MELAKA, Sept 1 – The opening of Sekolah Harapan (School of Hope) for pregnant teenagers, which was scheduled for today, has been postponed to September 16, said Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam.
He said this followed various logistics issues such as the deployment of staff which had not been ironed out by the Melaka Islamic Religious Council (Maim).
“For starters, we need between five and six female staff such as teachers, wardens and counsellors,” he told reporters after presenting contributions to former British soldiers at his office in Seri Negeri here today.
Sekolah Harapan, which will operate in an old building owned by Syarikat Air Melaka Berhad in Jasin, currently has three teenagers who have applied to enrol in the school.
Mohd Ali said Maim also sought a suitable candidate, such as a retired religious teacher, who had the experience and dedication to become the school’s headmaster.
He said those interested in the post, either full-time or part-time, could contact the council, adding that ex-teachers and social workers were encouraged to apply.
Mohd Ali said the state government had allocated RM500,000 annually to run the school, which included lodging, food and cost of child delivery.
During the ceremony, two former British soldiers and two widows of former British soldiers received contributions from the Royal Commonwealth Ex-Service League, based in the United Kingdom, through efforts by the British Ex-Servicemen’s Association Malaysia. – Bernama
