KUALA LUMPUR, April 8 — Kuala Lumpur City Hall is in the midst of upgrading Brickfields here into a “Little India”.
The six-month work to upgrade the area, beginning this month, would involve 30 traders and cost about RM35 million, said Federal Territories and Urban Well-being Deputy Minister Datuk M. Saravanan.
He said the traders would be temporarily re-located to a field about 100 metres from the present site, adding that they were given 30 days to re-locate.
Saravanan said City Hall last week issued a notice on the re-location to the traders who comprised 14 restaurateurs, two fruit sellers and 14 florists.
The deputy minister was speaking to reporters at a function to announce the upgrading of Brickfields into a “Little India”.
On the 30 traders, Saravanan said 13 did not possess a valid licence, adding that City Hall would assist them to obtain the licences.
On a related matter, he said City Hall plans to build more shops to encourage participation by other races as well as under the 1 Malaysia concept.
He said the project was mooted in keeping with the aspirations of Datuk Seri Najib Razak during his walkabout in Brickfields after taking over as prime minister in April last year. — Bernama
