Anti-Malaysia protests go on in Jakarta

JAKARTA: The anti-Malaysia demonstrations in front of the Malaysian embassy here are continuing, with a group of students participating in the protests on Wednesday.

The students, claiming to represent the Jakarta law undergraduates movement, defiled the Malaysian flag with egg, set fire to it and hurled it into the compound of the embassy.

They also threw rotten eggs and salted fish into the embassy compound and defiled the name plaque of the embassy with wheat flour and rotten salted fish.

Several of them carried banners which bore words condemning Malaysia, saying diplomacy was dead and wanting Malaysia to be "crushed".

The demonstration, which went on for about 30 minutes from about 11am, was monitored by 60 policemen.

The protests come in the wake of three Indonesian enforcement officers having been allegedly arrested by Malaysian authorities in waters near Bintan island earlier this month.

The alleged arrests had come after seven Malaysian fishermen were detained by Indonesian authorities for allegedly trespassing in Indonesian waters.

The officers and fishermen have all been freed since by both countries.

However, the protests are continuing because the demonstrators claim that Malaysia had tarnished Indonesia's image and should apologise to the republic.

Groups of people here have been criticising the Indonesian government, claiming that it was not being firm with Malaysia in the matter. - Bernama
