Do not mess with us, IGP warns gangs

The IGP warns gangs not to mess with the cops and that the authorities will go all out to wipe out crime in the country.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Inspector General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar today sent a chilling message to gangs in the country, telling the troublemakers not to “mess with the police force”.

“Don’t mess with us and do not try to threaten us,” he told reporters at a Hari Raya open house here.

Yesterday, the notorious Gang 04 allegedly spray painted gang symbols on the walls of a police beat base and the Banting district police headquarters in Selangor.

The 04 number, religious swastika symbol and “RIP” (rest in peace) were spray painted in red on the walls and doors of the beat base while the same symbols appeared on the walls of shoplots in the vicinity.

Kuala Langat OCPD Supt Nordin Manan was reported to have said that the police were investigating the culprits behind the graffiti.

The IGP was also firm that the Ops Cantas, an operation by the police to crackdown on crime, would continue until criminal activities are wiped out.

“There is no time frame for this Ops,” he said, when asked the duration of Ops Cantas.

Almost 700 people were arrested within 48-hours since the launch of Ops Cantas in Selangor. Backed by the Crime Prevention Act 1959, the police are expected to arrest more people nationwide in the next few days.

‘No such thing as shoot to kill’

Khalid also refuted claims that police were trigger happy in gunning down five 04 gang members in Penang two days ago.

Khalid said the five were killed, when the police acted in self defense.

“My men were defending themselves. We do not simply open fire just to shoot anybody. We have our own standard operating procedure,” Khalid said.

On Monday, the five men were gunned down in an ambush by a special police team in an apartment in Sungai Nibong.

Police seized three pistols from the five men aged between 23 and 27 years old. Khalid had earlier said that police opened fire after they were shot at first.

The five gang members were allegedly involved in 12 shooting cases in three states. Police have been monitoring the gang for several months and had set up a special team to investigate all the shooting and murder cases.

Meanwhile, Khalid said the family of the deceased are free to request for an inquest as long as procedures are followed.

“I have no problem if they wanted to call for an inquest,” he said briefly.

Asked of the families claim that the five were asleep when they were ambushed, shot and killed, he said:” Anybody can say anything…we are carrying out our responsibility.”
