Prosecution Not Best Solution To Ensure Children Take Care Of Aged Parents - Najib

KUALA LUMPUR, July 13 (Bernama) -- Prosecution is not the best solution to ensure that children take care of their aged parents, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said Tuesday.

He said the government was of the view that this would only lead to other social implications, such as tension in the relationship between parents and children, and result in undesirable consequences for the generations to come.

"Family ties in Malaysian society are still strong. It is generally seen that children still respect and love their parents and are prepared to discharge their responsibilities in taking care of their parents in their old age.

"As such, the government prefers to use the positive approach in the effort to enhance family ties and foster closer relations between the younger generation and senior citizens," he said in a written reply to Karpal Singh (DAP-Bukit Gelugor) in the Dewan Rakyat.

Karpal Singh had wanted to know whether the government was prepared to initiate legislation providing for the mandatory maintenance of aged parents by their children who were gainfully employed.

Najib said that for senior citizens who were weak, poor and without heirs, the government strived to provide various kinds of support, including aid for the elderly at RM300.

Aid of RM300 a month was also provided to the guardian of the handicapped or the bed-ridden who earned less than RM3,000 a month, as well care at welfare institutions and voluntary welfare bodies nationwide, he said.
