KUALA LUMPUR, July 11 —Outspoken Perkasa president Datuk Ibrahim Ali claimed today that any formation of a Chinese version of Perkasa was “extremist” as it went against the basic principles of the country’s constitution.
The original Perkasa man slammed MCA vice-president Datuk Donald Lim’s recent remarks that a Chinese Perkasa should be set up to combat Perkasa’s growing influence in the country.
“This is an extremist remark... it is uncalled for. Perkasa is not racist. Our struggles, our framework is within the country’s constitution.
“We are fighting to ensure that Article 153 of the Federal Constitution is practiced and respected,” reasoned an exasperated Ibrahim.
The Pasir Mas MP told The Malaysian Insider that individuals like Lim, MCA Youth Chief Datuk Dr. Wee Ka Siong as well as MCA president Datuk Seri Dr. Chua Soi Lek made the Chinese party look bad.
“There are good MCA leaders. It’s only these few who make the party look bad. It’s not the party, it’s the leaders,” said Ibrahim.
The one-time deputy minister claimed that Lim’s remarks were proof that Chinese political parties were out to play politics to be the heroes of the Chinese community.
“Chinese political parties are now trying to play politics to become the hero of the Chinese. People like Donald Lim should instead work hard to compliment Barisan Nasional’s (BN) unity. That’s how MCA should work.
“How do you lead a multiracial country like this?” said the Perkasa man.
Ibrahim’s remarks were in response to Lim’s recent calls for a Chinese version of Perkasa.
The MCA vice-president who suggested the idea, also gave a strong indication that the proper body to take the role would be the vocal Kuala Lumpur Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH).
“The Chinese community and Chinese associations such as the KLSCAH can play such a role. MCA can only respond up to a certain level — it should be NGOs versus their counterparts,” said Lim.
But Ibrahim also alleged that MCA was now falling into the DAP’s “Chinese agenda” trap.
“MCA is slowly falling into the trap which DAP is in,” added the Pasir Mas MP.
