Don't let Najib down, Samy urges govt agencies

By G Vinod - Free Malaysia Today,

KUALA LUMPUR: MIC president S Samy Vellu today appealed to government agencies to work together with Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak in his efforts to uplift the Indian community.

The party's long-serving president said that the prime minister had taken great efforts to reach out to the community and it should be supported by all government agencies.

“Before 2008, the Indians had always voted for BN but the government failed to look into the community's plight," he said at a press conference at the party headquarters today,

“Unlike previous prime ministers, Najib had reached out to all communities since helming the premiership and now people can voice out their views directly to him,” Samy Vellu said.

He added that the community's support is moving back to the ruling coalition, but cautioned that the Indians may sway again if government agencies do not work together with the premier.

“If government agencies do not support the prime minister's efforts, then we will be back to square one,” he said.

Since taking over the premiership in March 2009, Najib had gone to great lengths to reach out to the disenchanted community after the infamous Hindraf gathering in November 2007 which saw supporters of BN swinging to the opposition for the first time since the nation's independence.

Among the initiatves taken by Najib was the announcement in July that students who score well in SPM examinations will be entitled to Public Service Department scholarships irrespective of race, and the facelift and rebranding of Brickfields to “Little India”.
