Cabinet oks Royal Commission : Hold the champagne, folks

By Haris Ibrahim,

Malaysiakini’s BREAKING NEWS at 3.48pm reports that the cabinet at its weekly meeting today agreed to the appointment of a Royal Commission of Inquiry to look into the death of Beng Hock, whilst the Malaysianinsider reported earlier that the cabinet had ordered the suspension of all anti-graft officers involved in the investigation against a number of DAP and Pakatan Rakyat (PR) executive councillors in Selangor.

The fight for justice for Beng Hock isn’t over with these cabinet decisions, folks.

The terms of reference and the composition of such a Commission are now of utmost importance.

To secure this, all planned vigils, memorials and other public gatherings to express outrage with regard to Beng Hock’s death must continue and now press for the widest possible terms of reference that will give the proposed Commission the fullest possible powers and scope to investigate every conceivable aspect of this case.

And we must press for a composition of the proposed Commission that will allow for public confidence in the same. What was previously demanded through the civil society memorandum the Friday immediately after Beng Hock’s death was that one-half of the Commission members be either from the opposition or be opposition-nominated.
