(CNN) -- French lawmakers are scheduled to vote Wednesday on a law to ban paying for sex -- a potential move to clamp down on prostitution, which is currently legal in France.

France's lower house, the National Assembly, is expected to approve the bill Wednesday and send it to the upper house, the Senate, French media report.

The Senate would then need to OK the bill before it would become law -- a process that could take months.

The measure would impose fines of at least 1,500 euros against people caught paying for sex.
