Armani told reporters later that she was only informed of her appointment at 3pm on Wednesday.
She said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz held a meeting with her at his Parliament office to announce her nomination by the Prime Minister.
She added that Wanita Umno chief Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abd Jalil confirmed her appointment when she went to the latter’s house.
“I must thank the confidence shown in me by the Prime Minister and the Senate,” she said.
Armani said she will put her experience as a senator over the past three and a half years to good use to help lift up the role of the Senate.
She said she could also count on advice from her brother Datuk Juhar Mahiruddin, who was the Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker before he was appointed the Sabah State Assembly Speaker.
Armani, 51, was a schoolteacher for 17 years before going full time into politics 15 years ago.
She is the Libaran Wanita Umno chief and has managed several by-elections and state elections in Sabah and Sarawak.
In a statement, Shahrizat said Armani’s appointment was in line with the Government’s efforts to ensure more decision-making posts were given to women.

KUALA LUMPUR: Senator Datuk Armani Mahiruddin from Sabah was appointed Senate deputy speaker, the first woman ever to hold the post in Malaysia.
Dewan Negara Speaker Datuk Wong Foon Meng said Armani was nominated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and seconded by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon.
Wong said the Senate was proud of Armani’s appointment, which also comes as Parliament is celebrating its golden jubilee this year.
