Five-foot way is home for jobless man, son

A jobless man and his adopted son have been evicted from a public flat for not paying rent.

KUALA LUMPUR: A jobless man and his adopted son have been living on the five-foot way of their flat for about two weeks now after Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) evicted them from the unit for not paying the rent.

Chandra Mohan, 51, said he had been staying in PPR Pekan Batu 5, Jalan Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur for the past 11 years.

DBKL officers evicted Chandra Mohan two weeks ago after he failed to pay the monthly rent of RM124.

“Since then, I am living on five-foot way of my unit with my son. We have no place or relatives to go to,” he told FMT.

His adopted son, Arvind, 14, said his father was an odd-job worker but unable to work now after falling ill.

“My father cannot stand or walk for more than 10 minutes. He is also suffering from trauma after the death of my mother last year,” he said.

“I have stopped going to school since January to help my father. But the money I get from doing odd-jobs is not enough to pay the rent,” said Arvind.

He added that they did not have money to buy food and most of the time slept with an empty stomach.

“Sometimes, neighbours give us money to buy food,” he said, adding that they use a public toilet nearby.

“We hope someone will help us to find a place to stay,” said Arvind, who wants to continue his studies.

Non-governmental organisation Malaysian Tamilar Indru said politicians and the Welfare Department should offer aid and help find a place to stay for the homeless man.

Its secretary, G Gunasegaran, said Chandra Mohan had been denied aid by the Welfare Department.

“We want the department to offer aid to Chandra Mohan immediately,” he said.

Gunasegaran said Deputy Federal Territories Minister J Loga Bala Mohan, minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor’s special aide R Ramanan and DBKL advisory board member P Malarvily Gunaseelan should look into Chandra Mohan’s plight.

He said Arvind did not have a birth certificate nor identity card and the NGO would help him get the documents.
