FMT ALERT KUALA LUMPUR: MIC information chief P Kamalanathan is being touted as a compromise choice as BN candidate for the Hulu Selangor, as Umno and MIC continue to negotiate with barely hours to go before the BN makes public its choice.

It is learnt that MIC president S Samy Vellu held a last-minute discussion with Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to convince the latter to field MIC number two G Palanivel, who has held the seat for four terms before his narrow loss in 2008 to his PKR challenger.

Sources claimed that the two parties have reached a compromise by naming MIC information chief P Kamalanathan as the candidate.

Selangor Umno had preferred to field Hulu Selangor MIC Youth leader V Mugilan, but the MIC is now reportedly considering taking disciplinary action against him.

Come clean, Zaid challenges ministers

KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and his Cabinet colleagues were challenged today to make a full public disclosure of their assets and that of their families, their children and their nominees.
Making the challenge was Zaid Ibrahim, the PKR candidate in the Hulu Selangor by-election, in response to Muhyiddin's statement that Zaid had been chosen to stand because of his "deep pockets".Zaid said in a posting on his blog today that Muhyiddin's comment was typical of Umno's dirty campaign of "spreading lies and misinformation" and not focussing on issues to do with the people.
"I was never wealthy, unlike other Umno ministers," Zaid said. "I was a minister for only six months. Before that I was never a crony of any one, nor obtained any concessions or APs or even blocks of shares."
Zaid said he was prepared to publicly disclose his possessions "and my so called wealth" and that of his family and children as well -- on condition that Muhyiddin and Cabinet ministers also declare their own possessions, and that of their families, children and nominees.
Zaid referred to his time as de facto law minister in the government of Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and pointed out that Cabinet ministers had resisted a move by Abdullah and he that ministers should declare their assets to show that BN ministers were clean and not afraid of full accountability and transparency.
"Many senior ministers opposed this idea," Zaid said. "They opposed everything good that Pak Lah wanted to do. I wonder what the DPM has to say about this now."
He also pointed out that when he was appointed a minister he had requested a full investigation in his affairs by the Anti-Corruption Agency. "To this day they have not come forth with any outcome," he said.
Zaid also took issue with Muhyiddin's references to Zaid's disciplinary problems in Umno, when he was accused of money politics and suspended for three years.
He said he had been framed and that the disciplinary board had relied on false statutory declarations. "I won the seat uncontested. There was no opponent. So, how could I be charged for money politics, when there is no contest? But within Umno, I guess anything is possible."
He said the Umno disciplinary board that found him guilty of money politics was willing to spare him on the condition that he apologise to the board for questioning their process and authority.
"Under no circumstances was I ever going to apologize to the board," Zaid said, as to do so would be to implicitly admit guilt.
He accused Muhyiddin of "stooping so low" in his comments and avoiding the issues Zaid have raised on behalf of the people in Hulu Selangor, and urged the Barisan Nasional to conduct a fair fight for the support of voters.
The Hulu Selangor by-election will be held on April 25. Zaid's opponent from BN will be named later today; Muhyiddin had previously stated that the BN candidate would be from the MIC and a local-born.
The MIC has been torn by internal divisions on the candidacy. One of those in the running is MIC deputy president G Palanivel who held the seat for four terms before narrowly losing to PKR's Zainal Abidin Ahmad. He died of brain cancer last month.

Anwar: BN afraid to face Zaid

KUALA LUMPUR: PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim said he was proud to nominate PKR central committee member Zaid Ibrahim as candidate for the Hulu Selangor by-election.
He described Zaid as a principled man who had quit his post as law minister because he was against the Internal Security Act.
“I'm proud to nominate Zaid as a candidate because he is a true warrior, who despite all the unfounded allegations levelled at him, soldiers on,”said Anwar.
“Pakatan believes Zaid can bring about vital and necessary changes to Hulu Selangor if given the mandate by the voters for the parliamentary seat.”
He was talking to reporters late yesterday in Parliament.
Anwar said BN was delibrately provoking Zaid by linking him to past actions and events which he had nothing to do with.
"BN is afraid to face Zaid is trying to influence voters and win sympathy for it, but voters are a discerning lot and are losing faith the BN.
“It does not matter who BN nominates, Pakatan is game for a battle in Hulu Selangor and prevail," he added.
Anwar said Pakatan’s win in past by-elections were indications that the voters were ready to give their undivided support to Pakatan one again.
DAP candidate for Sibu
Meanwhile, Anwar put an end to speculations on the Sibu by-election when he confirmed that Pakatan will field a DAP candidate.
“We felt a DAP candidate would be the most suitable choice to represent Pakatan in the battle to wrest the seat from BN," he said.
The seat held by former deputy transport minister Robert Lau, a four-term MP, fell vacant last Friday when he passed away after a long illness.
BN through its coalition partner, Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) has been holding the seat since 1990.
On Tuesday Sarawak DAP chairman Wong Ho Leng said the party had identified eight potential candidates for the by-election.
Among them were a sole women candidate Alice Lau, former SUPP member Wong Ching Yong, David Wong, Stephen Lu, new faces Oscar Ling, Lau Hui Ung and Yap Hai Loi and Ho Leng himself.
“We have gone to the state constituencies over the last nine months. We have been on the ground working in Pelawan, Bawang Assan and Nangka,” he said.
Pelawan, Bawang Assan and Nangka are three state constituencies under the Sibu parliamentary boundaries.
In the 2006 Sarawak elections, Sibu posed a three-cornered fight between DAP, PKR and BN. DAP and PKR collectively lost to Lau on a 3,232 vote difference.
The EC is to meet on April 16 to decide on the nomination and by-election dates.

GEORGE TOWN: Residents of Kampung Melayu Tanjung Tokong have asked the Najib administration to intervene to save their village from extinction.

Mohamad Salleh Yahaya, chairman of the Tanjung Tokong Villagers Association, said the government should seize this opportunity to prove that its “People First, Performance Now” slogan is more than empty rhetoric.
He said the residents hoped to maintain the area as a heritage village and depended on Putrajaya’s “swift and decisive intervention” to help them realise their aspiration.
Historians say Kampung Melayu Tanjung Tokong is the oldest Malay fishing village in Penang, and several civic groups have accused the Urban Development Authority (UDA) of wanting to wipe it off the map and to build in its place modern residential and commercial complexes.
“It’s all about money,” Mohamad Salleh told FMT. “UDA’s only focus is to achieve its corporate goals, not to restructure, redevelop and upgrade the place as an urban village enclave in George Town.”
He called on Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak to lend a sympathetic ear to the villagers.
“Otherwise,” he said, “it will confirm the widespread belief that his 1Malaysia project and the slogan associated with it -- People First, Performance Now -- were just vote-fishing tricks.
Kampung Melayu Tanjung Tokong occupies 24 acres of land on which stand 300 houses, 30 of them built illegally.
Residents fear that the village will end up like Kampung Buah Pala, the Indian enclave in Penang that was demolished last year.
'We have lost our rights'
It was Najib’s late father, Abdul Razak Hussein, who as prime minister launched the scheme to restructure, redevelop and upgrade the village under UDA in 1972.
The idea was to create a Malay settlement in George Town. However, UDA subsequently decided to relocate some of the villagers. In 2008, it declared the remaining villagers as squatters.
“We have lost our rights even though we are the descendants of the original natives of Penang because of UDA's statutory declaration,” said Mohamad Salleh.
Last year, the Kampung Melayu Villagers Association, which has about 500 members, collected some 3,000 signatures nationwide and submitted memorandums to the Federal and Penang governments seeking their intervention to save the village.
But both governments have been lukewarm, said Mohamad Salleh.
"The federal government must declare the village a Malay heritage for us to retain any of our legitimate rights over our traditional land," he said.

Independents aim to break Malay and Indian vote bank

KUALA KUBU BARU: Going by the number of nominations forms purchased, the Hulu Selangor by-election is likely to have more than two candidates contesting on April 25.
Thus far FMT has seen four prospective candidates wishing to contest as independents and possibly break the Malay and Indian vote bank.
There are 64,500 registered voters in the Hulu Selangor constituency, with the Malay community just over half the number, and Indian community a significant one-fifth.
The four likely candidates are former MIC Hulu Selangor deputy division chairman V Chandran, MIC Bukit Bintang chairman T Ananthan (photo), former People Progressive Party member J Anuratha and former Penang PKR women chief Aminah Abdullah .
Chandran, who handed in his nomination forms yesterday together with the RM5,000 deposit, said he did not feel threatened by Umno or MIC's presence and was confident of winning.
“I have lived in Hulu Selangor for 54 years. I know every inch of Hulu Selangor. I also know what has been happening and what MIC has not done,” he said.
Chandran, who was sacked from the party last year, said MIC deputy president G Palanivel’s four terms as Hulu Selangor parliamentarian had brought little change.
“He (Palanivel) was here from 1990 to 2008. He did not do enough. There are more poor people here now. He and Samy Vellu (MIC president) are liars.
“Umno is right to ask for a different candidate. If BN fields Palanivel they will lose badly,” he said alluding to the on-going backroom tussle between Umno’s choice of local boy V Mugilan (Hulu Selangor MIC youth chief) and MIC deputy president G Palanivel.
The outcome of the tussle will only be known today when BN announces its candidate.
'PKR win assured'
Ananthan on the other hand is out to prove a point.
“I know I won’t win but my main objective is to get 1,500-3,000 of the Indian votes.
“If I get away with more than 1,500 votes, it is a clear indication that to the country that the Indian community is no longer dependent on MIC to voice its needs,” said the former Bernama journalist.
Ananthan also criticised MIC Central Working Committee members for failing to stand up to Samy Vellu.
“The party has lost the respect of BN coalition partners. This is a bigger problem because MIC will soon become irrelevant to Umno,” he said.
When asked to comment on the BN’s likely candidate, he said: “Whoever BN picks will definitely be defeated by PKR’s Zaid Ibrahim."
The other two independents seeking to be elected on April 25 are Anuratha, 40, and Aminah , 57.
Aminah, who contested in the Penanti by-election in May last year and lost her deposit, is seeking to redeem herself in Hulu Selangor, while Anuratha, a graduate in business studies, is hoping to win by riding on her father’s popularity as a philanthropist.

Dissatisfied factions talking of sabotaging chosen candidates

(The Star) PETALING JAYA: Less than 48 hours before the nominations, both Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Rakyat are finding it hard to convince the majority of their members and supporters about the suitability of their candidates for the Hulu Selangor by-election.

Internal dissatisfaction over the issue is causing friction in both camps.

Dissatisfied factions in the Barisan and the Pakatan are already talking about taking extreme measures to sabotage their coalition’s chosen candidates.

The Barisan will name its candidate today and chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Razak has already confirmed that it would be from the MIC.

However, there were already many disgruntled voices within the party following reports that its deputy president Datuk G. Palanivel, the only name proposed by party president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu, might not be fielded.

Some MIC leaders have threatened to close the operation centre if the Barisan leadership rejected Palanivel.

A leader who declined to be named had suggested that if the Barisan could not respect the party’s choice, then it should “hand” the seat back to Umno which had initially wanted it.

“Our dignity is on the line,” he said. Another went a step further by suggesting that the party should consider leaving the coalition altogether.

It is no secret that some local leaders are against the Barisan fielding Palanivel who was Hulu Selangor MP for four terms prior to losing the seat to the PKR in the 2008 general election.

Other candidates shortlisted by the Barisan are MIC Youth deputy chief V. Mugilan and MIC information chief P. Kamalanathan.

In the Pakatan, the decision to field Datuk Zaid Ibrahim also did not go down well with certain groups within the PKR and PAS.

The choice of Zaid, who is not from Selangor, has left many state PKR leaders fuming.

In fact, during the ceremony to name Zaid as the candidate, conspicuously missing was the party’s strongman from Selangor, vice-president Azmin Ali.

It is understood that a few were already talking about fielding a local Malay candidate to sabotage Zaid.

Another group that is unhappy having Zaid as a candidate said they plan to “slow down”.

“We want the Pakatan to lose to teach the leadership a lesson for ignoring others in the decision-making process,’’ said a disgruntled MP.

The PKR and PAS Youth machinery that had been active weeks before Zaid was announced as the candidate on Tuesday night also halted momentarily as members were taken aback by the leadership’s choice.

PKR Youth chief Shamsul Iskandar Md Akin, one of the 12 candidates shortlisted by the party, admitted that members were taken aback because they were expecting a younger person.

“But I am confident the Youth machinery will be back in full gear soon enough,” he said.

As the shootout for Hulu Selangor draws near, the dirty campaign of UMNO has begun in full swing. Predictably, UMNO are not focusing on the issues of the rakyat. UMNO are focused on the only thing they know, and that is: to spread lies and misinformation.

According to The Deputy Prime Minister and his hired hands, one of the issues plaguing my candidacy is my disciplinary record, specifically of being suspended by UMNO for money politics. As a result of that, they conveniently use this to accuse me of everything under the sun: corrupt, greedy, wealthy, etc.
As always, the truth will set you free. It is perhaps something UMNO is unfamiliar with. Time and time again, they continue to underestimate the intelligence of the rakyat and try to confuse them with fiction, but the rakyat knows better.

I have defended myself from these accusations many times, but will do so again.

So here it is…

In 2001, I won the contest for the post of UMNO Division Chief for Kota Bharu. Took me three attempts and 10 years to do that but I did it.

That position left them with no choice but to field me as a candidate for March 2004 General Election. I won a hard fought contest for the Kota Bharu Parliamentary seat, although the 3 State Assembly seats in that parliamentary constituency was won by PAS. (Somewhat similar to the present situation in Hulu Selangor where the 3 State seats were won by BN in 2008, and now I am trying to win it again for PKR). I expected a more supportive reaction from UMNO considering the significance of the victory — it was the first time after 15 years of PAS rule, that BN at last won the Kota Bharu seat.

But it was not to be. They were ready to knife me again. By June 2004, there was again another contest for the UMNO Kota Bharu Division. Fortunately, I was able to retain the seat as Division Chief, uncontested.
But other positions in the party were up for grabs. During that contest , certain individuals issued complaints by way of signing false statutory declarations that I had given money to “my agent”, the late Datuk Zahari Wahab in exchange for votes, purportedly on my behalf.

On the 16th of October 2004, I was charged for money politics. I found this charge to be utterly ridiculous, because I won the seat uncontested. There was no opponent. So, how could I be charged for money politics, when there is no contest? But within UMNO, I guess anything is possible.

For the charges to have any merit, there must be a witness to support the charge of money politics. If accusations against my friend Zahari Wahab of giving money for votes had any merit, how were they certain it wasn’t for Zahari’s own campaign? At the time, Zahari himself was contesting for the Vice President of the Division. Even if it was true that Zahari had indulged in money politics, he might have done it for himself as he was the one contesting. By the time the 1st hearing came up before the UMNO Disciplinary board, Zahari Wahab had unfortunately passed away. Incidentally he too, was charged with money politics which I believe was also false.. But with his demise, the UMNO Disciplinary Board could not put forth Zahari to support their claims. They did not put forth any other witness to support these accusations, other than the false statutory declarations which I had no opportunity to challenge the maker of these statements. I described the proceedings as a sham and that upset them. They were determined to pass this judgment on me without any basis whatsoever.

It was clear that I was being framed. I challenged and questioned the system of how the Board arrived at their decision without any supporting proof or evidence.

In the end, the UMNO Disciplinary Board ruled that I was guilty of money politics. But, they were indeed willing to spare me any punishment, on the condition that I apologize to the UMNO disciplinary board for questioning their process and authority.

Under no circumstances was I ever going to apologize to the board. Any apology for my alleged actions to the board would implicitly be admitting my guilt, and I was not going to compromise on the principle of the matter and my innocence. When I refused to apologize, that was when the UMNO board suspended me for 3 years.

In 2008, when I was made a Minister, I did not wish for there to be any doubt as to my character and credibility as I undertook this important responsibility in what I consider to be a reformist Government. I wanted to clear my name of any suspicion of those charges. So, I requested the then Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA) to investigate me further, to clear my name once and for all. Till today, they have not come forth with any outcome. If I was really as guilty as so they claim, why did they make me a Minister? Because the truth is, I did not do anything as claimed by my opponents in UMNO; that is why I was made a Minister.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin suggested today that I was picked as the candidate for Hulu Selangor supposedly because of my deep pockets. My lovely wife and daughter, Alysha are very excited now; they asked me where did I hide my wealth and they insist that I take them out shopping. Now, I’m in trouble!

I suggest it is best for the DPM to hold his tongue. It is certainly not befitting of a DPM to stoop so low and make such claims. If he were to make such claims, then he must stand by those statements..

In the interest of transparency, I would be prepared to disclose to the public my possessions and my so called ‘wealth’; and that of my family and my children as well, on the condition that the DPM and his colleagues in Cabinet are willing to do the same of their own possessions, of their families, of their children, and their nominees.

During my brief tenure as Minister, (Tun) Pak Lah and I suggested that Cabinet Ministers should declare their assets. To show that BN Ministers are clean and not afraid of full accountability and transparency in their dealings . Many senior ministers opposed this idea. They opposed everything good that Pak Lah wanted to do. I wonder what the DPM has to say about this now.

If he hasn’t got anything useful to add, I suggest to the DPM that we move on and address the issues I have raised for the people in Hulu Selangor. And the issues facing the country. Lets have a fair fight and see who has the support of the people!

Hindraf, Darwin, Newton, Einstein and Democracy

If the Indians demand urgent attention for their plight, the Malays can also say their plight is not completely addressed yet and the Chinese will say they have been footing the bill for too long besides having Chinese poor as well whose desperation is no different from the desperation of the poor Malays or the poor Indians. Racial arguments will never end.

No, this is not an opinion piece about natural selection or even survival of the fittest. However, to survive comfortably in Malaysia one has to play politics with good judgment and wisdom.

Human thought is ideal and recognizes few limits but is unnatural. Nature is practicality itself and works only within certain boundaries. For example, all structures constructed by humans work only within limits of load and stress as well as time. Outside these limits, these structures fail or collapse often with disastrous consequences.

Newtonian physics is a great result of human thought, but Newtonian physics (the very laws of physics itself) work only with big bodies. When it comes to the atomic scale, Einstein rules the roost. Newton does not work 100% anymore. But even Einstein fails when it comes to sub-atomic physics and quantum mechanics is king. Inside a black hole, nobody is sure whether any laws of physics work at all.

So it is with human thought – it is idealized and great, but unfortunately it works only within certain limits. Human ego unfortunately knows no limits and goes in stark conflict with nature (as well as with other humans) at most times. This is why the Christians say that pride is the greatest sin – the mother of all sin. I respect this sentiment and faith.

Democracy is a human construct. It works only within certain limits. One of these is sportsmanship and integrity. The other is recognition and acceptance of the balance of power.

In the west, democracy is viable because there are always 2 great opposing powers that keep each other in check. No power dominates for long. Even in ancient Greek democracy. Powerful families checked each other’s power, but democracy is pushed aside during times of war when a dictator is elected or when a powerful man becomes too powerful and elects himself dictator.

In England democracy started as a check on the king’s power by the feudal lords when they forced him to sign the Magna Carta. It continued to develop and the merchant class and nascent bourgeoisie forced the king to set up Parliament as a check on his power to impose taxes on them.

It further developed when the working class grew powerful enough (often with the excuse of offering loyalty in desperate times of war) to challenge the authority of the ruling capitalists and Parliament gradually split into Whigs and Tories and then into Labour and Conservatives.

In the US, the 2 great opposing forces used to be between those who favoured concentration of power (big government) and those who wanted to retain the independence of the states (they fought a vicious civil war on these sentiments alone).

These days the 2 opposing forces can be anything – from placing faith in the productivity and creativity of talented individuals against placing faith in the productivity of the whole people as the basis of the economic welfare of the nation on the one hand to racial / tribal politics where 2 major races or tribes face off against each other on the opposite extreme.

This is where sportsmanship comes in. If human ego is too great and knows no limits, one side has no respect for the other and the dominant side usually uses dirty tricks and all sorts of abuses of power to force submission on the other side. If there is respect and sportsmanship, each is given the chance to rule when one side’s economic and social policies has reached the limits of its validity and applicability.

In a situation where trust is placed upon different sets of people (regardless of race, gender or religion) to apply their economic and social policies to government, there is a greater chance for respect and sportsmanship to flourish. Unfortunately, in racial or tribal politics, there is very little chance of sportsmanship being practiced because of sensitivities and jealousies of race. This is why racial or tribal politics characterize poor, uncivilized and undeveloped nations while the more advanced rich nations practise balance of power based on economic and social policies.

In Hindraf’s case, there is no doubt about its bravery and courage to kick-start the development of Malaysia’s democracy on a better footing. However, obsession in pushing racial politics is a backward step.

For over 50 years, the Malaysian Indians and Chinese voted for the BN. For over 50 years they were marginalized and discriminated against. The Indians especially became so isolated they were placed in desperate straits. So the explosion came. But the explosion was an expression of disgust and sense of betrayal against the BN which they have placed so much faith in. It was an explosion of a slave against a master.

Now that the master has been shocked into some sense of compromise (1Malaysia is a symptom of this atmosphere of tricky compromise), Hindraf senses an opportunity to gain mileage and uses age old racial politics to push this advantage.

Unfortunately racial politics can only push Malaysia backwards, besides being an opportunistic appeal to the master to change his discriminatory ways. It is not a way forward, because if the Indians demand urgent attention for their plight, the Malays can also say their plight is not completely addressed yet and the Chinese will say they have been footing the bill for too long besides having Chinese poor as well whose desperation is no different from the desperation of the poor Malays or the poor Indians. Racial arguments will never end.

Besides, Hindraf’s tactics seem to be an appeal to the master to change his ways, not to change masters. This probably stems from the realization that the Indians are after all a minority and no way can they form one part of the balance of power on their own. It is also a dangerous tactic because if it fails, the only logical path left is the path of violence and terrorism. This Hindraf, true to its Gandhian roots, say is a path they will never follow (provided Hindraf can keep spin-off tendencies in check). So the only path is to succeed in wringing compromises from the old racist master in a non-violent way or fail miserably. There is no other alternative. If it fails miserably, the spin-off tendencies grow in strength and Hindraf would have contributed indirectly to an even more dangerous Malaysia as a place to live in.

However if the democratic principles are to be trusted, there is an alternative path for Hindraf – that is to recognize the balance of power and join with the opposition. After all, the strength of the Indians can be better expressed in the opposition where they can form a bigger percentage (10% of half Malaysia) compared to appealing to UMNO (where they form only 5% of the whole of UMNO dominated Malaysia). The Indians can play politics with judgment and wisdom by changing masters – from a master who discriminated against you for over 50 years and whose rule means you only form 5% of the pressure group in UMNO dominated Malaysia or to cast your lot with a more sympathetic new master where you form a pressure group of 10% of the coalition in a healthy 2 party system.

Of course this tactic logically allows you to cast your lot with UMNO where you also form 10% of the BN, but this assumes that there is a healthy 2 party system in place and not UMNO domination as per past 50 years. Besides, there is still the old dowager MIC to contend with in the BN and you need to kick out this old dowager before you can safely continue to vote for BN for the next 50 years.
However if you are true to your Gandhian roots as you say you are, you will be fighting to change masters in a non-violent way, not appeal to the old one to change his ways. It does not take an Einstein to figure out what to do. heeheehee

Stop shooting own foot, Khairy tells BN factions

(Bernama) - The groups within the Barisan Nasional (BN) who threaten to leave the party if they were not chosen as candidates have been asked to stop making such threats immediately to protect party harmony.

Umno Youth head Khairy Jamaluddin said such threats could be described as targeting not only Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak as BN chairman, but also to the party as a whole.

“I feel uncomfortable when there are threats made against the BN, when there are threats saying that if a particular candidate is not chosen then the party will leave the coalition, the party will boycott, the party will close its operations room,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby, here today.

Khairy, who is also the BN Youth chairman, said everyone should wait for the announcement on the BN candidate for the Hulu Selangor seat during the parliamentary by-election on April 25, to be made by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin tomorrow.

“I’m confident that whoever is chosen, what is certain is that he (the candidate) is from the MIC,” he said.

He hoped the rumour that there were divisions that would shut down their operations rooms and boycott the by-election would not be repeated in future.

“It’s just that the feedback that I receive as BN Youth chairman is that the voters there want a local-born and a young candidate. Previously I said a candidate who is friendly to the young generation, more accurately, they want a young candidate, and I hope that a young candidate will be fielded there,” he said.

Asked about the possibility of a negative impact if the candidate fielded did not meet the aspiration of the voters and BN Youth movement, Khairy said it was important for the BN members to support whoever was fielded by the BN as its candidate in Hulu Selangor.

“What is important is that we maintain the BN solidarity and comradeship,” he said.

Muhyiddin’s gaffes

CAN someone please send Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin for image consulting? Or for some prepping on the art of answering reporters' questions? Maybe the deputy prime minister ought to have a daily practice session with aides who should throw him trick questions on race and religion. He should learn to either deflect difficult questions skilfully, like former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, or not answer them at all.
For all the millions the Malaysian government is paying Apco Worldwide to pretty its image, personal coaching for key members of the federal administration doesn't appear to be in the consultancy package. A pity, because after all those public funds spent, the toil of Apco's hard work is lost on those who are waiting to be impressed the most: the citizens.
Unless Muhyiddin and his boss, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, are really playing "good cop, bad cop" — one each to placate Malay and non-Malay Malaysians — what should we make of Muhyiddin's gaffes?
Foot in mouth
Muhyiddin has always been a blunt straight-talker. I am not senior enough to have had the experience of covering him when he was Johor menteri besar, but I do recall that his press conferences while he was agriculture and agro-based industries minister (2004-2008) were as dry as deadwood and straight to the point.
Muhyiddin tackles questions so narrowly that I'm guessing he doesn't think about how his answers are perceived by a larger audience. Of course, the consequences are different when talking about agricultural subsidies and padi output, than when responding to a dare to state whether one is Malay or Malaysian first.

Lim And so, into wily Lim Kit Siang's trap the deputy premier fell, and provided the opposition just the soundbite it needed to go to town with: "I am a Malay first." And Muhyiddin's reason for not prioritising being Malaysian? "All the Malay [Malaysians] will shun me and say you're not proper."
May I suggest what Muhyiddin could have said? If he really could not bring himself to say he is Malaysian first, he could have said any of the following:
 a)    "My race is Malay, but I am a Malaysian."
 b)     "All citizens are Malaysians, although we are of different races."
 c)     "I will not entertain Kit Siang's challenge. There is no need for me to respond directly just to show I support the 1Malaysia concept. The proof will be in the government's policies and actions."
Any of the above would have sounded more nuanced than a flat-out declaration of his racial identification. While the above responses would unlikely score Muhyiddin extra points with Malay Malaysian ultras, it is unlikely they could have earned him the demerit points he seems to have secured from other Malaysians.
Muhyiddin seems prone to verbal blunders when he's on the defensive; "I am a Malay first" being a case in point. In an earlier incident, he was trying to defend the indefensible — the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate, disbarred lawyer Rohaizat Othman, in the August 2009 Permatang Pasir by-election. Muhyiddin likened the Bar Council's fines slapped on Rohaizat to parking tickets.
Assets and liabilities
In comparing disciplinary action by the Bar Council to parking tickets, Muhyiddin betrayed either arrogance, or a lack of respect for professional ethics, or a lackadaisical attitude towards traffic offences.
In that cornered situation, Muhyiddin should have simply acknowledged that the Bar Council, as a professional body, had the right to act against its members. Instead, he accused the Bar of an anti-BN agenda. Muhyiddin may be thinking of the adage "the best defence is a good offence", but unless he can master it, he only comes out looking desperate.
Muhyiddin's forthright, no-nonsense style of talking, a possibly good trait under other circumstances, will become a liability if he doesn't pause to ponder his responses before speaking.
As it is, Muhyiddin's image seems to be getting more damaged by the day. And this is a pity, because he has strength of experience, knowledge, and leadership on his side. Yet, he's chosen to show his stripes as a Malay-Muslim supremacist first and foremost, when, as second-in-charge of the country, he should be a leader for all citizens.
Unlikely Apco can do anything about this, though. This is public relations advice that politicians can only get from the public, not a consulting company.
Silly arguments about whether Apco had a hand in designing the 1Malaysia concept, or whether it is based on a similar Israeli campaign, are a waste of time. Instead, we should be questioning the real value of spending millions on public relations to shore up Malaysia's image abroad while leaders at home continue to stupefy citizens with their obtuse remarks.

WASHINGTON, April 15 (Bernama) -- Disarmament and terrorism aside, the Nuclear Security Summit here did produce some winners and one of them was Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak for getting to meet President Obama privately, wrote a columnist for the influential newspaper, The Washington Post.

A day after the summit closed, Al Kamen devoted part of his "In The Loop" column on Wednesday on the select group of leaders from among the 36 heads of state of the 46 countries invited by Obama for the summit who also had bilateral meetings with the president.

"The winners at this week's nuclear summit were easily identified: They were the ones who got bilats with President Obama -- not a bodybuilding term, it stands for bilateral, or one-on-one, chat -- showing their prestige and importance," he said.

Chinese President Hu Jintao who had 90 minutes with Obama headed the list, Kamen said and went on to name a few more -- King Abdullah of Jordan, Najib, President Viktor Yanukovich of Ukraine, President Serzh Sargsian of Armenia , Nigerian acting president Goodluck Jonathan and Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit.

The columnist said Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama reportedly requested but did not get a meeting with Obama.

Obama had about a dozen bilateral meetings, starting with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and rounding off with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the only leader from the European Union to do so.

Najib's first ever bilateral consultations with Obama lasted 40 minutes inside the huge Walter E.Washington Convention Center on Monday before the summit began the same afternoon.

On Wednesday, the prime minister was asked of his meeting with Obama after presenting his views on the key pillars of cooperation in Malaysia-U.S relations at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).

"The very fact that you can get a piece of the President's time by itself during a summit of 47 leaders means something, it means you are important enough and that Malaysia is important enough," he said.

Najib was the only leader to have the bilateral from among the six Southeast Asian countries attending the summit. The others were Indonesian Vice-President Boediono, Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Thai Deputy Premier Trairong Suwankiri and Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.

Najib said he looked forward to the re-engagement of Malaysia by the Obama administration and he expected a productive and exciting phase of relations ahead.

In his speech, the prime minister said the cooperation between the US and Southeast Asian countries had helped the region fight terrorism, including the Jemaah Islamiah militant network linked to Al Qaeda.

"Indeed, cooperation between Malaysia and the United States in this regard has never been stronger. It is my hope that this cooperation will be sustained long into the future," he said.

Malaysia and the US could also explore ways to expand maritime cooperation to ensure secure passage through major sea lanes and fight piracy, said Najib. There was also significant potential for collaboration between Malaysia and the US in responding to natural disasters.

"The Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004 and Cyclone Nargis in 2008 showed that assistance from outside the region would be critical in the event of exceptionally severe disasters. The people of Southeast Asia appreciate America's assistance in our moments of need," said Najib.

Today is the first Tamil New Year my colleagues the Hindraf lawyers and myself are celebrating with our families and loved ones since our release from ISA arrest, detention and “conviction” without trial for 514 days from 13/12/2007 to 9/5/2009.
Even though at work, I had the pleasure of receiving all day telephone calls and SMSes wishing me a Happy Tamil New Year.
At about 2.30 p.m I had chance to rush home to join my family for the first “freedom” Tamil New Year vegetarian lunch. It meant a lot especially after having missed it for two years.
Observing Tamil New Year behind bars at Kamunting Prison@ Malaysia’s Guantanamo Bay is in itself a form of torture that UMNO intended us to suffer and labour from.
My wife Indra recollected the last two years of our separated Tamil New Year and tears were rolling down her cheeks.
I never had and will never have any regrets for this, was, and is part and parcel of the Hindraf Makkal Sakthi people power struggle.
On this day I also recognise that had it not been because of the continuous and persistent Hindraf people power forces campaigning for our release, the nationwide Hindu temple prayers, people praying for us at home, we would all still be languishing in jail.
Irrespective by 3.45p.m. I am back in the office writing this piece.

Assuming the PKR Selangor state government approves ten acres per Tamil school it would only amount to 980 acres. But there is a precedent that for the poor Malay muslims Yayasan Basmi Kemiskinan Selangor was, without any fuss, alienated 1,977.428 acres of land that is about 2000% higher than the 980 acres we had requested for 98 Tamil schools in Selangor.

In the United States of America the blacks succeeded in getting their voting rights pursuant to the Voting Rights Act 1965, ie., eight years after Malaysia’s independence when we got our first right to vote. But within 44 years USA has had a quantum leap by having it’s first black and ‘muslim’ President and Chief Executive of the USA in the person of Barack Husein Obama duly elected by the civil society, 90% of whom are white caucasian Americans.
Going by PKR’s Anwar Ibrahim’s standards there can never even be a single Indian MP or State Assemblyman as their sole criteria is Malay only candidates, as we see in Teluk Kemang, Lunas, Ijok and Hulu Selangor.
Similarly under the 53 year old UMNO regime rule, UMNO would not even give about the lowest level chief administrative job, ie., a post masters job to an Indian.
Today we get to hear about Indian postmasters only in the back obituary pages of the newspapers (see The Star 14/4/2010 at page N54).

Even the racist and tyrant UMNO at every general elections gives the very least 9 Parliament seats and 20 state seats in Peninsula Malaysia to make sure that the Indians get their representatives.
But in so far as PKR is corcerned and going by the choice of latest Hulu Selangor precedent in the choice of only a Malay candidate in a traditional Indian seat, soon there would be no more Indian MPs’ and ADUNs’ in Malaysia as there is not a single Indian majority Parliament or State seats.
This PKR’s racist stand was first taken in the year 2000, in the Teluk Kemang by-election, then 2001 in Lunas by-election, in the 2006 Ijok by-election and now the 2010 Hulu Selangor by-election.
This is the fourth consecutive by-election that PKR has “played out” the Indians. Traditional Indians seats have been handed over to malay candidates. And at the same time promoting further racism in Malaysia as if UMNO’s racism is not enough.

MIC mulls sacking Mugilan

KUALA LUMPUR, April 15 — The MIC is contemplating disciplinary action and a possible sacking of its Youth deputy leader, V. Mugilan, whom it accused of “stealing” the Hulu Selangor seat from its official choice.
Mugilan was said to be Umno’s pick for the April 25 by-election, but MIC has insisted that its deputy president, Datuk G. Palanivel, will represent the Barisan Nasional (BN).
“Whoever who acts to steal a seat from the MIC will face action. On top of the list now is Mugilan,” MIC president, Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu, said after a late-night emergency central working committee (CWC) meeting here yesterday.
The meeting that went past an hour was held on the eve of BN’s scheduled announcement of its candidate for the Hulu Selangor by-election.
Samy Vellu said the CWC will decide on the disciplinary action in the morning.
“We are still investigating the issue and will continue [to do so] until 10am,” he added.
The Malaysian Insider understands the long-serving party president will be meeting Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin in the morning to finalise the coalition’s choice.
Muhyiddin has appealed to BN members to stop speculating the issue.

Mugilan, who is the Hulu Selangor MIC Youth chief, is said to be popular with the voters and has been nominated by the local Umno division, much to the surprise of MIC, which has named Palanivel for the seat since 1990, where he began the first of his four terms as the constituency’s MP. He lost narrowly by 198 votes in Election 2008 to PKR’s Datuk Dr Zainal Abidin Ahmad, whose death last month triggered the by-election.
The Malaysian Insider had asked Samy Vellu if Palanivel remained the party’s endorsed candidate for the by-election, but the MIC head declined to respond: “I have no comment on that.”
The Selangor MIC has protested against what it called interference in deciding the BN candidate, who will face PKR’s choice, Datuk Zaid Ibrahim.
Nomination day for the seat, approximately the size of Malacca but with only 64,500 voters spread over three state constituencies, is on April 17

KUALA LUMPUR, April 14 — The MIC has called for an emergency meeting of its central working committee (CWC) tonight, as its tussle with Umno over the choice of candidate for the Hulu Selangor by-election continues.
Just a day before Barisan Nasional (BN) is supposed to announce its candidate, it is still unclear if MIC and its president, Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu’s choice — Datuk G. Palanivel — or the Umno-backed V. Mugilan, the Hulu Selangor MIC division Youth leader, will be named.
Samy Vellu (right) has been waiting to meet Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin all day to press his case for Palanivel, as discontent continues to grow in the ranks of party members over what they see as Umno’s bullying tactics.
Despite several meetings between Samy Vellu and Umno leaders over the week, no agreement has been struck.
Telephone calls and text messages started going out about at 5pm today, to summon the 37 CWC members for tonight’s meeting.
Several CWC members told The Malaysian Insider they had mixed feelings about the meeting and its outcome.
“We have always been close to Umno… if Umno really wants to put its candidate over the MIC’s choice, I am really surprised,” one CWC member said.
“This matter should not have come to this level. I am really surprised,” another member said.
Of the 37 CWC members, only two are aligned with Samy Vellu’s former deputy, Datuk S. Subramaniam, while one is considered neutral.
The rest are all strong supporters of the MIC president.
This meeting, a CWC member said, would also consider issuing a strong statement against interference in MIC matters and reaffirm the party’s decision to endorse Palanivel as its sole candidate for the by-election.

KUALA LUMPUR, April 14 —The Cabinet-endorsed inter-faith committee must have no powers and should only be a platform for religious dialogue, several Umno lawmakers have said today.

There has been growing discontent in the Muslim community since the establishment of the committee, especially from right-wing NGO Perkasa and, recently, the Perak Fatwa Committee led by influential state Mufti, Tan Sri Harussani Zakaria.

Batu Pahat MP and deputy education minister, Puad Zarkashi, said the panel should not be used to pressure the government on religious matters.

“This panel can be accepted as long as it does not have any authority but can [only] discuss [religious matters] so there can be common understanding to prevent sensitive issues from being raised.

“But if it is to pressure government and amend the (federal) constitution, then I would certainly not agree. It is against the constitution because Islam is the official religion and cannot be equated to other religions,” he said.

The Cabinet agreed recently to form an inter-faith committee to foster religious understanding and harmony, damaged in the past few months by religious differences such as the controversial “Allah” ruling.

It had earlier this year appointed Datuk Ilani Isahak to chair the committee and green-lighted five sub-committees to draw up proposals on how best to deal with the inter-religious conflicts.

Jerlun MP and deputy minister of international trade, Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir, claimed ignorance over the inter-religious body but nevertheless was of the view that the panel should be limited only to providing advice.

“I actually have to admit that I do not know enough about this grouping, I am not certain that it is at all a committee. What I hear is that it is a very small group of people representing different faiths, who meet regularly to talk about issues. From that, I would think their role is just to provide advice when it is needed and not for them to actually have any real authority to decide on matters.

“So if it is just on an advisory [body] and that advice may or may not be accepted by the powers that be, then I think there is really no major need to worry about it,” he said.

The government, he said, had failed to clearly explain the level of authority vested in the panel.

“I think it needs to be explained a bit better what the grouping really is. If it is a grouping like it has been reported in the media, then who actually appointed this committee and what kind of mandates do they have?

“There are so many questions. I think due to the lack of information to this so-called perceived committee, perhaps that is why Pasir Mas MP (Datuk Ibrahim Ali) reacted that way. So it has to be clearer about what this grouping does and who are its members,” he said.

Semporna MP and Rural and regional development minister, Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal, provided his own interpretation of the committee’s functions, and said it was not about faith but rather unity.

“Actually, it is not inter-faith, it is about unity,” he said.

Yesterday during the Supplementary Supply Bill debate, two BN MPs — Datuk Mohamad Aziz (Sri Gading) and Datuk Bung Moktar Radin (Kinabatangan) — called for the government to replace the panel with a racial relations committee instead.

"Mugilan's name is on that list. The president said Mugilan will be given until 10am tomorrow morning in order to investigate what he has done. Following this, disciplinary action will be taken against him."

In view of this, sources said Mugilan, who has been accused of using "backdoor tactics" to be named as the candidate, could be expelled from the party.

'Field Palani or Umno can have the seat'
During the two-hour meeting, which commenced at 10pm at the party headquarters, Samy Vellu had spoke at length regarding the controversy surrounding the candidate for the seat.

He also explained what had transpired between him, Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak and Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin with regards to this issue.

"Although he did not say who the candidate will be, the MIC president however suggested that if the BN leadership does not field (MIC deputy president G) Palanivel, then Umno can take the seat," said the sources.

Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, who is also the BN elections director, is expected to announce the BN candidate tomorrow.

Previously, reports have emerged that local Umno leaders prefer Mugilan, while MIC leaders in Hulu Selangor have warned of a boycott should Palanivel be dropped.

The by-election is on April 25 and nomination is on April 17.

PKR yesterday named its supreme council member Zaid Ibrahim for the seat which fell vacant following the death of PKR's Zainal Abidin Ahmad on March 25.

Zainal defeated four-term MP Palanivel in the March 2008 general election with a wafer-thin majority of 198 votes.

When the seat became vacant, MIC immediately submitted Palanivel's name as the candidate.

Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin upped the ante today by saying that a young candidate should be named by BN for the seat in what appears as an endorsement for Mugilan.

"While I said before that we want a youth-friendly candidate, now I am saying that we want a young candidate. I really hope that a young candidate will be fielded," he said.

Should Palanivel be dropped, it will be a massive blow for MIC and its president. The move could be viewed as Umno usurping the leadership role of the BN component party.

Nazri Aziz – the Minister of Lies

It is indeed ironic that the Minister should be so quick to accuse others of lying, for when it comes to telling lies no one has left such an indelible mark on Malaysian politics than Mohd Nazri Abdul Aziz.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mohd Nazri Abdul Aziz acts tough, talks big and throws his weight around. He thinks he is very smart and knows everything! After all, he is also the minister in charge of parliamentary affairs and the de facto Law Minister.

Those who refuse to tolerate Nazri’s nonsense have to contend with his temper tantrums and theatrics. Apart from his childish threats and taunts, the Minister has become adept through the years with turning and twisting the truth whilst calling others liars.

It was typical of him to accuse Thai pathologist Dr. Pornthip of being a liar: “She lied in the inquest and she is lying now”. Dr. Pornthip has claimed that Putrajaya has exercised "political pressure" which “could affect her work” in Southern Thailand thereby forcing her to pull out from testifying in the on-going Teoh Beng Hock inquest.

It is indeed ironic that the Minister should be so quick to accuse others of lying, for when it comes to telling lies no one has left such an indelible mark on Malaysian politics than Mohd Nazri Abdul Aziz.

Below are some examples of him lying (intentionally or unintentionally) especially in Parliament!

Compulsive Liar

In May 2004 Nazri bluffed Parliament that Suhakam’s annual report is never meant to be debated in Parliament. The truth is that it is a legislative requirement for Suhakam, a creation of Parliament, to submit annual reports to Parliament so that its findings can be debated and its recommendations deliberated on.

In April 2005, Nazri tried to fool parliament by claiming that the “Cabinet’s plan to form a select committee on water privatization was dropped because the King wanted water privatisation to be in place by the end of the year”. Lim Kit Siang told Nazri not to drag the King into the issue and that “…the Royal address is the policy pronouncement of the government of the day”.

In the same month, Nazri came up with a tall tale that “Bibles in Bahasa Malaysia cannot be circulated in the country as this could be seen as an effort to spread Christianity among the Malays….The prohibition had been in force since Independence and was in line with the Constitution” (Star, 13 Apr. 2005). A week later the then PM Abdullah Badawi said that there was no such ban.

In June 2006 Nazri misled parliament into believing that there “is no basis for the allegation of corruption in the judiciary as contained in a letter written by former High Court judge Datuk Syed Ahmad Idid (for) the case has been investigated by the Government, the ACA and the AG” (Star, 28 June 2006). The judge who resigned in 1996, wrote a 33-page letter highlighting corruption, abuse of power and personal misconduct in the judiciary.

Contrary to what Nazri had claimed, Syed Idid in a NST interview (11 June 2006) revealed that the allegations were “never really investigated”. This was confirmed by a former Attorney-General, Abu Talib Othman (Mingguan Malaysia, 4 June 2006) who added that “on the other hand, the poor judge who wrote it was investigated”.

In July 2006, Nazri conveyed a false sense of security in Sabah when he told parliament that the presence of foreigners, including those with IMM13 documents, do not cause social, security and economic problems in Sabah. A leader of the Sabah Progressive Party (then a member of BN) said “it would be better for him (Nazri) to keep his mouth shut”.

In May 2007, Bernard Dompok, another Minister in the PM’s Department, resigned as the Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Integrity because he disagreed with Nazri over the committee’s scope of duties. Nazri tried to explain away the resignation by saying that Dompok was influenced by Lim Kit Siang. Dompok’s reply to his colleague was: “It’s a cheap shot!”

On 21 August 2007, after opening a seminar on the thoughts and academic works of the late Tan Sri Ahmad Ibrahim the then Chief Justice (CJ) Ahmad Fairuz in a press conference advocated the abolition of the English common law system. Nazri denied on behalf of Fairuz, in Parliament, that the latter had made such a proposal. Lim Kit Siang released a newspaper tape transcript as proof that Nazri was lying on behalf of Fairuz!

When the country did not have a Chief Judge for eight months Nazri created the wrong impression that the Chief Justice can act as the Chief Judge of Malaya. He challenged his critics: “Show me where it says, either in the Constitution or elsewhere, that it cannot be done” (Star, 19 Aug. 2007).

The Bar Council showed him that provisions in the Constitution state that the posts of Chief Justice and Chief Judge of Malaya are independent of one another and therefore if read together with the Courts of Judicature Act 1964, the CJ should appoint a Federal Court Judge to act as the Chief Judge of Malaya!

On 25 Sept. 2007, about two thousand lawyers, defying police, marched from the Palace of Justice to the PM’s office in Putrajaya to hand over a memorandum calling for a Royal Commission of Inquiry to probe the brokering of the appointment of judges and to establish an independent commission for the appointment of judges.

The “Minister for the Chief Justice” (as Nazri described himself!) preferred to lie to himself and to the whole nation as to the state of the judiciary: “There’s no need for such a judicial commission (in charge of judicial appointments) as there is no crisis in our judiciary…No crisis, no problems. I don’t see any scandal.”

Conman of Parliament

In Oct, 2007, Anwar Ibrahim who had made public the Lingam video clip said that the source of the clip would come forward only if there was a setting up of a Royal Commission of Inquiry instead of an independent panel, as such a panel would not be able to provide protection to the whistleblower.

Nazri gave the assurance that the person or persons who took the video had no reason not to cooperate. He said “a new identity or even new look can be arranged”. Such measures were defined under “the Witness Protection Bill tabled recently in Parliament” (Star, 8 Oct. 2007). He later admitted there was no such bill!

In May 2008, Nazri told Parliament that the Election Commission (EC) was to be blamed for the last-minute decision to cancel the use of indelible ink in the March polls. This was far from the truth because the EC chairman had unwittingly revealed that the cabinet had objected to the use of the indelible ink and that he was ordered to take the blame for the decision!

In Nov. 2008 Nazri told Parliament that former Lord President Salleh Abas and other senior judges involved in the judicial crisis in 1988 were not “sacked” but were asked to “retire early”. Karpal Singh insisted that action be taken against Nazri for allegedly lying to the House.

Nazri, in a press conference, claimed that he had made a mistake, adding he had no intention of misleading the House. But he refused to explain or apologise to Parliament. Telling the press would suffice! For the first time, a press conference took precedence over Parliament! And of course Nazri got off scot free again!

On 9 Nov. 2009 Nazri sparked an uproar in Parliament when he said “judiciary fixer” V.K. Lingam had been let off the hook “because he had broken no law”…as he might “have just acted to fix the appointment of judges as if he was brokering the appointment of senior judges to impress people”.

“I am not denying that it was Lingam in the tape. But I am also saying that there are a lot of conmen in this world. Who knows he might have just acted when he was calling the so-called judges to impress,” he said.

Nazri continued on his charade by declaring that he would persuade the AG to engage Karpal Singh to prosecute Lingam! The AG declined and the issue is now history! Can there be a bigger conman in Parliament than Nazri?

The truth that Nazri could not twist or turn is that the Royal Commission of Inquiry had found sufficient reason for the relevant authorities to take appropriate action against those implicated for breaches of the Sedition Act, the Penal Code, the Official Secrets Act, the Legal Profession Act and other laws.

In Jan. this year Nazri implicitly placed the blame of the aftermath of the court decision on the Allah case on the Catholic Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur, Murphy Pakiam. He said it was too late for a dialogue and that the court is the only way to bring an end to the “Allah” debate.

He claimed that his Cabinet colleagues, including fellow Minister in the PM’s Department Datuk Jamil Khir Baharom, have been “pushing to bring religious leaders to the table to settle the simmering stew” and it was “the failure of the rundingan that resulted in the matter being brought to court”.

“It’s not the fault of the government. Let it be known that it was Tan Sri Pakiam, not the government, who brought the matter to court,” Nazri added (Malaysian Insider, 18 Jan. 2010). There was in reality no “rundingan” since the Allah controversy began but only the rude and ridiculous dictates of the then Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar.

In March this year, in the course of the verbal war in parliament over APCO and the government’s decision to refer Anwar to the Parliament's Rights and Privileges Committee, Saifuddin Nasution Ismail (PKR-Machang) said that Nazri should also be referred to the committee for misleading the House last year.

Nazri had used a repealed law in his speech when winding up the debates on the 2010 Budget touching on the oil royalty issue requested by the Kelantan state government. Saifuddin pointed out that Nazri “being the minister in charge of laws...knew it cannot be used but he continued doing it. This is clearly an act of misleading the House”.

Nazri replied that whatever he said in the House was never with an intention to mislead the MPs. (Sounds familiar?) As an “anak jantan” (one who is brave), he was willing to be investigated (The Sun, 22 Mar. 2010).

Nazri is really a coward. He knows he can hide behind the Speaker and his deputies who will “protect” and give him all the leeway to lie and get away with it – surely the examples above are proof enough!

On April Fool’s Day this year it was reported that Information Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim has urged government information officers to be more aggressive in countering “lies” spread by the opposition against the government so that the people will receive correct information.

Instead of taking the rakyat for a ride and getting all riled up over lies supposedly spread by the Opposition, Rais should do a “post-mortem” and get his own house in order, beginning with the Prime Minister’s Department!

Nazri will one day leave behind a legacy of lies!

Don't ignore us, warn the Chinese

HULU SELANGOR WATCH Peter Yap is a staunch Pakatan Rakyat supporter who has the ears of the Chinese community in Kampung Asam Kumbang. And when a by-election is around the corner, his vote carries a staggering amount of weight.

Kampung Asam Kumbang is a predominantly Chinese new village, five minutes from Hulu Selangor's principal district of Kuala Kubu Baru. Of the 588 households there, 95 percent are Chinese and the rest Indian.

Unapologetically decked out in DAP flags and banners, Yap's home stands out like a swatch of colour in a black and white movie. But the former Kampung Asam Kumbang branch chairman nurses a deep resentment towards the party.

“DAP was struggling financially during the campaigning for the 2008 general election,” he remembered. “K A Ramu (a DAP candidate who ran for and lost the Kuala Kubu Baru seat in 2008) and I pooled our money to help them. We even went door-to-door to collect votes on Pakatan's behalf.”

When Pakatan won the Selangor seat, however, DAP bit the hand that fed the party. Yap's application to renew his position as branch chairman was rejected and he was instead instructed to open a branch in Taman Bukit Bunga. He refused.

“We dug the well and DAP drank all the water,” he said angrily. “When Pakatan won the seat, I thought it meant a better life for the people in my constituency. I was wrong.”

“The state government made no move to fix even the most basic of problems like dilapidated signboards and poor drainage. How could we expect them to tackle the more serious issues of land titles and economic development?”

While Yap readily acknowledged that the Chinese community is nowhere near as marginalised as the Indians and Orang Asli, he warned that they don't take kindly to being ignored.

Concerned over weak economy

Many Chinese are still landless despite having lived in the district's 13 new villages for over three decades. Selangor Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim recently addressed the issue by saying the the state government would give 99-year leases to families of all races who have been living in Hulu Selangor for more than 15 years.

Yap, however, remained unimpressed.

“The Chinese have been very patient,” he said. “Just because we don't kick up a ruckus doesn't mean we don't care or are not paying attention.”

A weak economy is also a thorn in the sides of many Chinese. Most residents of Kampung Asam Kumbang are either middle-aged or elderly.

The young have left for greener pastures in Kuala Lumpur because of the lack of development in their hometown. According to Yap, there aren't enough factories in Hulu Selangor to provide the number of jobs needed.

Factories that do provide employment opportunities, on the other hand, offer a measly wage. Factory workers in Hulu Selangor are reportedly paid a maximum of RM18 a day. Many have opted to suffer the long commute to Petaling Jaya and Damansara for the sake of a decent income.

“Those who are left have seen many MPs pass though this constituency,” Yap pointed out. “They don't swallow promises so easily now. What they want is someone who is on the ground and connected to their reality. Race is not an issue.”

According to Yap, his efforts won Pakatan 1,400 votes in Kampung Asam Kumbang in 2008. Now, he claimed, they would look to him before casting their vote on April 25. And despite his unhappiness with DAP, he is firm about standing by Pakatan.

“It's not about one party but the coalition,” he said. “And right now, the Chinese still believe in Pakatan.”

Subdued Pakatan presence

Gerakan and PKR flags also fly high in Kampung Sejantung, Kalumpang, another predominantly Chinese area. Almost every small business and home in the village has stated its allegiance.

At the end of the road, an MCA community hall and a makeshift DAP centre defiantly face each other. But while the former was abuzz with activity, the latter was closed.

Similar sights were observed from Hulu Bernam to Serendah. Scores of busy BN centres dotted the roadside while a smattering of Pakatan centres were either closed or subdued.

The Chinese form 26.4 percent of Hulu Selangor's 64,500 voters. After MIC's G Palanivel's recent boast that he doesn't need Chinese votes to win, that percentage could have shrunk for BN.

However, as Yap cautioned, if Pakatan doesn't start paying more attention to the Chinese, it could face a similar quandary.

The Hulu Selangor by-election will take place on April 25. PKR will field Zaid Ibrahim, its supreme council member and once an Umno MP for Kota Baru. He is likely to face Palanivel.

Saudara Aminchenor. Pertama sekali kalau hendak hapuskan hak mengundi bukan bumiputera maka adakah saudara mencadangkan supaya perlembagaan kita dihapuskan terlebih dahulu? Hal ini disebabkan hak mengundi semua rakyat Malaysia termaktub dalam perlembagaan.

Artikel 119 Perlembagaan Persekutuan.
Artikel 119 (1) menyebut bahawa ‘”Tiap-tiap warganegara yang (a) telah mencapai umur dua puluh satu tahun pada tarikh kelayakan; dan (b) bemastautin dalam sesuatu bahagian pilihanraya pada tarikh kelayakan itu atau, jika tidak bermastautin sedemekian, adalah seorang pengundi tak hadir, dan (c) didaftarkan, di bawah peruntukan mana-mana undang-undang yang berhubungan dengan pilihan raya, dalam daftar pemilih sebagai pemilih dalam bahagian pilihan raya tempat dia bermastautin pada tarikh kelayakan; berhak mengundi….”

Bagaimana Aminchenor hendak menjadi seorang pejuang Melayu yang tulen jika kesalahan bahasa Melayu yang begitu asas pun tidak dikuasai dengan baik?

Perkataan hapus adalah kata dasar yang perlu ada kata kerja untuk menjadi sesuatu perkataan yang bersifat kata kerja. Anda sepatutnya menyatakan bahawa “Menghapuskan Hak Mengundi Kaum Bukan Bumiputera” .

Hak berparti dan berpersatuan termaktub dalam perniagaan dan undang-undang. Jika hendak menghapuskan kehuluran dan daulatnya boleh. Keadaan ini juga menandakan penghapusan Rukun Negara kita merupakan satu tindakan yang tidak bersopan.

Kesalahan bahasa Melayu yang ketara sekali lagi berlaku. Pertama anda seharusnya menggunakan perkataan Membatalkan. Kata kerja mem perlu mendasari kata dasar batal baharu boleh menjadi kata kerja. Kedua anda tidak perlu menggunakan perkataan yang mendepani bukan milik kaum Bumiputera. Ayat anda seharusnya "Membatalkan semua parti poltik bukan milik kaum bumiputera di Tanah Melayu".

Parti mereka tidak sepatutnya ada perkataan ini. Hanya parti mereka ini amat perkauman dan bukannya menggunakan perkataan racist (bahasa Inggeris). Ayat yang sepatutnya ialah "Parti mereka akan bersifat perkauman dan jika parti komponen yang seiring dengan parti Bumiputera sekalipun mereka tidak akan membantu Bumiputera. Sebaliknya mereka menuntut hak milik Bumiputera yang merupakan kaum Peribumi".

Janganlah jadi perosak bahasa!
