He took off because he is in a fix for he cannot come out with any shred of evidence on any of his serious allegation he made against Prime Minister Najib Razak and his wife Rosmah Mansor!

(If Superintendent Gan would just reply to all the questions posed by my lawyer, YB Gobind Singh Deo, in my sedition trial, then the evidence that Rusdi seeks would be available. Of course I can’t come out with a shred of evidence when they cover up that evidence and refuse to allow it to surface in the trial. Why not Rusdi suggest instead that Supt. Gan reply to the questions so that this evidence that he seeks would be available?)

However, I would also like to believe this man RPK could be suffering from a psychiatric disorder called "Munchausen Syndrome", a malady which is named after a 16th century German Baron Karl Friedrich von Münchausen. According to a definition, Münchausen Syndrome "is a psychiatric disorder wherein those affected feign disease, illness, or psychological trauma in order to draw attention or sympathy to themselves. It is in a class of disorders known as factitious disorders which involve "illnesses" whose symptoms are either self-induced or falsified by the patient. It is also sometimes known as hospital addiction syndrome or hospital hopper syndrome."

(Would Rusdi like to deny that he came to meet me at the Havana Club at midnight some time in 2007 to offer to pay me off to stop writing about Najib and his link to the Altantuya murder? Would Rusdi like to deny he asked me to name my price? Would Rusdi like to deny he phoned me the next day and scolded me for telling Dr Mahathir about it? Would Rusdi like to deny that he phoned me and scolded me for telling Dr Mahathir because Najib screwed him good and proper after Dr Mahathir gave him a piece of his mind? An Umno man by the name of ‘Man Cowboy’ was there that night. Would Rusdi like to deny that as well?)

For the record, RPK has hurled a lot of serious unfounded accusations against the Prime Minister and his wife for being involved in a death, mind you in a death, of a foreign national. That, to me is a very serious accusation. Thus far he has accused the PM of being involved, and the PM's wife had supervised in the killing of a foreign national.

(The transcript of the exchanges of text messages between Najib and lawyer Shafee Abdullah is re-produced below. This was first published in Malaysia Today when I was under detention in Kamunting. So it could not have been me who published it since I did not have internet access in my jail cell. Najib never denied this. He just said that it is a private matter so he need not explain anything.)

RPK also said he has a witness, a Lieutenant Colonel in the military intelligence, who said this witness saw the whole thing, which led him to write a piece in his website accusing the PM's wife supervise the killing. Serious stuff!

(While under ISA detention and during my interrogation I informed Datuk Zambri Ahmad of the Special Branch that my source was Kol. Azmi Zainal Abidin of Military Intelligence. Zamri said he knows Kol Azmi personally. Why do they refuse to ask Kol. Azmi to openly and publicly deny this? Is it because they did speak to Kol. Azmi and he actually confirmed it? And was this also why they quickly packed me off to Kamunting the next day without allowing me to sign my statement cum confession?)

Well so far this has happened! This Lt Col has since said it was a total hogwash and a fabrication on the assertion on RPK's part that he saw the whole thing where a foreign national was blown up and the wife of the PM was there, and he told RPK! We, Malaysians, were led to believe RPK has a concrete proof to the fact! Well, instead of showing the proof so that the PM and his wife can be charged then if found guilty to be hanged or jailed for being involved in a murder, RPK scoot off and ran away!

(What if I can produce the official and signed records of the security personnel to confirm that TWO senior officers from the military went to Najib’s house the night of Altantuya’s murder and did not leave until the next morning? What happened in those many hours they were in Najib’s house? Does Rusdi really want these records made public? Will Najib be able to explain it if I do make them public?)

Then he has the audacity to tell the whole world, in his website Malaysia Today, that he could not attend his court hearings where he has to answer to some very serious accusation he made to the Prime Minister of this country and his wife, because the police will arrest him and hos (I think he meant ‘his’) Royal brethren will kidnapped (bad grammar) and tortured (also bad grammar) him if he were to appear in court at PJ which is in the state of Selangor?! What an insult to our intelligence eh!

(I never said that. What I did do was I published the two e-mails from my Aunty Fuziah below. Rusdi himself has previously posted an article in his Blog where he said that the Sultan of Selangor called me gila. In fact, Rusdi added, the Selangor Royal Family regards me as a sort of outcast of the family. This is what Rusdi himself posted in his Blog. He said this, not me.)

The sad part is what he wrote for his reason why he ran away to be a fugitive instead of facing the music is that many people still believe in his lies!

(Rusdi had better check whether I am running away from something or running towards something. Read my story about crossing the bridge and tricking the guard into thinking you are coming from one direction whereas you are actually coming from the opposite direction.)

Well, I do not how it works but if he is in London, England, I am sure he can be extradited, and if he is in Segambut hiding at YB BABI's house I am sure he has to come out sooner or later.

(Well, let’s see you try to get me. I plan to be the longest fugitive on the run in Malaysian history. And I am going to conduct this guerrilla warfare and keep hitting Umno till it destructs in a heap.)

When that happens I think the Malaysian government will be firmed (bad grammar again) enough to take stern action and do the necessary in finding him guilty of lying and then booked him with the maximum years allowed by the law for his crime against the natural order of logic! This man RPK, he is one totally illogical sad dude I have ever come across!

(You have to catch me first.)

Enough already!

Rusdi Mustapha

Dear Peter,

I am sending you this letter as you have not responded to my telephone calls nor to my telephone message inviting you to the house on Saturday afternoon to talk over family matters particularly in connection with the open letter to Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin which you posted in your blog on 2nd March 2009.

As you already know, I admire your ability to write and express your thoughts, ideas and comments about events in your blog especially your mastery of the English language. I have also often reminded you that truth should always prevail in communicating these things to the public. It is also not for you to decide “what is clearly lawful”.

Had Tok Uda been alive, he would have considered the content and manner of what you wrote in the open letter to Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin, as a betrayal of the code of conduct and values which he had subscribed to, cherished and passed on to us. And for this, to have come from his favourite grandson would certainly have made him collapse in a state of shock.

While Tok Uda, as a true royalist had demanded loyalty and the upholding of family honour, tradition and adat, he had, on many occasions also emphasized that we are entitled to our own personal views, accepted our sense and spirit of adventure, freedom of thought and action as you may well have known from the family history. But “RESPECT FOR THE LAWS OF THE COUNTRY” or “UPHOLDING LAW AND ORDER “ was his cardinal principle, to be dearly valued and respected by the family at all times.

I believe that in the case of the open letter, you have crossed the line. Such writings would appear to be seditious. Therefore, for the sake of Tok Uda, and, in upholding the family honour, I feel that the only discourse open is to diffuse/redeem this and for you to apologize through your blog to the rulers and the public.

We all love you Peter in our own small ways but I have this task to keep the family together, so help me Peter. And so help me too, Ya-Allah.

With my personal good wishes and love to you and Marina and the family,

I remain,

Yours,

Aunty Fuziah

3 things can happen. Firstly, they can ask for more time for detention. We will resist. Second, they have to release him by Friday or thirdly charge him by Friday. Police took him to his office for document search. Nothing incriminating found. Now they are recording stmt from him. Later search in house. Under control so far Dato Seri. Salam, shafee

Any news about RB ?

S2N

Date: 10/11/2006 15:19:40

Dato Seri, Negotiating for conditional release. If not police need 2 or 3 more days extention. I suspect its an exercise in public relation as they do not want public to think a VIP was given an easier time. Being a vip under these conditions is a liability. Otherwise we are on track according to plan. Salam, Shafee

N2S

Date: 10/11/2006 15:27:01

Thanks, he is very stressful according to his wife n would be a huge help if he could get a conditional release latest by sun.

Dato Seri, I was at ghkl ccu 4th floor.RB was admitted due to lung infection:mild pneumonia and asthmatic. This was the pain he was suffering in the chest and unexplained coughing for months. He is under an able physician Dato Dr Jeyaindran Sinnadurai(head of Dept of Medicine)Its good he is resting there than in the lockup. Dna was done to eliminate that he was at scene of crime (paternity can be ruled out as well).Need to see Dato Seri on some concerns. Salam. Shafee

ANy chance of a release by sun ?

S2N

Date: 11/11/2006 08:58:14

Police should release him by then except that I think the police is disturbeb by Media and public pressure. Other factors need be coomunicated to Dato Seri in person. Investigation wise we are on track for release.

S2N

Date: 11/11/2006 09:26:52

It is clear that the Police will ask for extention t'row. I will resist strongly in view of the fact that the last few days investigation on RB have completed investigations that require RB's presence in custody. Secondly, from yesterday the Police has done nothing much with him except to do the dna. Thirdly, I am concerned with the Police carelessness yesterday in allowing the 3 other suspects to be freely mixing and therefore tainting their subsequent stmnts as they could be 'group coached'. But it also show Police no longer need to isolate the suspects. Even RB was handcuffed to the C/I. Salam. Shafee

Dato Seri, Its important you speak to Yusoff Zainal Abidin as he knows the law a lot better in the Chambers. I am confident he is concerned with the negligible evidence agst Razak. The Raja Mahani and Tengku Ariston cases ought to be the guiding critera for AG. They cannot afford another scandallous loss by the Prosecution as in Norita, Ariston, Dato Balwant etc.

Cops: RPK now staying in Brisbane (UPDATED WITH PIC)

By Andrew Sagayam & Royce Cheah, The Star

Police have confirmed that online news portal Malaysia Today editor Raja Petra Kamarudin is in Brisbane.

A police source said the former Internal Security Act (ISA) detainee had contacts in Australia who had arranged accommodation for him and his wife Marina Lee Abdullah.

Raja Petra was not present on Friday to face his sedition trial at the Sessions Court here. The court had issued a warrant of arrest against him after he first failed to turn up in court on April 23 for the trial.

On his news portal that same day, Raja Petra had posted his reasons for his non-attendance, saying he was in self-exile from Selangor because of a dispute with the state’s royalty.

The arrest warrant and a show-cause notice for Marina — who is his bailor — summoning her to explain her husband’s absence at court had not been executed.

The court set July 17 for mention of the case, saying that the next course of action would be decided by judge Rozina Ayob.

Raja Petra has, however, been actively blogging on the news portal with a recent post issuing an apology to the nation for the actions of his son, Raja Azman, who recently pleaded guilty to four separate counts of theft, receiving stolen property and criminal trespass.

He said he and his wife knew that their son was picked up by the police after running into some trouble.

Najib must apologise for what five previous Prime Ministers had not done – police raid on DAP Hqrs as if DAP is a terrorist organization like Al Mauna

By Lim Kit Siang

The Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak should apologise for what five previous Prime Ministers had not done in the 43 year history of the DAP – police raid on DAP Hqrs as if the DAP is a terrorist organization like Al Maunah.

I was enroute to Air Kala for a DAP branch function and had stopped in Sauk for dinner for its famous fresh-water fish, jerawat and malau, when I received a phone call at 6.27 pm from DAP IT manager, Goh Kheng Teong that a police party of 12 in plainclothes had brought along a handcuffed DAPSY political education director Ooi Leng Heng in a police raid of DAP hqrs.

I was unable to tweet the outrageous police action as I could not access the Internet with Maxis 3G and I later authorized Goh to update the twitter on my behalf.

Why has Najib, who had committed himself to an open and democratic premiership only seven weeks ago, allowed the police to go on a rampage to the extent of doing things which the previous five Prime Ministers had not allowed the police to do for 43 years – a police raid on DAP Hqrs as if the DAP is a terrorist organization like Al Maunah.

Al Maunah immediately came to mind as I was in Sauk, which was made famous or notorious by the Islamic cult nine years ago, for its was the site of the four-day stand-off between Al-Maunah and the security forces after the former made an audacious raid on July 2, 2000 on a Malaysian Army Reserve camp and stole weapons from the armoury. Three were killed in the stand-off while three leaders of Al-Maunah were subsequently executed after a trial on charges of “waging war against the King”.

The question many are asking is whether with Najib as Prime Minister and Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein as Home Minister, the cousins are taking the country quickly down the slippery slope of a police state, where the rule of law and human rights are trampled upon indiscriminately without any compunction.

Nobody believes that the police are not aware of the sensitivities of a police raid on the DAP Hqrs, or that it would have taken place without the “greenlight” from the highest authorities.

Who from the “top” gave the “greenlight” for the police raid on DAP Hqrs? Is the Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Musa Hassan, whom I had said many a time should resign because of his dereliction of duties, party to it?

The police raided the DAP Hqrs without a search warrant. The police came to the DAP Hqrs like “thieves in the night” without any notice whatsoever. It was fortunate that the DAP Hqrs was not empty and unoccupied at the time, as Goh and another Hqrs staff Ng Yon Kok were still in headquarters at the time.

Imagine what could have happened if the DAP Hqrs were completely empty of staff during the police raid, when the police would have a field day to search and do whatever they like in the Hqrs.

Is this in keeping with the Police Standard Operating Procedures when they want to search sensitive places like headquarters of political parties?

Will the Police ever think of conducting police raids on Umno, MCA, MIC, Gerakan Hqrs let alone in circumstances like “thieves in the night” completely without notice and when they are completely unoccupied, so that they might be able to do whatever they like there?

Gerakan President and the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Tan Sri Dr. Koh Tsu Koon has been talking about KPIs (key performance index) for Ministers. Is he prepared to be frank with Najib and Hishammuddim that their KPIs will suffer grievously with such unprecedented police raids on the DAP Hqrs?

Are there any MCA, MIC or even UMNO Ministers who dare to condemn the police raid on DAP Hqrs yesterday or place this subject on the Cabinet agenda on Wednesday?

It was People's Progressive Party president Datuk M. Kayveas' warning to those who are calling for a vote of no-confidence against him.

He said he had been patient long enough. "But I won't be patient always."

He was referring to several sacked members who have been calling for a vote of no-confidence against him since last week.

"You don't pass a vote of no-confidence at roadsides or coffee shops. This is the work of people who do not know the procedures," he said after attending the PPP Federal Territory Convention on Thursday night.
Kayveas said the meetings were called by sacked members and, therefore, did not hold water.

Numerous press conferences were held by people who are said to be closely aligned to sacked supreme council member Senator Datuk T. Murugiah.

Among the issues they highlighted were party accounts and de-registration of the party. They also called Kayveas a dictator.

Kayveas said Murugiah and the six other expelled members should first appeal against the decision instead of calling for a vote of no-confidence against him.

"If there is no appeal, that's the end of the story. Don't waste your time writing about him. He is a desperate man."

PPP and MIUP team up to work for Indians

KUALA LUMPUR: The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has joined forces with the Malay-sian Indian United Party (MIUP) to support Barisan Nasional and work for the welfare of the Indian community.

PPP president Datuk M. Kayveas said the pact was formed during the party’s supreme council meeting yesterday following a discussion with MIUP president Datuk K.S. Nallakaruppan during the Bukit Gantang by-election.

“Although PPP only has 48% Indian members, it agrees that the pact will be a good start for the various Indian political parties to work for Barisan.

He said the Indian Progressive Front was also interested to join in but its leadership wanted to hold a central committee meeting first to discuss the matter.

“We want Indian parties to support a stable government led by the Barisan. We will also welcome other Indian-based parties to speak as one voice for the coalition,” he told reporters.

Asked about a possible PPP-MIUP merger, Kayveas said: “We have to start somewhere and we’ll see what happens from here.”

Nallakaruppan said the pact would put to rest rumours that he wanted to join PKR.

He added it would not be a problem for him supporting the Barisan although he was once seen as close to PKR leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“Many Barisan leaders also come in from parties outside the coalition,” he added.

Nallakaruppan said MIUP had about 20,000 registered members.

On another matter, Kayveas said the PPP had not sanctioned a gathering to demonstrate support for sacked PPP supreme council member Datuk T. Murugiah.

He accused Murugiah of abusing his position as deputy minister to hold the gathering.

Kayveas said Murugiah and six other sacked party members had until May 30 to appeal against their dismissal.

One of the six who was sacked, M. Jeyaratnam, said that he would not submit his appeal to the disciplinary board.

Jeyaratnam, who is also Murugiah’s special officer, claimed that the party had contravened the Registrar of Societies regulations for failing to update the party’s accounts since 2002.

“As such, I will not appeal to the board because the party itself is invalid,” he added.

Sex News: 'Sex doctor' gets 10-year RI for drug trafficking

Indopia.in, May 21 2009

Chennai , May 21 A city-based orthopedic, who came to be known as"sex doctor"after getting life sentence for making pornographic films and placing them on internet, was today sentenced to 10 years&aposrigorous imprisonment by a special court here in a drug trafficking case.

Principal Sessions and NDPS court Judge S Nagarajan awarded the RI to Dr L Prakash in a case relating to seizure of 55 grams of heroin from his clinic here in January 2002.

He also imposed a fine of Rs one lakh on the medical practioner, and in default ordered him to undergo a further period of six-month RI. On a close perusal of the prosecution evidence, the court concluded that the case had been proved beyond all reasonable doubt.

"In the above circumstances, I find the accused guilty of offences under the NDPS Act."The judge, however, made it clear that the period of detention already undergone by the accused would be set off against the latest sentence.

Prakash
was arrested in December 2001 for making pornographic films and selling them abroad. He was convicted by a fast track court in February 2008 of various offences, including those under Information Technology Act, and sentenced to life. His case was the first in the country to be registered under the IT Act.

During
the interrogation in the case, Prakash confessed to the police that he was in possession of heroin in his clinic in the city. The police raided his clinic on January 6, 2002, and the same day he was shown as arrested in the drug trafficking case.

Race lined with new hurdles

The Star
By JOCELINE TAN

The looming three-way fight for the No. 2 post in PAS has raised the political temperature in the party and revived the old suspicions between party conservatives and progressives.

NASHARUDIN Mat Isa has become an elusive figure over the last few weeks. The PAS deputy president has been keeping his head so low that he has almost disappeared from the radar screen.
It is rare for him to take calls from the media these days and he has not been seen much on the ceramah circuit. In fact, he has not uttered a single major political statement in months.

“At CWC meetings, he does not say a word. He just sits there,” said a member of the PAS central working committee.

Yet, he is by nature a friendly and chatty person and had once been seen as the new face of PAS, someone contemporary who could speak Malay as fluently as he spoke English or Arabic.

It is strange behaviour by any standards for someone who is contesting one of the most important posts in the party.

The academic-turned-politician has been under pressure for his role in initiating unity talks with Umno. Many party members are still angry about it.

His strategy, as such, has been to say as little as possible; that way, he does not open himself to further attacks.

And it has worked rather well for him. Nasharudin has managed to duck some of the mud being flung in the run-up to the PAS elections next month.

With Datuk Seri Hadi Awang retaining the president’s post uncontested, the No. 2 is now the highest post being contested. Nasharudin is likely to be challenged by incumbent vice-presidents Datuk Husam Musa and Mohamad Sabu, who is better known as Mat Sabu.

The looming three-way fight is making this year’s campaign hotter than the heat wave in the Klang Valley and all because Husam and Mat Sabu are not ulama figures.

The argument is that the No. 2 has to be ready to take over if anything happens to the No. 1. The thought, however remote, that a non-ulama like Mat Sabu or Husam might become president of PAS is probably giving them nightmares.

It has resulted in the revival of the old uneasiness between the conservatives (who include a large segment of ulama) and the progressives.

The supreme irony is that the conservatives had been dead set against Nasharudin in the party polls of 2005 and 2007 because they regarded him as an ambitious upstart aligned to the progressives.

But he is now being embraced by the conservatives and, as they say, that is politics.

This time around, the ulama camp has mounted a strong campaign to defend their turf and the party policy of “Leadership by the Ulama”.

Friday’s silver jubilee celebration of the Dewan Ulama, that is, the ulama wing of the party, at the old PAS headquarters in Taman Melewar was seen as part of the conservatives’ campaign.

The timing of the celebration, just two weeks before the muktamar, was a deliberate reminder of the role of the ulama in giving the party its unique Islamic personality.

Backing of the ulama

The ulama are a powerful voice and their backing has given Nasharudin the edge.

“The showdown has been caustic the last few weeks. They are feeling very challenged that the second-top post might go to a professional. They are fighting back and doing all they can to make sure their candidate makes it,” said one CWC member.

Husam and Mat Sabu have given a formal confirmation about contesting the No. 2 post.

But Mat Sabu had apparently said there would be no “goestan” (the northern slang for going back) for him.

The popular party veteran and activist had told some people in that inimitable way of his: “It is like I am riding a tractor which is going down the hill and there are no brakes. I cannot stop.”

Both have to decide by tomorrow.

The attack on Husam has been dirty, to say the least. There were aspersions of money politics, which came from no less than the elderly ulama Datuk Mohamad Daud, who is also known as Mat Iraq because he had studied in Baghdad.

Mat Iraq had told an ulama gathering in Kelantan: “Bagi baju, sudah kenyang makan, boleh menanglah calon itu (After people get gifts of clothes and their stomachs are full, the candidate will win).”

Everyone knew it was aimed at Husam because he had said that the candidate was someone “who understood about the economy.”

Husam, whose late father was a respected ulama and who has always been very particular about his reputation, was incensed and has denied it.

Making false allegations in PAS is a big no-no and the party’s powerful Dewan Harian (the equivalent of Umno’s management committee) summoned Mat Iraq to explain.

Mat Iraq was caught flat-footed. When asked to show proof of his accusations against Husam, he admitted he did not have a shred of evidence nor did he know of anybody who had received gifts or meals in exchange for support.

At one point, Mat Iraq held up both hands as though in surrender and his bushy beard quivered as he told the council repeatedly: “Saya minta maaf (I beg for forgiveness).”

It was a very embarrassing episode for someone of his seniority and religious standing. It has damaged his credibility.

Target of conservatives

But Husam’s troubles are far from over. Some suggest he is the main target of the conservatives because they see him as a credible candidate. Nasharudin can easily beat Mat Sabu but will have to struggle to beat Husam.

The power of envy and jealousy in politics should not be underestimated, and very powerful forces in the party are determined to stop his rise.

Husam’s political ascent and his closeness to Kelantan Mentri Besar Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat have caused envy among his opponents and even Nik Aziz’s own son Nik Abduh lashed out about it.

Husam had secured the highest number of votes among the three vice-presidents in the 2007 party polls, but this race is different.

People like him and Mat Sabu, in going for the No. 2 post, are also challenging the perception that PAS can only be led by an ulama.

Husam, on his part, may not be able to take the pressure – and the possibility of him backing out is there. Some say he should continue to bide his time as a vice-president and wait for a better time.

Others have their eye on the general election and are looking to a team which can propel the party to Putrajaya, so to speak. The launch of a proposed RM27mil new party complex in Putrajaya was a declaration of the party’s federal ambitions.

To get there, they will need all-round support, especially from the non-Malays; hence the urgency among some party members about electing a top line-up that can take them to the next level.

In the meantime, the storm over the No. 2 post will continue to whip up opinions and feelings.

catatan Penanti

NUCLEAR POWER

1. With the price of oil going up higher and higher, many in this country are thinking about power generation. At one time the Malaysian Government had decided on a four fuel policy for the generation of electric power. We wanted power plants to use either fuel oil, gas, coal or hydro power. We had excluded the use of nuclear power.

2. Why did we reject nuclear power?

3. I am not a nuclear scientist but I believe I know enough of the dangers of using nuclear (fissionable) material.

4. When Hiroshima and Nagasaki were atom-bombed, the scientists who invented the bombs thought that the destructive effect would be only from the huge explosion due to fissionable material. So did their victims - the Japanese.

5. As a result the Japanese entered the destroyed cities to carry out rescue work and to clean up.

6. It was only later that they realised that the residual radiation would cause a variety of radiation sickness and diseases. The radiation remained harmful for a long period after explosion. Even today there are people who had entered the bombed area in those days who are dying of a variety of diseases, including cancer, contracted through exposure to radiation from the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs.

7. I think we all know about the Chernobyl disaster in Russia. Despite thousands of tons of concrete being poured into the site, the power plant is still emitting dangerous radiation.

8. Besides this we should know that radioactive material used as fuel for power generation remain radioactive and dangerous to health after the fuel has been exhausted. The waste cannot be disposed anywhere, not by burial in the ground nor dumping in the sea. It can be reprocessed by certain countries only. This requires the dangerous material to be transported in special lead containers and carried by special ships. Most ports do not allow such ships to be berthed at their facilities. Reprocessing means that the nuclear material again becomes active and harmful to health.

9. The fact is that we do not know enough about radioactive nuclear material. Once it is processed it remains a source of danger forever.

10. We have some experience dealing with radioactive material. In Perak we have a site where we had buried by-products of tin mining (amang) which had been processed to become radioactive and which was used to colour television. We had poured tons of cement on the buried material. More than one square mile of the burial site is barred to humans. The site is still radioactive and dangerous.

11. If we have a nuclear plant, besides not being able to get rid of nuclear waste, we may have accidents which can endanger people living even far away because of the material being carried by water (ground water) and wind.

12. I think the authorities should rethink the idea of nuclear power plants. Scientists do not know enough about dealing with nuclear waste. They do not know enough about nuclear accidents and how to deal with them.

13. Until we do, it is far better if Malaysia avoids using nuclear power for electrical generation.

PPP Crisis Deepen - Murugiah Appointed Party's President

PUTRAJAYA, May 24 (Bernama) -- Peoples Progressive Party (PPP) crisis deepen when party members assembly in Putrajaya today appointed Deputy Minister in Prime Minister's Department Senator T Murugiah as party's president.

Murugiah's supporters to rally tomorrow - Malaysiakini

Some 10,000 supporters of T Murugiah, the PPP’s rising star who was recently sacked from the party, are expected to attend a rally in support of the embattled deputy minister in Putrajaya tomorrow.
MCPX

puduraya murugiah 260908The rally is expected to further aggravate the on-going spat between PPP president M Kayveas and his protege-turned-nemesis Murugiah, who was expelled from the party last Saturday along with six others.

Murugiah’s private secretary NA Shanmuganathan, told Malaysiakini that though the bulk of participants will be party members, members of the public are encourage to attend to hear Murugiah’s side of the story.

“The rally is organised by party members for the members because they want to find out what is really happening, but we won’t stop members of the public from attending,” he said.

The event will take place in the Putrajaya International Convention Centre from 10am to 2pm. Shanmuganathan, a party supreme council member who was sacked along with Murugiah, would be giving the opening speech.

Murugiah to attend

Though the line-up of speakers have not been confirmed, Murugiah - who is also deputy minister in the Prime Minister’s Department and PPP’s sole representative in government - is expected to deliver the winding-up speech.

It is not clear what fate awaits Murugiah, who is an appointed senator. Party boss Kayveas has already said he would recommend another PPP leader for the deputy minister’s post.

Shanmuganathan said among the issues to be raised at tomorrow’s event would include the party’s history, the role played by its first MP DR Seenivasagam, the future of PPP, Kayveas’ unfulfilled promises and what Murugiah can offer as a leader.

Former Brickfields Utara PPP branch chairperson M Jeyaratnam said that the rally would also be discussing the purge of the seven leaders from the party.

“In this case, the accuser is also the judge,” said Jeyaratnam, another leader expelled from the party, in reference to Kayveas.

m kayveas ppp pc 160307 photostatFollowing a war of words lasting several weeks between Kayveas (right) and Murugiah’s proxies, the party supreme council acting as the disciplinary committee, sacked the deputy minister and six of his close allies.

The seven were sacked for allegedly making unfounded allegations against the party leadership and for seeking the deregistration of the party.

However, Murugiah’s supporters have contended that the deputy minister was expelled because he was seen as a threat to Kayveas’ leadership.

Event claimed to be a party EGM

However at 5.20pm, Malaysiakini received a faxed statement with the PPP logo claiming that the event was now a party emergency general meeting (EGM).

The statement was signed by Theebavesagan Katirber, Murugiah’s press officer, who is not a party member.

Meanwhile, Kayveas said that the gathering tomorrow was illegal and stressed that Murugiah was abusing his government position to organise the event.

“How can you call for an EGM when you are sacked from the party? Even if you are not, the party rules state that notices must be issued not less than 14 days from the intended meeting.

“I’m disappointed that a deputy minister would resort to this to achieve his aims,” said Kayveas, when met after chairing the party supreme council meeting in Kuala Lumpur.

Elaborating on his allegations that Murugiah had abused his powers, Kayveas said he had seen the police permit which states that the event was for a deputy minister and his supporters.

“Nowhere did it state it was party function. The police have called the party headquarters to verify if it was a party-sanctioned event and we have replied in the negative,” he said.

Ban Ki Moon stresses freedom of movement, resettlement of IDPs

United Nation Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon, while visiting the largest internment camp in Vavuniyaa, Manik Farm, Saturday for three hours from 9:15 a.m., stressed the need for freedom of movement and immediate resettlement of the more than 300,000 Tamils held in camps. The IDPs also told Ban Ki Moon that they would want the U.N. to take full responsibility for the welfare of the refugees, sources accompanying Moon on his visit said. "The UN has failed in several measures in preventing egregious human rights violations by Sri Lanka against unarmed civilian Tamils during the last several months, and this is the last opportunity to take bold action to repair the damage to UN's reputation. UN should shed its rhetoric on sovereignty and assume full responsibility for the Tamil people," an aid worker told TamilNet after Moon's visit.

Ban Ki-moon

The Secretary General was taken to Manik Farm after he arrived by helicopter in Vavuniyaa at Joint Operations camp of the Sri Lankan forces Saturday morning.

The Secretary General, in addition to stressing the freedom movement and the urgency for resettlement, also noted the lack of basic facilities and urged immediate action to improve the conditions inside the internment camps.

The Tamil refugees told the Secretary General that they look to the United Nations to ensure their welfare, and their primary need is to go back to their homes in their own villages.

Reporters who accompanied the Secretary General unexpectedly received some space to talk to the refugees without any attending Government officials, sources said.

The IDPs complained to the reporters that Sri Lanka military, during its harsh filtering process, has separated many children from the parents.

They also complained of that routinely a selected set of refugee personalities coached by the Sri Lanka military engage with the visitors to the camp, pointing to a former Voice of Tigers (VoT) employee, and said they were happy to have had the opportunity to talk to the reporters this time.

Mr. Ban Ki-moom was accompanied by UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordination John Holmes, Chief of Staff Vijay Nambiar, UNDP Resident Coordinator Neil Buhne, UNICEF country representative Philippe Duamelle and UNHRC Country Director Amin Awad.

Husam: DUN Perak Dijangka Bubar Minggu Depan

"Ia sebenarnya bukan ramalan tetapi maklumat.

STOP PRESS: DAP HQ Raided!

By Lim Kit Siang

First time in the 42 years history of DAP, police raided our HQ.

11 plain clothes police came to the HQ this evening around 6.25pm, brought along with them one HQ staff, Ooi Leng Hang, who was arrested last Thursday at the Teratai vigil and who is still under remand.

The police did not have any warrant of search with them, and the office was not opened. We suspect they forced Ooi to let them in.

They took away a CPU, a 19″ monitor (obviously these officers are computer illiterates), some DVDs, a keyboard and a tablet.

Party leaders, Tan Kok Wai, Fong Kui Lun, Gobind Singh and Lim Lip Eng, who were alerted of the raid, managed to reached the HQ before the police left, which was about an hour later.

The leaders are holding a press conference in the HQ now.

DAP HQ raided, computer etc ‘detained’… what’s next?

This evening, the police raided the DAP office and carted away a computer and related equipment, ostensibly to facilitate investigations.

They brought along arrested Ulu Selangor councillor Ooi Leng Heng, handcuffed and attired in orange lock-up garb.

It’s the first time in history that the DAP HQ has been raided.

And all because 16 DAP activists held a little vigil - or was it a birthday celebration - a couple of days ago?

Now, in addition to being investigated for illegal assembly, the group could be charged under the Printing Presses and Publications Act for circulating a leaflet.

“Tangkap! Tangkap! Tangkap!” seems to be the recurring refrain these days, reflecting the zero-tolerance official policy towards vigils and political gatherings.

Human rights group Suaram has tabulated the recent series of arrests as follows:

5 May 2009
1 arrest – Wong Chin Huat
(He was released on the 8th May)
Arrest at apartment in Seri Sentosa, Kuala Lumpur and taken to Bukit Aman then to IPD Brickfields, KL

6 May 2009
3 arrests – Sani Md Shah, Saufi Mihat, Yasir Sheikh Abdul Rahman
(Released under police bail on the 7th May)
Sending birthday cake to Prime Minister in Putrajaya

6 May 2009
1 arrest – Mohamad Sabu
(Released on the 7th May)
Near the Harakah office in Jalan Pahang Barat, Kuala Lumpur.

6 May 2009
14 arrests
(Released under the police bail on the 6th May)
Candlelight vigil outside IPD Brickfields, KL

7 May 2009
69 arrests
(Released on the 7th May)
Ipoh, Perak

7 May 2009
20 arrests
- Law Teck Hao (arrested on 6 and 7 May)
(Released under police bail on the 8th May)
Candlelight vigil outside IPD Brickfields, KL

7 May 2009
1 arrest – Eng Kiat
(Released under police bail on the 8th May)
Candlelight vigil in Penang

7 May 2009
10 arrests
(Released under police bail on the 7th May)
Candlelight vigil in Sarawak

19 May 2009
11 arrests
- Teo Nie Ching (arrested on 6 and 19 May)
(Released on the 20th May at 3am)
Candlelight vigil outside DAP MP Teresa Kok’s office

21 May 2009
16 arrested in Teratai, Ampang
(They were remanded for 2 days)
- Jenice Lee (arrested on 7 May in Perak ,19 May and 21 May)
Candlelight vigil outside DAP Teratai Service Centre

Total: 146 arrests (142 individuals)

There seems to be a common thread running through nearly all these arrests: mostly public gatherings and mostly related to the BN takeover of Perak.

Sigh, what is happening to Malaysia? Is this what 1Malaysia is all about? Whither democracy?

But we should not despair or lose hope. Much progress has been made over the years in the struggle for democratic reforms. More and more people are yearning for democracy. Those who struggle for truth and justice will prevail in the end.

Polis Jangan Bertindak Keterlaluan

1Malaysia Based On Reality Involving The People - Najib

PEKAN, May 23 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said today the 1Malaysia concept was based on reality involving the people of various races in the country.

He said that in reality the people of all races and religions in the country should be united to make Malaysia a strong country.

"If we can unite the communities into one people with one dream, we can build a stronger and more successful Malaysia," he said when opening the annual general meeting of the Pahang branch of the Malaysian Government Pensioners Association, here. Also present was the branch president, Datuk Abdul Ghani Sulaiman.

Najib said the 1Malaysia concept would safeguard the Federal Constitution.

"Under the 1Malaysia concept, no group big or small will be marginalised and denied attention by the government, whether in the villages, towns or longhouses. All will get attention from the government," he said.

On another matter, Najib reminded pensioners to keep themselves mentally alert by reading.

"When the mind is kept fresh, the body will also be healthy and active," he said.

Najib also said that all the demands of the association would have to be submitted to the Public Service Department before it was discussed in the Cabinet.

Earlier, Abdul Ghani, in his speech, spoke of several demands pertaining to pensioners, including asking the government to provide a minimum pension of RM720 even for pensioners who had served less than 25 years.

He also asked the government to give a compassionate allowance to pensioners every time the government announced a bonus for civil servants and to provide derivative pension to the spouse whom the pensioner marries after retirement.

He said a senator should also be appointed to handle the affairs of pensioners.
