PETALING JAYA, March 30 (Bernama) -- Willingness to meet the people is among the four prerequisites for elected representatives so that they can be accepted by the general public as a whole, said Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
The Prime Minister said elected representatives must get down on the ground frequently to look at the problems faced by their constituents.
"It sounds easy but sometimes it is also not done by us fully," he said, adding that an elected representative must be easily contacted and capable of resolving the problems of the rakyat.
"They must also fulfill their promises as an elected representative. Such characteristic must be present in the elected representative," he said when launching the Charity Night of 'Badan Amal Selangor' (Kasih), at the Grand Dorsett Hotel, in Subang Jaya, near here Tuesday night.
Also present were the Prime Minister's wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor in her capacity as Kasih president, Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Noh Omar and his wife, Prof Datin Seri Dr Aishah Salleh, who is also Kasih vice-president.
Najib said the wives of elected representatives and former leaders must also be active in charitable organisations such as Kasih as they could complement the duties and responsibilities of their husbands as community leaders.
These charitable programmes were in line with what had been stressed by the government all this while, besides forming one of the main principles emphasised in the New Economic Model (NEM) which was launched Tuesday, he said.
He said the NEM emphasised that national development should be inclusive where no one would be left out or neglected in the transformation and development carried out in the country.
Earlier in her speech, Rosmah called on more wives of Barisan Nasional (BN) leaders and former leaders in Selangor to become members of Kasih, which has a membership of only about 70 currently.
She said Kasih had an important role to play in portraying the commitment of the leaders' wives to provide service to the people in Selangor, especially the women and children in terms of welfare and social aspects.
The charity night succeeded in collecting RM2.8 million which would be distributed to the less fortunate group in Selangor.
