Municipal Councillors Told To Solve Public Grievances

KUCHING, Jan 12 (Bernama) -- As grassroots leaders, municipal councillors should go down to the ground to hear the people's grievances and solve them, said Sarawak Environment and Public Health Minister Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh.

He said those, who were appointed by Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties, were "frontliners" to the government in ensuring that policies formulated and decisions made were correct and relevant.

"Your appointment as councillors is a good training ground if you aspire to become people elected representatives," he said at the swearing-in ceremony of Padawan Municipal Council councillors at Kota Padawan near here on Tuesday.

Tan Joo Phoi, who is also Batu Kawah assemblyman, was reappointed as MPP chairman.

Wong said MPP was allocated RM2.31 million by the Housing and Local Government Ministry and RM9.46 million by the state government this year.

Earlier, Tan said MPP's revenue fell by one per cent to RM16.53 million last year while a federal aid totalling RM698,490 was distributed to 418 poor families last year.
