PUTRJAYA, April 28 (Bernama) -- Former MIC members re-admitted into the party must give priority to unity and work with the leadership, deputy president Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam said Thursday.
He said that loyalty to the party struggle and the leadership line-up would help to stabilise the MIC and win the trust of the Indian community.
Three members sacked by former MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu -- former deputy youth chief V. Mugilan, former Central Working Committee member K.P. Samy and G. Kumar Aman -- submitted their membership applications to Disciplinary Committee chairman Tan KS Nijhar at the party headquarters Thursday.
This followed the decision of the CWC on April 23 for the party to open its doors to nine members who had been sacked or had left on their own accord since March 2008.
Subramaniam, who is Human Resources Minister, said the "open door" policy under the new president, Senator Datuk G. Palanivel, would strengthen the party especially in the present climate of anticipation, with the 13th general election expected to be called "at any time".
Asked to comment on a news portal report that he did not support the motion to re-admit sacked members, he said that he had opposed it only from the constitutional point of view.
The MIC constitution stipulates that sacked members may apply to rejoin the party only two years after their expulsion.
Subramaniam said: I and Datuk Palanivel did not support the motion. Because the majority of the CWC members supported the motion, we accepted the decision."
Meanwhile, MIC vice-president Datuk SK Devamani urged all party members to respect the CWC decision.
"The CWC has made a decision and the decision is final. So all (MIC members) must respect the decision and not question it," he said.
"What is important is for us to be united again, to stabilise the party and work for the Indian community which expects service and good deeds from us."
