Bahasa Malaysia Will Remain As Main Medium Of Instruction In Universities

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 23 (Bernama) -- Bahasa Malaysia will remain as the main medium of instruction in local universities, said Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

However, he said, education development at the global level demanded English proficiency and as such, public and private higher educational institutions in the country were allowed to conduct certain courses in the language with Bahasa Malaysia to be also taught as a compulsory subject.

"We also have to be aware that education development in the country involves foreign students and teaching staff as well. Also reference materials epecially where courses on science, technology and mathematics are concerned are mostly in English.

"My ministry is constantly keeping abreast of developments in the education field in determining the suitable medium of instruction needed (for a particular course) based on the prevailing factors. Even now, a specific study on this is being carried out by my ministry," he told the Dewan Rakyat Monday.

He added that Bahasa Malaysia was never neglected in higher education in the country as this would be against Article 152 of the Federal Constitution and The Education Act 1996 (Act 550).

Mohamed Khaled was replying to a question from Datuk Abdul Manan Ismail (BN-Paya Besar) who wanted to know the status of Bahasa Malaysia in local higher educational institutions.
