SHAH ALAM, Jan 27 — The Selangor Pakatan Rakyat government has decided to make public documents on all assets and contributions given to its affiliate, the state’s Poverty Eradication Foundation.
The foundation was established by the previous Barisan Nasional (BN) government and alleged discrepancies were discovered when PR took power in the country’s richest state.
“We will declassify the documents pertaining to the assets and contributions made to the foundation so the public can see them,” Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim (picture) told a press conference here.
The foundation has refused to cooperate with Khalid’s government in declassifying the documents but the Selangor Mentri Besar said it is legally bound to do so.
“The Association Article clearly states that they are required to answer and report to the state government,” he said.
The move is widely seen as Khalid’s effort to gain ground in the war between PR and BN. The former are currently on the defensive against what has been described as a BN onslaught.
Khalid’s administration is facing an ongoing graft probe in illegal sand-mining by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) which PR leaders believe is a strategy by the BN-ruled federal government to destabilise and unseat its pact.
It also understood that Malay support for the PR state government has deteriorated following its backing for the controversial ‘Allah’ ruling allowing the Catholic weekly Herald to use the term to describe the Christian God in its Bahasa Malaysia section.
“For now, this is what we’ll do. Expect to see a thicker report in the future,” he said
