KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 23 (Bernama) -- PAS spiritual leader Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat has suggested that the party hold a special assembly to resolve problems, including on leadership issues, and to revive the party.
"For the sake of "tajdid" (revival), we have to hold an extraordinary general assembly," he said in an article, entitled "PAS:Keperluan muktamar khas luarbiasa?" (PAS: Need for an extraordinary general assembly?) in his blog, www.blogtokguru.com.
Besides deciding on the "problematic leaders" in the party, he said the assembly could also discuss matters on fence-sitters who could swing votes and influence the outcome of the results in an election.
"Let's get a fresh mandate once again. Although the meeting is going to take a whole day or two days, the process has to be brief and decision made must be fair, transparent, accurate, direct and clear," he added.
Nik Abdul Aziz, who is Kelantan Menteri Besar, said changes were needed in the PAS leadership at the central level.
"If this is said to be a preparation for the 13th general election, let it be and indeed it is," he added.
Nik Abdul Aziz also said he agreed with an article written by Dr Aziz Bari which was published in a local newspaper recently on some party leaders who were problematic.
In the article, Aziz , wrote on the need for PAS to take drastic measures against Selangor state executive councillor Datuk Dr Hassan Mohamad Ali, who is also Selangor PAS commissioner, for recommending that liquor be banned in the state and criticising the Selangor's special select committee for competency, accountability and transparency (Selcat).
Aziz also mentioned about PAS supporters who were pro-UMNO, and named PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang and his deputy, Nasharuddin Mat Isa, as examples.
On this matter, Nik Abdul Aziz referred to the issue on PAS and UMNO cooperation for the setting up of a unity government as brought up by Hassan and party secretary-general, Mustafa Ali.
"This matter should be brought up at the extraordinary general assembly to discuss. By holding the special assembly, there are many things which we can clarify and decide," he added.
Nasharuddin, when approached by reporters in Parliament's lobby for comments on this latest development, said a meeting of PAS' "syura" (consultative council) would have be called to discuss the matter.
"He (Nik Aziz) is the chairman of the council and it is best to hear from himself what his stand is," he said, adding that he viewed it as Nik Aziz's personal views, as for any changes to take place, a consensus had to be reached.
In KOTA BAHARU, Nik Aziz, when met at his home, said he was prepared to face any eventuality in calling for the EGM, even if it meant a split in the party.
He said his intention (in calling for the EGM) was to save the party and the Islamic principles it stood for.
