PUTRAJAYA, Jan 21 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) today arrested four more people, all of them government officers, and raised to 38 the number of people detained over the theft and smuggling of sand by a syndicate, the MACC headquarters said in a statement.

It said three of them were caught in Pahang and one in Johor.

The MACC said 20 of the 38 people had been remanded for between four and seven days while the rest had been released on MACC bond after their statements were recorded.

Earlier today, the Kajang Magistrate’s Court remanded nine of the suspects for five days from today to assist in the MACC investigation.

Yesterday, the MACC announced the arrest of 34 people in five states on suspicion of having been involved in stealing and smuggling sand. — Bernama
