SEMPORNA, Dec 7 (Bernama) -- The people's preference is expected to be among the major criteria in choosing the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate in the coming general election, Umno Vice-President Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said.
The Rural and Regional Development Minister said it was one of the factors emphasised on by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak at the BN Convention on Sunday.
"The kind of candidate we need to bring forward is one that can serve and be accepted by the people, not because the candidate is our friend or supporter; that is not the deciding factor.
"We will not choose a candidate only to lose later, but instead we will select someone capable from among thousands of BN members," he said.
Shafie was speaking to reporters after launching a mass circumcision programme jointly organised by the Semporna Umno division and the Semporna branch of the Sabah Islamic Medical Welfare Association, Tuesday.
Shafie is confident that if these changes can be made within the BN, it will strengthen the people's trust and support for the party to lead the country.
He said the candidate's factor was emphasised on by the BN leadership in choosing candidates in several by-elections such as in Galas, Kelantan and Batu Sapi, Sabah.
He also reminded that in order to win the hearts of the community, BN members needed to adopt a humble attitude and avoid being arrogant.
