156 Religious Schools Registered As SABKs

KLANG, April 29 (Bernama) -- A total of 156 religious schools were registered with the Education Ministry as government-aided religious schools (SABKs) this year, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, said most of them were from Selangor, Perak and Kelantan.

"The registration of 23 religious schools in Selangor as SABKs is something to be lauded and we hope this will be a catalyst to convert some 10 more integrated religious primary schools in the state into SABKs," he said at the opening ceremony of the Sekolah Menengah Agama Tinggi Sultan Hishamuddin here Thursday.

The school was officially opened by Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah of Selangor.

Muhyiddin also sought the Sultan's permission to convert religious secondary schools in Selangor into SABKs so that they too were at par with other schools in the mainstream education system.

"Hopefully, with the consent of the Sultan as the head of Islam in Selangor, it will encourage more religious schools to register with the Education Ministry," he said.

He said registering with the Education Ministry was a boon for these schools as many of them faced financial constraints with some even having to close.

By becoming SABKs, their needs in terms of facilities, human capital, learning materials and other resouces would be looked into by the ministry, he said, adding that students from SABKs also stood a better chance of furthering their education to the highest level.

Financial aid provided by the Federal Government to SABKs from 2006 to date stood at RM216.2 million.
