IMG_1596HRP Hindraf’s N. S. Chief Sivakumar fights off 40 Jakim and police officers. Cremates Raj Kumar as a Hindu. Victory against Necrophilia!
From 3.00 p.m. on 7/4/2010 the body of Raj Kumar Kutty, a practicing Hindu could not be cremated as the family was “ambushed” at the Templer Hindu cemetery just before the cremation. At first the family relented to Jakim as they said that they had to verify with their state Director.
The family then telephoned the N. Sembilan HRP and Hindraf who arrived at about 6.00 p.m. The MIC and DAP mandores were present but were doing their usual wayang kulit and playing to the gallery and the press.
In the meantime HRP’s Sivakumar had called for “back up” and within two hours about two hundred Hindraf people power force were at the cemetery. The deceased’s deed poll prepared by his lawyers in 1990 was of help as the family had claimed that Raj Kumar was a practicing Hindu.
Siva telephoned P. Uthayakumar who advised him to proceed with the hindu creamation in accordance with Article 11 of the Federal Constitution (Freedom of Religion) and not to allow UMNOs’ Jakim and the police force to bully them.
Accordingly Sivakumar who was at the ground picked up enough courage, told off the Jakim and police that they had waited long enough, the deceased young children were tired and hungry, and of the mental trauma on the family. He cited Article 11 of the Federal Constitution and proceeded to cremate the body.
The Hindraf people power youth cheered on and dispersed peacefully thereafter under the watchful eyes of the police and Jakim.
Sivakumar was the last man to leave the cemetery at about 11.30 p.m. Victory against UMNO’s bully tactics and religious extremism.
This level of religious extremism, body-snatching, a grotesque form of necrophilia, happens in very few countries including UMNO’s Malaysia. It does not even happen in the world’s largest muslim country, ie., Indonesia.

Selangor Sultan speaks out against too much politics

By Neville Spykerman - The Malaysian Insider

SHAH ALAM, April 12 — The Selangor ruler today urged politicians not to waste time politicking or go overboard while in the state assembly.

“There is a time and place for politics but while in the House use the limited time and opportunity to debate policies which are good,” said Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah while officiating the opening of the State Assembly here today.

The ruler said that state lawmakers must be good example to others.

Nazri asks who is stopping Dr Pornthip

By Asrul Hadi Abdullah Sani - The Malaysian Insider

KUALA LUMPUR, April 12 — Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz today asked Dr Pornthip Rojanasunand to reveal who “forced” her to pull out from Teoh Beng Hock’s inquest.

The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department explained that the government is not able to respond to the renowned pathologist without concrete information.

“Tell me who it is? Is it Datuk Seri Nazri or somebody else? We want to know because we do not know the truth then how can we help her? Anybody can say that they have been forced but we would like to know who has been forcing her,” he told reporters in parliament.

The Thai pathologist's reported pull-out from testifying in the Teoh inquest next week due to political interference has raised fears among the Teoh family and the DAP that the case is being tampered with at the highest level.

The Selangor government has confirmed the Thai pathologist is not returning when the inquest resumes on April 20 but they want the coroner to agree to testimony via video-conferencing.

Dr Pornthip, 54, the director-general of Thailand’s Central Institute of Forensic Science, had reportedly pulled out from the ongoing case, claiming she was forced to do so because of “political pressure” from Putrajaya that could affect her work in southern Thailand.

However Nazri believes that Dr Pornthip is lying because she cannot defend her testimonial in the inquest.

“That is why I said that she is a liar. I do not believe that the Malaysian government and our officials would harass her and stop her from coming because we know that if she has been allowed to enter the first time then why should we stop her from entering the second time. The date was also delayed to allow her to come.

“In her earlier testimony, she has said something that was sensational. It would be obvious that the government is trying to hide something if a high level government official would try to block her entry. It is certain that we would get criticised by the international community if we would have stop her from entering the country the second time,” he said.

The flashy Thai pathologist had testified in court here that Teoh’s death was “80 per cent homicide”, contradicting Malaysian pathologists who say the political aide could have fallen to his death or suicide.

Her second testimony will be crucial to the inquest, and to prove allegations that there was foul play in Teoh’s death.

Nazri stressed that he would have known if it was a high government official that had forced her not to testify.

“If it was a high official then I would be the first to know but I do not know and never once has the Attorney-General met with me to discuss about this. I feel that she is scared that her testimony in the inquest is false and she cannot defend it now. Therefore she trying to find excuses for her not to attend the coming inquest,” he said.

He also ridiculed Gobind Singh Deo after the Puchong MP labelled his statement as “contemptuous”.

“Let him say it. Is he that smart? If he was really smart then he would have been ejected from parliament so many times. Nothing that he says is law. He may be practicing law but a lot of rubbish has been said by him,” he said.

Gobind has said that Nazri’s statement that Dr Dr Pornthip was a liar reflected his ignorance and arrogance and was “contemptuous” of the court process.

Nazri confirms MACC quizzed Nazim Razak, Deepak Jaikishan

By Shazwan Mustafa Kamal - The Malaysian Insider

KUALA LUMPUR, April 12 — Datuk Seri Nazri Abdul Aziz (pic, centre seated) confirmed today that two key witnesses involved in private investigator P.Balasubramaniam’s first sworn testimony in the Altantuya murder had been interrogated.
Mohammad Nazim Razak, the younger brother of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and Deepak Jaikishan were alleged to have made Bala withdraw his first sworn testimony regarding the murder of Mongolian model Altantuya Shaariibuu, who was killed in 2006.
Bala, whose current whereabouts are unknown, had accused the prime minister of being involved in the murder of the Mongolian model only to retract his statement with a second sworn testimony.
“Yes, yes, it’s done already,” said Nazri to reporters at the Parliament lobby when asked whether the MACC had interrogated the two individuals. He however refused to elaborate further.
The Minister in the Prime Minister’s abrupt response came as a surprise after he refused to answer Batu MP Chua Tian Chang question in parliament earlier.

Muhyiddin: BN candidate a local

FMT ALERT
KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin today announced that the Barisan Nasional candidate for the Hulu Selangor seat will be a local resident.
While observers claimed that Muhyiddin's statement is a strong indication that it could be Hulu Selangor MIC Youth chief V Mugilan, some MIC sources begged to differ.

“It could still be (G) Palanivel. By virtue of being the Hulu Selangor MIC chief, he is also considered a local. He has been there for decades,” they said.

Palanivel, who is the MIC deputy president, was the four-term MP of Hulu Selangor prior to his defeat in the 2008 general election to PKR's Zainal Abidin Ahmad.

Following Zainal's death two weeks ago, MIC president S Samy Vellu named Palanivel as the candidate.

However, there was intense speculation that the Hulu Selangor Umno division wanted a different face, namely Mugilan.

Dompok shocked at Musa's unwillingness to push for royalty rise

By Dominic Legeh - Free Malaysia Today

KOTA KINABALU: Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities Bernard Dompok is dismayed that the Sabah government is averse to asking the federal government to increase the payment of oil royalty to the state.

Dompok, who is also United Pasok Momogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (UPKO) president, said he is at a loss as to why Chief Minister Musa Aman is unwilling to raise the matter with Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak.

"It is already a public knowledge we had an occasion to discuss this (increase of the oil royalty from the current 5 percent) with (former prime minister) Abdullah (Badawi).

"We communicate with him and told him how UPKO felt about it...our feeling was that the state can ask for an increase (in the oil royalty)."

"In fact we have said so and we have told the federal government our view that the state can ask for an increase in oil royalty."

But Dompok however was guarded when asked about Musa's stand that the federal government had been generous with funds for Sabah in the past as such it was not important to ask for an increase in the royalty for the state.

Known as one of the few Sabah BN leaders who is unafraid to speak his mind when it comes to protecting the state's rights, all Dompok would said was: "Well, that's always what they said, but I think that, since you are asking me, that is what I feel about it."

"It's not for me to tell what Sabah should do now. I am just saying my personal feeling is that Sabah can request for an increase in oil royalty," he said.

He declined to say whether the the state BN component parties should sit down and discuss about it.

"As far as I am concerned, our views with regards to the oil royalty is still on record even though no attempt or action has been taken since our last communication with Abdullah.

"The state cabinet is represented by various component parties of the Barisan Nasional and I think the individual parties have their own stand on the issue and feelings on the issue."

He refused to be drawn into any debate about whether any other BN component parties in Sabah had brought up the matter with Najib or his predecessor Abdullah.

"We communicated our feelings to the then Prime Minister Abdullah," was all he would say.

He said that UPKO could propose that the matter be discussed at state level during a BN Sabah meeting but tempered his statement by adding: "We already have a functioning cabinet in the state which is composed of all the component parties in the Barisan Nasional (to deal with the issue).

On the call by opposition parties to re-open the investigations into the air crash that killed former chief minister Fuad Stephens and several of his cabinet colleagues on June 6, 1976, Dompok said the party would like to respect the wishes of the families (of those involved in the tragedy).

On Thursday, Moyog Assemblyman and UPKO member Donald Peter Mojuntin said his family was not in favour of re-visiting the tragedy that killed his father Peter Mojuntin and 10 others when their Nomad air crashed on its approach to land at the Kota Kinabalu airport.

"Will a re-investigation of the tragedy bring back any of the victims to their respective families? The families of the victims have gone through years of heartache and sorrow, years of uncertainty, years of trying to figure out who was responsible for their sudden loss, not to mention years of trying to find a closure, so that they can get on with their respective lives.

"I hope those asking for a re-opening of the case realise this."

He was commenting on opposition Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) president Yong Teck Lee and PKR chief for Sabah and Sarawak Jeffrey Kitingan's call for the investigation file on the crash to be reopened to remove all doubts about the true causes.

Yong and Kitingan had said Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah's first hand account of how he was seated behind Stephens in the aircraft but left it just before it was due to take off on the invitation of Harris Salleh was new evidence that should be examined.

Razaleigh, a former Petronas chairman cum Finance Minister revealed this during a talk, “Minyak Sabah Untuk Siapa" (Sabah’s Oil for Whom?) at the Hongkod Koisaan two weeks ago.

He said that he is alive because he decided to accept the invitation by then Deputy Chief Minister Harris to visit a cattle project in Banggi island, with the intention of returning to the State Capital in the evening to sign the petroleum royalty agreement with the state government.

Razaleigh said he was seated behind Stephens and decided to extend the invitation to Sarawak CM Patinggi Tun Rahman Yakub and another person from Pahang.

Dompok was speaking after officiating the final of the Kadazandusun and Murut Song Composition Contest, in conjunction with the Father's and Mother's Day celebrations, late Friday evening.

Menentang Hak Keistimewaan Orang Melayu atau Menentang Pelaksana dan Perlaksanaan Hak Keistimewaan Orang Melayu?

MARILAH KITA BERSAMA-SAMA MEMARTABATKAN DAN MENINGGIKAN KEISTIMEWAAN MELAYU.
By Shen Yee Aun

Sekali nampak memang banyak membantu mereka.

Usaha mereka 50%. Usaha anda 80%. Siapa yang untung dari segi usaha?

Falsafah dan perlaksanaan ini seolah-olah pepatah English giving a person a fish to eat instead of teaching them how to fish.

Itupun penjajah hendak marah Melayu. Kata mereka mudah lupa. Kata mereka jual hak mereka.

Analoginya. Skim Cepat Kaya memanglah dalam masa jangka pendek menguntungkan. Jangka pangjang?

Hak Istimewa Dalam Pentadbiran Awam

Gaji mereka hanya cukup sekadar kais pagi makan pagi, kais petang makan petang.

They are killing their own best students. Mengapa?

Kalau Melayu rugi anda mengapa perlu bising lagi?

Sebab kalau kamu diam.

Mengapa? Semua isu kelemahan, kegagalan, kemiskinan orang Melayu yang ditimbulkan secara tersiratnya hanya menunjukkan parti pemerintah gagal memajukan orang Melayu.

Biarlah mereka nak berdemonstrasi ke. Beremosi ke. Menyerang ke. Buat apa sekalipun.

Biarlah mereka terus menjerit-jerit.

Kini sokong sahajalah. HIDUP KETUANAN MELAYU. PERKASA KEISTIMEWAAN MELAYU.

MARILAH KITA BERSAMA-SAMA MEMARTABATKAN DAN MENINGGIKAN KEISTIMEWAAN MELAYU.

KITA SOKONGA BARISAN NASIONAL SEPENUHNYA DAN SURUH MEREKA LAKSANALAH SECARA MELUAS.

KITA BERI SOKONGAN PENUH.....

Jangan risau.
Itulah strateginya. Atau pinjam pisau untuk membunuh. Anda sendiri tak perlu membunuh. Tak perlu jadi orang jahat untuk selamatkan orang baik. Jadi sahaja orang baik. SOKONG HAK MEREKA.

Mengapa? Semua isu kelemahan, kegagalan, kemiskinan orang Melayu yang ditimbulkan secara tersiratnya hanya menunjukkan parti pemerintah gagal memajukan orang Melayu.

Biarlah mereka nak berdemonstrasi ke. Beremosi ke. Menyerang ke. Buat apa sekalipun.

Biarlah mereka terus menjerit-jerit.

Kini sokong sahajalah. HIDUP KETUANAN MELAYU. PERKASA KEISTIMEWAAN MELAYU.

MARILAH KITA BERSAMA-SAMA MEMARTABATKAN DAN MENINGGIKAN KEISTIMEWAAN MELAYU.

KITA SOKONGA BARISAN NASIONAL SEPENUHNYA DAN SURUH MEREKA LAKSANALAH SECARA MELUAS.

KITA BERI SOKONGAN PENUH.....

Jangan risau.
Itulah strateginya. Atau pinjam pisau untuk membunuh. Anda sendiri tak perlu membunuh. Tak perlu jadi orang jahat untuk selamatkan orang baik. Jadi sahaja orang baik. SOKONG HAK MEREKA.

Solving the insurance headache

thenutgraph.com
IN 2005, there were roughly 328,000 motor accidents with over 6,000 fatalities in Malaysia, out of over 15 million registered vehicles. In all these cases, injured accident victims often looked to drivers' insurers to pay their hospitalisation costs and damages for pain and suffering. Under Malaysian law, vehicle owners must obtain coverage for injuries caused to third parties before their road tax can be renewed.
Given the large number of drivers, vehicles and accidents, any changes to third-party motor insurance would therefore impact a large number of Malaysians. A proposed revamp headed by Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) has come under attack by the Bar Council, amongst others, in relation to the proposed changes.
But, what changes are actually being made to the current scheme? And why are they being made in the first place? Why can't we just stick to the status quo? And will the changes make it easier and fairer for Malaysians who are injured in road traffic accidents?
Information and misinformation
A close examination of media reports reveals that most of the "details" on the new scheme have actually come from unverifiable sources.
A 24 Mar 2010 report by theSun journalists R Nadeswaran and Terence Fernandez quoted "a source" who claimed that accident victims would only be able to claim up to RM100,000 under the new scheme. This seems ludicrous considering that claims can run up to millions, especially if an accident victim is paralysed or brain damaged, and requires round-the-clock care.
As BNM has refused to confirm or deny this claim, several media reports have emerged to rubbish the RM100,000 cap and allege that BNM is "in bed" with the insurance industry. But is it premature for the media to generate hype over information from an unnamed source? Where is this source from? Is he or she even part of BNM? Why can't the source be named?
theSun report also quoted a source saying the scheme could possibly be run by a private company and could cost RM500 million.
Why new scheme?
Suffice to say, at this juncture, there is no verifiable information on what this new scheme is going to look like. Although, according to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in his 2010 budget speech in October 2009, the new scheme would be implemented by mid-2010. Given our government's problematic track record for transparency and openness in formulating policy, it is unsurprising that three months to the deadline, we still have no clue what the changes are.
On 5 Apr 2010, however, after the public criticism, Najib said he would tell BNM to consider the people's plight when formulating the scheme, and to consult all stakeholders. Strange, considering it was the government that proposed the new scheme in the first place. Instead of chastising his own policy makers, Najib would have done better to explain why we need the new scheme in the first place.
But since our prime minister has failed to enlighten us, I will cite some possible reasons for the proposed change.
Legal system
Making an insurance claim from your own insurer can be a tiresome process, what more when it involves claiming from another driver's insurer, which may involve going to court to prove the driver's negligence. Experiencing the Malaysian legal system can be trying, more so if you're grievously injured and don't have enough funds to sustain yourself through the process. Despite recent efforts, it is still an uncertain endeavour in the following ways:

Tun Zaki Azmi
Time — court cases can take anywhere between two to 20 years (inclusive of appeals) to complete. Some plaintiffs are not healthy or wealthy enough to wait that long for compensation. Although the current chief justice has been pushing the courts to work faster, the backlog still exists. It is unclear whether this trend will continue after Tun Zaki Azmi's term ends in less than 18 months.
Liability — Success or failure for a plaintiff is very much dependant on the individuals involved in the case — the judge, lawyers and investigating police officers. The quality, integrity, thoroughness and competence of these individuals may vary greatly from case to case. Enough said.
Damages — Two quadriplegic plaintiffs of the same age and salary could potentially be awarded damages that are extremely disparate. One could possibly receive RM300,000, the other RM3 million. There are no authoritative guidelines on awards in personal injury cases, unlike in countries like the UK. Judges here have wide discretionary powers when awarding amounts for items such as nursing care which could amount to millions.
4  Costs — Even if a plaintiff wins, the costs awarded will probably be insufficient to cover the actual fees paid to the lawyers. This leaves the system open to contingency fees, where lawyers obtain a percentage of their clients' damages although this is considered unethical.
hospital bed
Accident victims have enough to deal with if they have been injured
How do these uncertainties affect third-party insurance? Well, it's certainly no picnic for the accident victim, who already has to deal with the fact that he or she has been injured or maimed. For the insurance companies, the uncertainty poses a huge challenge to their profit margins and pricing, considering they cannot accurately predict what the damages will be for any given case or any given year.
The insurance industry's dilemma is worsened because the government imposes 30-year old tariffs on the insurance companies. Raising motor insurance prices however is as sensitive as raising petrol prices, given the number of people who own vehicles who are legally entitled to vote. But insurance companies say that they are paying out more than twice what they collect in third-party motor insurance premiums. Such a situation is extremely unattractive to businesses at a time when the government is desperately trying to encourage foreign investment and participation in our economy.
Big picture
Any new system that would make the claims process faster, cheaper, fairer and more certain would surely be welcomed by any consumer. Despite the Bar Council president's statement that the current system is working fine, long-suffering plaintiffs and loss-making insurers may say otherwise.
The RM100,000 question is — will our government take the time to conduct proper consultations and produce a workable long-term solution? Or is the Barisan Nasional government merely going to make piecemeal changes, cross their fingers and pray that these would somehow please voters and also attract foreign investors? As long as decisions are made based on popularity rather than principle, whatever new scheme proposed will be doomed from the start.
najib
Is Najib serious in tackling the
issues related to third-party
insurance?
If Najib and his government are serious in tackling the issues related to third-party insurance, extensive consultations should take place with all stakeholders and sufficient time allocated to draw up a workable plan. And this process should be as transparent as possible so that the public does not feel this is yet another nice-sounding initiative that will never come to fruition. Rushing through a scheme to please big businesses, then having to retract it to please voters, ruffles everyone's feathers and ultimately benefits no one. Consumers may expect low insurance prices. But if it is unsustainable and will end up with insurers pulling out of motor insurance or even out of Malaysia, then that has to be avoided.
But can Najib treat Malaysians like adults and explain things, at the risk of being unpopular? Or will he try to play "hero" and end up solving nothing? Only time will tell.

The Labu and Labi Team of Najib and Muhyiddin (Part 3)

By M. Bakri Musa

The Ugly and Dysfunctional Mahathir-Anwar Pair

As leader, Mahathir is essentially a one-man team, a loner. He exhibits the typical alpha-male monkey mode. An alpha monkey could tolerate other males in the colony only if they were to submit to him, or be seen doing so. Any hint of a non-deferring behavior or “dissing” would be dealt with quickly until the challenger is either driven out or fatally finished off. Such leaders have little use for a deputy, partner, or a team. Instead he needs a sidekick, in the manner of a Jim McMahon to Johnny Carson; someone to make the leader looks good and be the butt of his jokes.

Consider Mahathir’s relationship with his first deputy, Musa Hitam. It went well so long as Musa deferred to Mahathir, that is, by being submissive. In the beginning, Musa was exactly that. The moment he began to assert himself or received more attention than Mahathir, it marked the beginning of the end for Musa.

The same dynamics governed Mahathir’s relationship with his third deputy, Anwar Ibrahim. Like Musa, Anwar was only too willing to be Mahathir’s sidekick and to humor him, at least initially. And why not; Anwar was handsomely rewarded, as seen by his rapid ascent in the party and government. Mahathir never viewed Anwar as a threat seeing that he was very much younger and thus could patiently bide his time. That scenario would have successfully played out to the end had Anwar not succumb to the impatient goading of his many impatient and greedy supporters.

Mahathir’s alpha male traits were never more in display following UMNO’s highly contentious leadership convention of 1987 which saw Tengku Razaleigh nearly toppling Mahathir. In the aftermath, Mahathir had to do what every alpha monkey male would, that is, get rid of its challenger.

It did not surprise me that the deputies Mahathir was most comfortable with were Ghaffar Baba and Abdullah Badawi. Both played the role of the sidekick only too well, especially Abdullah Badawi. Unfortunately they, specifically Abdullah, only played the role, as Mahathir found out too late and much to his regret.

Ghaffar Baba also played the second fiddle role exceptionally well, leading many to underestimate him. His inability to speak English merely reinforced the public perception of his shortcomings; many also doubted his intellect. Nothing could be further from the truth. He had a formidable intellect; however being a kampong boy with no family connections, the best that he could aspire to was the Sultan Idris Training College.

Not only was Ghaffar well endowed with innate intelligence, he was also “street smart,” but he skillfully hid both under his characteristic and very Malay humility. Make no mistake, the late Ghaffar Baba could read the Malay psyche very well, a skill that Mahathir usefully tapped. In that respect he contributed considerably to the partnership with Mahathir. Ghaffar was no mere sidekick, as many saw him.

With his vast understanding of the nuances of Malay culture, Ghaffar could have successfully fended off Anwar’s challenge, but Ghaffar knew that his party was in desperate need of new blood. At the same time he did not wish to see the party that he loved so dearly be fractured by an intense rivalry at the top. It was those noble considerations that made him gave way to Anwar, and not, as many believed, his fear of defeat. Ghaffar exhibited class as well as courage in bowing out early in that tussle with Anwar; he put his party’s interest ahead of his own. That is a rarity among today’s politicians.

As for Abdullah, when a previously non-alpha male monkey takes over, it first instinct is to kill all the babies of the previous alpha male in an attempt to eliminate his predecessor’s genes in the colony. This was what Abdullah did by ‘killing’ off Mahathir’s many ‘babies,’ his pet mega projects.

Abdullah’s mistake was not realizing that Mahathir had not been ‘killed’ or banished from the colony. That alpha monkey was still in the same jungle, imperiously perched high up on another tree, the Petronas Twin Towers. He was still very much alive and influential. Abdullah never knew what hit him when Mahathir unleashed his fury.

Because he was essentially a one-man show, Mahathir’s legacy would be at considerable risk once he is gone. We saw that already when Abdullah took over, only that he was so clumsy and inept. Had Mahathir cultivated younger leaders a la Tun Razak to Tunku, or even a not-so-young but a capable one a la Razak to Dr. Ismail, Mahathir would have greatly enhanced the caliber of his leadership as well ensure that his legacy would endure.

I predict that once Mahathir is gone, his long tenure would merit only an asterisk in our modern history, as Mao Zedong is to China’s. Mao ruled for over a quarter of a century. It would be a gross understatement to say that he had the greatest (though not necessarily positive) impact on China and the Chinese. Yet today, if one were to ask the throngs of shoppers at Beijing’s many modern shopping malls who Mao was, the likely response would be, “Mao, who?” Not too long ago they even threw his wife into jail. Some legacy!

Sizing Up Najib and Muhyiddin

Najib is an aristocrat, the son of a former prime minister. He comes from a modern nuclear family: father, mother and the five sons, Najib being the oldest. He had a privileged upbringing, including boarding school and university abroad. Najib and his brothers had plenty of parental love, what with their stay-at-home traditional mother. Even though the late Tun was a busy man, rest assured that with only five sons, he would remember and celebrate their birthdays.

Muhyiddin is one of over four dozen children of a village alim with multiple wives. It would be unlikely for his father to even remember Muhyiddin’s name, much less his birthday. In dynamics, young Muhyiddin had essentially a fatherless childhood. He attended the village school and later a small town high school, before proceeding to the local university.

The wives they have chosen too are very different. Najib’s current wife, his second, is the poster girl for extravagance and vulgarity, a Malaysian Imelda Marcos, except that Imelda had a weakness only for shoes. Muhyiddin’s wife is the typical kampong girl; she views her job as being to be by his side; to be seen but never heard.

It is easy to imagine Rosmah being actively engaged in her husband’s business. I cannot even contemplate Muhyiddin seriously engaging his wife in serious matters. He is the typical alpha kampong male; he knows what is best and his word rules.

Their seven-year age difference means that Muhyiddin could not possibly succeed Najib in the usual transition process. Muhyiddin is the older, so by the time Najib retires, Muhyiddin would be too old to take over. The only conceivable way for him to get the top slot would be if Najib’s tenure were to be prematurely cut short, by unexpected death or sordid scandals. Both are not remote possibilities. Najib’s father died in his early 50s from leukemia, and that malady remains lethal even today. As a timely reminder, many a Third World leader had succumbed to fatal “accidents.”

Scandals would be the more likely career killer for Najib. He certainly has some nasty ones hanging over him, from the brutal murder of the Mongolian model to his admitted conversations with Anwar Ibrahim’s alleged sodomy victim. Then there are the steady streams of squalid incompetence during his tenure as Defense Minister, from stolen jet engines to newly-acquired submarines that would not dive.

It does not escape everyone’s notice that far from defending Najib, Muhyiddin seems to relish his superior’s travails. Worse, he does not even bother to hide his delight.

In Malaysian politics, followers could sniff right away rivalries at the top. They would then quickly realign their positions and shift their loyalties in the hope of latching onto the winning team. The game would quickly degenerate into a sport of running down the opposing camps, with temporary alliances forged, broken, and then re-constituted to meet the quickly evolving dynamics. Thus expect even more ugly revelations from all sides.

This is already happening. Many are shocked at the utter corruption and rottenness of the party and its leaders. While such exposés would be bad for the party, they would be good for the country, especially considering that the next general election will only be a few years away.

Many would conclude that the inevitable collapse of UMNO under Najib to be the fulfillment of the RAHMAN prophecy, the “N” of the acronym representing Najib. I argue otherwise. There is no alignment of the stars that would preordain such an outcome. Rather what we have here reflects nothing more than Najib’s lack of leadership and the dearth of talent within UMNO. Had Mahathir chosen Najib instead of Abdullah as his (Mahathir’s) successor, Najib’s and thus UMNO’s political demise would have come sooner.

Were that to happen, my only regret would be to see the inglorious end to what was once an illustrious Malay institution – UMNO. Tun Razak was one of the key personalities in setting it up. It took only a generation to destroy what he had worked very hard to create and build. It would the supreme irony that it would be his son who would be responsible for destroying UMNO.

That would be quite a legacy.

WASHINGTON, April 12 (Bernama) -- Malaysian multi-ethnicity and cultural diversity have become an integral part of the society, said the prime minister's wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.

"This is our identity, our image, as well as, our strength which, in turn, provides a strong foundation for our country's political, social and economic success," she said at the Faces of 1Malaysia Festival, organised by the Information Communication and Culture Ministry at the National Geographic Society Building here Sunday.

The two-day festival of Malaysia's favourite food, multi-racial music and cultural performances, complemented by a handicraft demonstration and tourism promotion, ended Sunday.

Ambassador Esther Coppersmith represented the United States government at the function, dubbed "Symbol of friendship between two nations".

Touching on the inaugural showcase of Faces of 1Malaysia, Rosmah said that besides epitomising the diversities of Malaysia's rich cultural traditions that made Malaysia such a special country, the festival also manifested Malaysia-United States ties, goodwill adn friendship.

"It is also about affirming relationship between our two countries in many areas of mutual interest," she said.

"As the world becomes smaller and as we become more global, it is my fervent hope that there will be more sharing, not just in food and culture, but in many other areas that we interact reflecting our mutual appreciation of one another.

"And I sincerely hope that this warm rapport and friendship will be further enhanced through Faces of 1Malaysia," she said.

She also hoped that through the festival, the visitors would be abled to have a glimpse of Malaysia, and be able to promote Malaysia as a tourist destination.

The highlight of the festival was the installation of two "pokok beringin", one with the Malaysian flag painted on it and the other with an American flag, by Rosmah and Coppersmith, simbolising the goodwill between both countries.

The function, emceed by Datuk Mahadzir Lokman, started off with a short multimedia presentation on "Malaysia Truly Asia", followed by the Malay traditional welcoming dance, the "tarian selamat datang" and a 1Malaysia multiracial musical performance of joget "Johor Sport Club."

Malaysian pianist Tengku Ahmad Ifran Tengku Ahmad Syahrizal of Permata Seni Muzik performed the "Tanah Pusaka" while teenage singer Ikhwal, 17, captivated the audience with a rendition of "mentera semerah padi" .

The energetic "dikir bertingkah" performed by 10 children, aged 7 to 11, from the Tunas Budaya got the audience participating.

The festival, dubbed "Symbol of Friendship between Two Nations", is the first segment of the festival. The the second segment will be launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on Tuesday at the Oriental Ballroom of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel here.

Known as the 'Faces of 1Malaysia Gala Night', it will be attended by specially-invited guests, including United States (US) politicians.

Images of Gaza in Taiping at the funeral procession of the two brothers who were mercilessly killed by the Malaysian Police

You would have seen images of coffins being carried in the open over people’s head in a parade in scenes from Gaza, of Palestinians mercilessly killed by the Israelis. For the first time in the history of Malaysia, the coffins of the two brothers, Satchithananthan and Logeswaran, who were mercilessly killed by the Malaysian Police were taken in an open procession through the main streets of Taiping in defiance of Police orders. One could not help but think of the Gaza analogy. Only the coffins were not draped in Palestinian flags, they were just adorned by large flower garlands.
This merciless killing has shattered the family of the two brothers. The father was in deep grief, not to mention the rest of his family. Our deepest condolences go to the family in this terrible hour of their grief.
The funeral procession started from the house at around 2.00pm led by a small lorry bearing the funeral band and Hindraf/HRP activists. The lorry carried a large banner which read “ POLICE BUNUH MASYARAKAT INDIA” and “WE WANT A ROYAL COMMISSION OF INQUIRY INTO THE SHOOT TO KILL POLICY” . The lorry was followed by the two hearse vans and about two hundred friends and family members in cars and motorbikes. There were chants of “Polis Pembunuh” and “Police Kejam” right through the streets of Taiping.
The police attempted to stop the procession at four points on the way to the Police Station. But the crowd did not allow the Police to stop them , they just went on ahead. At the last point when the OCPD of Taiping completely blocked off the road leading to the Balai Police, the family decided to take the coffin out from the hearse vans and with pall bearers carried the coffins at the head of the procession through the road that the OCPD had blocked.
At two of the blocked roads on the way, Uthayakumar who was leading the Hindraf/HRP activists got into several serious arguments with the police officers and the OCPD. Here are some of the comments I picked up as he spoke in anger at the murderous attitude of the Malaysian police – “ The IGP of Malaysia is a Bodoh, for he cannot deal with live criminal suspects. He can only deal with them shot mercilessly dead. Where is the law that the police can shoot to kill. Which law in the country allows the police to murder and kill? The Police have no right to stop a funeral procession. What are the police afraid of?
The anger in the crowd was very evident as they did not heed the many police calls to stop or to divert to other roads. There were several Police light strike force members with guns and tear gas all ready to act against the crowd if they needed to. But none of this deterred the angry crowd. They just carried on and occasionally they burst out into loud chants of “Police Pembunuh” .
The Procession was blocked by the Police Light Strike Force unit from getting any closer to the Balai Polis. The members of the family and gathered friends and activists then decided to perform a Mritunjaya Mantram prayer before moving away with the coffins still on the shoulders for a while more before resuming their rest of the journey to the crematorium for the cremation in the hearse vans. The crowd kept chanting Polis Pembunuh all the way to the crematorium. Finally the remains of Satchithananthan and Logeswaran were cremated at about 4.00pm. May their souls rest in peace. Om Shanti.
When is this wanton killing going to stop. When is the Malaysian Police and their bosses the UMNO/BN government going to come to their senses. They cannot solve the problem of crime by killing off suspects. They already have too much blood on their hands. They must remember that things are never fixed and history has a way of reversing positions of its players. See what happened to Sadam Hussein, the once powerful ruler of Iraq. Finally he got an end worse than anything he meted out – a public hanging.
Nothing is fixed dear Home Minister Hishamuddin, and dear IGP Musa Hassan. Do not think you do not have accounting to do, just because you hold the reins of power now.

Teoh family, DAP wants Putrajaya to explain Dr Pornthip’s absence

By Debra Chong and Yow Hong Chieh - The Malaysian Insider

KUALA LUMPUR, April 11 — Dr Pornthip Rojanasunand’s reported pull-out from testifying in Teoh Beng Hock’s inquest next week due to political interference has raised fears among the Teoh family and the DAP that the case is being tampered with at the highest level.

The Selangor government has confirmed the Thai pathologist is not returning when the inquest resumes on April 20 but they want the coroner to agree to testimony via video-conferencing.

“Any effort to impede a fair hearing in the TBH case is an effort to cover up the truth and should be condemned,” Teoh’s younger sister, Lee Lan, said in a text message to The Malaysian Insider.

“The family wants Pornthip to come,” she added.

Several DAP lawmakers also told The Malaysian Insider today that they are worried about the repercussions on the inquest if Dr Pornthip does not show up to testify.

“If she cannot come we’ll be very disappointed,” said Selangor state executive councillor Ean Yong Hian Wah, who was also Teoh’s boss.

Dr Pornthip, 54, the director-general of Thailand’s Central Institute of Forensic Science, had reportedly pulled out from the ongoing case, claiming she was forced to do so because of “political pressure” from Putrajaya that could affect her work in southern Thailand.

The Malaysiakini news portal cited her saying her country’s government had received “signals” from the Malaysian government through “informal channels” telling her to voluntarily pull out from the inquest or face actions which could affect her work in southern Thailand

The flashy Thai pathologist could not be contacted yet to verify the reasons for not continuing her testimony into Teoh’s mysterious death last July 16.

She had said it was “80 per cent homicide”, contradicting Malaysian pathologists who say the political aide could have fallen to his death or suicide.

“The Malaysian government should come out with an official statement to confirm or deny it,” Ean Yong added.

Cheras MP Tan Kok Wai said pressure to stop Dr Pornthip’s from testifying would be disregarding justice.

“The Malaysian government should provide her all the necessary protection to facilitate her appearance at the inquest on the 20th,” said the DAP leader.

He said Dr Pornthip’s second autopsy report is expected to prove her initial theory that Teoh’s death was the result of homicide and not suicide as concluded by Malaysian pathologists.

“The government should offer an explanation. There’s ample time for the government to correct the wrongs,” Tan added.

Ean Yong’s colleague, Ronnie Liu said he believed Dr Pornthip is being harassed by the federal government into pulling out and challenged the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition to disprove the view.

“The Malaysian government should openly invite Pornthip to come to Malaysian court to testify for the case.

“It’s very important for Pornthip to testify because she has the knowledge and the experience and the guts to tell the truth,” the DAP assemblyman for Pandamaran said.

Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua echoed Liu’s view and called on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to step in and fulfil his personal promise to Teoh’s family to get to the bottom of the 30-year-old death.

“World-renowned pathologist Dr Pornthip’s evidence and statements are critical to ensure that justice will be served.

“Any attempts which result in her failure to testify will be a mockery of justice in this country. I hope that the Prime Minister will give his total commitment to ensure the safety and freedom of Dr Pornthip for her... to testify in such an important trial,” Pua said.

Seputeh MP Teresa Kok told The Malaysian Insider she was inclined to believe Dr Pornthip’s claims over de facto Law Minister, Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz.

Nazri was reported today to have called Dr Pornthip a “liar” for claiming the federal government had exerted “political pressure” on the Thai government to force her out of Teoh’s inquest.

Kok scoffed at Nazri’s rebuttal, noting that the minister in the Prime Minister’s Department did not always know what his department officials were doing.

“If the the statement is true, it is very stupid for the Malaysian government to do this during election time,” Kok said.

She reasoned that the federal government did this because it did not want the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to look bad.

“By not allowing Pornthip to come, it just casts more doubts in the mind of the public,” she said, referring to the anti-graft body’s public image which had taken a beating following Teoh’s death.

Kok urged the Thai forensic expert to return to the witness stand and testify. She boasted: “Pakatan Rakyat has enough members who will come forward to guarantee her safety.”

DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang, challenged Nazri to make a ministerial statement on Dr Pornthip’s claims in Parliament tomorrow and request the Dewan Rakyat Speaker to allow full debate on the subject.

“With Pornthip barred from the Teoh Beng Hock inquest, public confidence in the Barisan Nasional government and MACC would plunge to a new all-time low as the overwhelming majority of Malaysians do not believe that Teoh Beng Hock committed suicide by jumping off the 14th floor of the MACC headquarters in Shah Alam on July 16 last year,” the DAP Parliamentary Opposition Leader said in his website today.

Lim’s call was echoed by his partyman Gobind Singh Deo who issued yet another challenge to Nazri.

“I challenge Nazri to offer himself as a witness at the inquest to prove his allegation that Dr Porntip had lied in court,” said the lawyer representing Teoh’s family in the ongoing inquest, criticised Nazri for failing to investigate Dr Pornthip’s claims first before labelling her a “liar”.

“Instead of assisting the Teoh family and trying to solve the problem, Nazri Aziz has spoken volumes for the government to the contrary,” he slammed.

“Is there a real desire on part of the government to see justice done for Teoh Beng Hock or do they hope to discredit those who have helped establish a case against suicide on his behalf as seems to be the case here?” quizzed Gobind who pointed out that Nazri’s statement reflected his ignorance and arrogance and was “contemptuous” of the court process.

Gobind noted that Dr Pornthip’s first testimony — highlighting pressure marks around Teoh’s neck suggesting he was possibly strangled — had borne out in the second autopsy ordered by the coroner, Azmil Muntapha Abbas.

“It further went to show that the theory advanced by the MACC, that Teoh was not harmed whilst on the 14th floor of Plaza Masalam may well be open to question,” he added.

Gobind ticked off Nazri for trying to interfere with the court process and told him to leave it to the coroner to decide based on the evidence.

Dr Pornthip had first testified in court here that Teoh’s death was “80 per cent homicide”, contradicting Malaysian pathologists who say the political aide could have fallen to his death or suicide.

Her second testimony will be crucial to the inquest, and to prove allegations that there was foul play in Teoh’s death.

Teoh, 30, had been questioned by anti-graft officers investigating claims his boss had misused state funds. He was found dead on July 16 last year, nine floors above the Selangor MACC’s office in Shah Alam.

KUALA LUMPUR, April 11 — Malay rights group Perkasa has demanded the Najib administration places its new inter-faith panel under the national Islamic Affairs Department, saying it rejected the entity in its current form.

Perkasa has earlier made demands on the government’s New Economic Model (NEM) but Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak insists the group is “not so extreme”.

“We are suspicious of it, we reject the committee because this is religion we are talking about,” Perkasa president Datuk Ibrahim Ali told reporters after chairing the group’s meeting here.

The Independent Pasir Mas MP formed Perkasa two years ago, attracting Umno members who feel the Malay party is straying from its struggles of protecting and defending Malay rights and Islam.

Ibrahim said his group will tolerate the committee if it falls under the guidance of Datuk Jamil Khir Baharom, the Islamic Affairs Minister under the Prime Minister’s Department and not Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon, who is currently the minister in charge.

“Because it has to do with religion, it should fall under the jurisdiction of Jakim or guided by Jamil and not Koh Tsu Koon,” stressed the Kelantanese leader, referring to the Islamic Affairs Department.

Although the committee has no legal standing, Ibrahim contended that it will be powerful enough to influence the Cabinet.

He accused the committee of not having “strong Islamic credentials” and pointed out that input from other religions may threaten the sanctity of Islam.

His complaint was directed at panel chief Datuk Ilani Isahak, a renowned moderate Islamic scholar and former Kota Bharu MP whom Ibrahim said was not “a good choice” to head the body.

“So can you imagine what would happen to our akidah (faith), it will derail it. This is not something that you play around with, this is very sensitive to the Muslims,” he lamented.

The inter-faith committee had been mooted in the past before but was rejected by Jakim which argued that Islam is the country’s official religion and should not be placed on the same par as others.

Ibrahim reinforced Jakim’s argument today, saying it’s a “second subliminal attempt” to threaten Islam.

“Islam is a wahyu (God-sent) religion while others are based on logic of the mind,” he said.

His other contentious issue with the committee was that it has no approval from the Conference of Rulers, the country’s supreme Islamic authority.

The Perkasa president said he will lobby Najib to review the committee set-up and propose that the current committee be changed to an inter-racial committee and drop religion from its scope.

Perkasa will also send a memorandum of protest to the Conference of Rulers soon.

Foreign born children of Malaysian women eligible for citizenship

KUALA LUMPUR, April 11 — The Home Ministry has formulated a mechanism to enable children born overseas to Malaysian women married to foreigners will be eligible for citizenship, said its minister, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein.

He said for the time being there was no provision in the Federal Constitution for the children to be automatically accorded with Malaysian citizenship.

Currently, only children born overseas to foreign women married to Malaysian men are conferred Malaysian citizenship, he said in a statement today.

He said in an effort to resolve gender discrimination over the issue, the ministry had approved a new rule without the need to amend existing law.

“Among the conditions, both parents must make joint applications by completing the forms provided.

“This is to avoid disputes between parents and dual citizenship of the children as well as to protect the image of the country,” he said, adding that both parents must appear before a consular officer at the office of foreign missions.

Hishammuddin said the application must be made within one year from the birth of the children.

He said after the applications were approved, they must apply in person to the National Registration Department for citizenship certificates and MyKid for the children. — Bernama

Ku Li explains role in oil royalty issue

KOTA BARU: Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah said today he had agreed to be a mediator to help monitor the distribution of oil royalty in Kelantan and not negotiate to resolve any dispute in the matter.
The former Petronas chairman said that if the federal government agreed to provide the royalty, he wanted to ensure that the money was not misused by the state government.

"My offer to be a mediator may have been misinterpreted. I had only offered to help monitor to ensure that the oil royalty given as cash payment is not misused, provided the federal government agreed to it.

"However, as the money is not being given as cash payment or royalty, and as it is to be given as compassionate fund, the matter does not arise any more," he told reporters here.

Earlier, Tengku Razaleigh had attended the opening of the 13th general meeting of the Kelantan Mosque Officers and Staff Association by the Tengku Bendahara of Kelantan, Tengku Mohamad Faiz Tengku Ismail Petra, who is also the President of the Kelantan Islamic Affairs and Malay Customs Council (MAIK), here.

Kelantan Financial Planning, Economy and Welfare Committee chairman Husam Musa had announced that the state executive council had approved the appointment of Tengku Razaleigh as the state government's representative in discussions on the oil royalty with the federal government.

Tengku Razaleigh criticised those who often misinterpreted the matter, saying these were politicians who thought of nothing else but politics.

Asked whether he had received any letter from the state government appointing him as its consultant on the oil royalty issue, he said he had not.

Not in support of state government
Tengku Razaleigh said he did not support the state government in its claim for the oil royalty but only provided an explanation of the legal right of the state government as he was the one who had drafted the law governing petroleum royalty.

"I will not support. I only spoke in terms of the law. If oil is found offshore Kelantan, the state is eligible for five per cent (of the oil revenue).

"The law has not been amended since. I drafted the law. That was the requirement of the law. It was also what (second prime minister) (Abdul) Razak (Hussein) had wanted done," he said.

Asked whether it was right for the Kelantan government to continue to demand oil royalty when the federal government was providing the compassionate fund, Tengku Razaleigh said that was up to the state government because he had nothing to do with the matter.

He said he would also reject any offer to be the state government representative on the committee distributing the compassionate fund set up by the federal government because he had a lot of other matters to attend to.
