Eight out of ten thousand Malaysians hate Chin Peng? Fishy statistics? Info Dept tak lain kerja?

by Nathaniel Tan

Wow, trying to catch up on issues I wanted to blog about when I was away is proving harder than I thought (Anyone wanna point me to an article I swear I read about top cops threatening people who planned to attend 1BlackMalaysia gatherings at Old Town Kopitiams?)

Also, my thoughts have been with the family of A Gnanapragasam, who died in police custody. I will however, echo Haris in waiting for more details.

For now, though it may not be a major issue, this caught my eye:

A study carried out by the Malaysian Information Department reveals that the people do not want the government to allow former Communist Party of Malaya (CPM) leader Chin Peng to return to the country.

Information Department Director-General Datuk Abdullah Morad said the result of a survey carried out on 10,000 respondents of various ethnic groups showed that 80 per cent did not want Chin Peng to be allowed to return or to be granted citizenship.

I’ll give Dtk Abdullah here the benefit of the doubt, but I’m not gonna pretend - those numbers seem pretty damned suspicious to me.

Now, even if eight out of ten thousand people really did answer in that way, I’ve still got some further questions:

1 - What exactly was the question asked? You know how they love to ask leading questions right - “Should the ‘Butcher of Malaya,’ convicted mass murderer and war criminal Chin Peng be allowed to return home?”

2 - Did the Information Dept *really* do a survey of 10,000 people, asking them how they felt about Chin Peng? If they did, my question is: Tak lain kerja ke?!?!

I’m pretty sure it costs a helluva lotta money to survey 10,000 people. Why was that money spent to come out with a soundbyte to prop up some stupid BN line? Is this *really* what Malaysia’s Information Dept’s function is? To find out how Malaysians feel about aging old men? Remind me exactly how this is a good use of taxpayer money that somehow serves the national interest again?

He said the statement by Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) advisor Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim that Chin Peng should be allowed to return, because of the permission granted by the government to several members of the CPM members to return home previously, would only create confusion.

“There can be chaos in the country and the people can become confused if the issue on Chin Peng continues to be played up by opposition leaders to gain sympathy although the people have rejected Chin Peng’s intention to return,” he said.

O_o

Who the hell does this guy think he is? This reminds me of that idiot civil servant in the Perak state assembly who suddenly got it into his head that he was God and had the right to decide who’s in and who’s out.

The civil service is a noble profession. It should not be sullied by people who do not understand that civil servants are supposed to be neutral, and serve the government as well as the rakyat - *not* to be some running dog that serves the political interests of the ruling party.
