GEORGE TOWN: Umno Permatang Pauh chairman Mohd Zaidi Mohd Said has challenged Lim Guan Eng to quit as Penang Chief Minister if it is proven that at least five Chinese-owned businesses are conducting illegal activities.

Referring to Lim’s challenge to him to “show five places of illegal businesses”, Mohd Zaidi said he would do so within a month.

“Lim should accept my challenge just as I have accepted his,” he told a press conference at the Permatang Pauh Umno office today.

He said the media had misreported his statement at the recent Umno general assembly and screened a video recording of his speech to back his claim.

He clarified that he said some, not all, Chinese had been carrying out illegal activities in Penang to get rich.

“I spoke of some Chinese and used the word ‘sometimes’ when saying their economic strength was generated from illegal businesses like gambling, prostitution and other vices,” he said.

“But the word ‘some’ and ‘sometimes’ were omitted from the media reports. I did not generalise about the Chinese community. My speech was reported out of context. As a result, I have been heavily criticised by many people, including Barisan Nasional friends from MCA and Gerakan.”

He said he was basically criticising poor enforcement against illegal activities in Penang and that he was more critical of federal enforcement agencies such as the police and immigration, and state agencies like municipal councils and the Islamic Religious Department.

“Although 90% of my speech criticised the enforcement agencies, it was hardly reported in the media.

“My speech emphasised that such illegal activities would continue to flourish if enforcement agencies were to continue in their corrupt ways and collaborate with the perpetrators.”
