PAS appoints non-Muslim members as councillors

By FMT Staff

SHAH ALAM: True to its pledge to recognise and uphold its commitment to its non-Muslims supporters, PAS last night surprised many when four of its members took their oath of office before Selangor PAS Commissioner Hasan Ali.

The four were deputy chief of its non-Muslim supporters wing K Deepakaran and members A Arun, S Lakshamanan and Low Hock Khien.

They were appointed to the Klang City Council and local councils in Hulu Selangor, Kuala Selangor and Selayang respectively.

The four filled the positions set aside under the PAS quota.

Their oath of office included a pledge to immediately resign and compensate PAS if they decide to defect.

PAS was allocated 67 local council seats under the Selangor Pakatan Rakyat administration.

'This is how PAS works'

Meanwhile, Hassan said this is the first time PAS has appointed non-Muslims as councillors in Selangor.

Before this, he said, Kelantan implemented the system of appointing non-Muslims as local councillors or district or village chiefs.

“What is certain is that it is a record especially since the launch of the supporters club and its upgrading to wing status, equivalent to that of the youth and women wings.

“I believe this is the first time PAS has made such a move … we are committed to recognising the role played by the non-Muslim supporters in PAS,” he added.

He said the various local councils were initially shocked to receive PAS’ nominations.

“They were at first shocked to receive the names… some even called to clarify. This is how PAS works... this is our way of acknowledging the support of non-Muslims,” he added.

Last month, PAS moved to allow delegates from its youth wing to debate at its 56th annual convention in Kota Baru, much to the surprise of many.

This is the third reshuffle in the Selangor administration since the Pakatan regime took over in March 2008.

This being the first time that PAS Selangor had accepted non-Muslim officials, it had to make amendments to its swearing-in ceremony to accommodate the change last night..

Both Muslim and non-Muslim appointees were made to sign a pledge to quit immediately and compensate the party if they defect.

The quantum of compensation would be determined by the party leadership.
