Peaceful rally to take Selangor water woes to King

KLANG: The rally planned for today to submit a memorandum to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong is aimed at getting His Majesty’s attention on the Selangor water issue, Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim’s political secretary Faekah Husin said.

She said this was in accordance with the King’s role as benefactor and protector of the citizens.

“It is aimed at ensuring that the people are not sidelined in the water issue, especially when they are facing difficulties due to the high cost of living,” said Faekah yesterday in a statement.

The rally, which is expected to draw 10,000 people, is aimed at seeking the King’s intervention to settle Selangor’s water industry dispute with water concessionaire Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (Syabas) and the Federal Government.

Participants are scheduled to march from the National Mosque to Istana Negara at noon to hand over the memorandum to the King.

Faekah said the rally would be peaceful and hoped the police handles the situation professionally during the gathering and march.

All the leaders attending the gathering would co-operate with the authorities to ensure that everything went on smoothly, she said.

Selangor Water Review Panel member Charles Santiago said submitting the memorandum to the King was a last resort.

The discussions between the state government, Syabas and the Federal Government over the last two years had broken down, he said.

Meanwhile, former PKR supreme council member Badrul Hisham Shaharin, popularly refered to as “Chegubard”, wrote in his blog that the state government had already informed palace officials about the rally.

It is also believed that members of the Selangor Anti-Irregularities Federation (GAPS) would also stage a rally against the state government over allegations of bad management of state funds.

Meanwhile, city police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Zulkifli Abdullah said the rallies planned for today were illegal as no permits were issued.

He said police had received information that two groups would demonstrate – one at Dataran Merdeka and the other at the National Mosque.
