KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 19 (Bernama) -- MIC President Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said 817 Tamil school students scored 7A's in this year's Primary School Evaluation Test (UPSR) examination, reflecting the growing importance placed by parents on their children's education.
While congratulating the students, he said the number of 7A scorers this year was higher compared to 725 students last year.
"There is an increase of 92 students this year who scored 7A's and I am very happy that the numbers have been increasing over the years," he said in a statement here TUesday.
He attributed the students' success to the hard work put in by them and their parents as well as the strategies implemented by the MIC through the Maju Institute of Educational Development (MIED).
This included printing and distribution of UPSR Revision books to Tamil school students every year.
The books were compiled by teachers, headmasters and coordinators of Tamil schools and was financed by MIED.
Samy Vellu said the MIED would reward the 817 students for their excellent performance.
"They are our role models and I believe that they can motivate other students next year to achieve excellent results," he said, adding that he hoped the number of students from Tamil schools scoring 7A's next year would surpass the 1,000 mark.
He said the MIC would continue to gauge the feedback from Tamil school teachers and headmasters on more ways to improve the academic achievements of the students.
MIC Vice-President and Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam also congratulated the students and hoped their success would spur more students to excel in their examinations.
