PKR drama 'replay of Anwar-Ghafar' saga

By FMT Staff

KUALA LUMPUR: The current drama in PKR is reminiscent of a "tactic" Anwar Ibrahim used with former deputy prime minister Ghafar Baba, said ex-PKR information chief Ruslan Kassim.

According to him, the current scenario was Anwar's way of "officially clearing" the path for deputy presidential candidate Azmin Ali, who incidentally has been with him since the "old days", and handing him a "free win".

"This is how Anwar works... his strategy and tactic is the same from his old days when he fought off Ghafar (Baba)... now he's using his golden boy," he said, adding that PKR's real face was now emerging.

"Now we see the real PKR... before it accused Umno of being unjust, undemocratic, not transparent... now it's hitting back at its own nose," he said.

Ruslan was responding to PKR supreme council member Zaid Ibrahim's abrupt exit from the deputy presidential race on Monday in protest of alleged election fraud and malpractice. He also announced his resignation from all his party positions with immediate effect.

Yesterday, Zaid in a joint press conference with third candidate Mustaffa Kamil Ayub, called for Anwar to step down and for Azmin to be disqualified.

Responding to Zaid's call, Ruslan said: "Anwar will never quit his seat until he achieves his dream of wresting Putajaya... hills don't crumble, so don't hope for Anwar to withdraw."

Equating Zaid's call to Anwar as “barking at a hill”, Ruslan said that Anwar "uses people to achieve his personal ambitions including leaders of DAP and PAS. If he can cheat the world to get to Putrajaya, what more Zaid."

More trouble ahead

Meanwhile, Umno Women information chief Hamidah Osman said what was happening in PKR was “expected”.

"Although PKR has its own leadership lines, they are all powerless including the party president. The most powerful is the party adviser.

"As such, there is no way that Anwar will allow his golden boy (Azmin) to lose the election although he has said that he will not interfere.

"The party will be riddled with problems, mark my words... more so once Azmin is anointed.

"Azmin will definitely have his own lineup to ensure he remains in power and he will throw out the rest.

"Remember what happened in Selangor when Azmin interfered in the administration because he couldn't see eye to eye with Menteri Besar Khalid (Ibrahim)," she told MediaUmno.

Hamidah said Zaid's resignation was the begining of a chaotic time for PKR, considering the 13th general election is not too far off.
