KUALA LUMPUR, June 16 (Bernama) -- Pas deputy president Nasharuddin Mat Isa said the party was open to discussions about unity and not a unity government.
He explained to reporters at Parliament House Tuesday that Pas saw an opportunity to give good suggestions to the government to help resolve political and economic and the like.
"Our stand as you know, Pas is always open to discussions with anyone. This is a decision made at the Ipoh Muktamar last year and the matter was mentioned again by the party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang in his policy speech and I feel that the issue of Pas joining Umno, joining Barisan Nasional (BN) does not arise.
"This is the stand we take, ready to discuss with anyone and that is a consensual decision. We feel we have a role to play to help develop the country," said Nasharuddin who is MP for Bachok.
He said Pas welcomed the statement by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who is also BN president, for being open to the unity government discussions.
"The response (this time) I feel for the first time is serious from the prime minister and which I personally took to my party president. I cannot talk of the party context.
"We cannot make individual decisions. The muktamar is the highest authority," he said.
On the stand of Pas' spiritual leader (Mursyidul Am) Datuk Seri Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat that whoever supported a unity government was a puppet of Umno, Nasharuddin said: "I cannot comment on what was meant by Tok Guru Nik Aziz. In the general if this unity talk or unity government is a resolution to bring Pas into BN or Umno, that is not the intention.
On the differing stands of Pas members on the unity government, he said: "This is something new, a big matter and something that needs clarification and that process is going on."
Regarding the other parties in the Opposition, Nasharuddin said the matter would be discussed by the leaders soon.
Meanwhile, Deputy Education Minister I who is also MCA Youth chief, Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong, said the stand of MCA Youth was to welcome any BN and opposition efforts to cooperate to stabilise the economy and the political situation.
"If there is unity for the benefit of the country, that would be a good thing. As announced by the prime minister, this matter will also be discussed by BN component parties.
"But if a coalition government is formed, it would also involve opposition members so I feel the possibility is low. If the opposition merges with the ruling party, who will be the opposition?," asked Wee.
