Anwar’s former aide gives statement to MACC

PUTRAJAYA: The former political secretary to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim gave his statement to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) regarding the acquisition of documents relating to alleged share transactions made by PKR vice-president Azmin Ali.

Anuar Shaari, who was Anwar’s aide when he was Deputy Prime Minister, was quizzed for at least two hours by an MACC officer and his assistant at 2.30pm on Wednesday.

Anuar said the officer asked at least 10 questions regarding the documents, which were handed over to the MACC by the police following a report lodged by Anuar on Nov 17 claiming that he had documents showing that Azmin had shares worth some RM2mil in the early 1990s.

Anuar claimed that the share transaction made by Azmin, his wife and several relatives would be worth about RM10mil inclusive of its processing.

“I have given my full cooperation to the MACC. I informed the MACC that I have no intention of judging anyone but would leave to the authorities to carry out a fair and transparent investigation,” he told reporters after giving his statements to the MACC.

He called on the MACC to investigate the validity and authenticity of the documents to determine the direction of further investigations.

When pressed further about the questions, Anuar said most of them concerned how he had obtained the documents and whether he was sure that it was relating to share transactions.

He declined to disclose further details.

On Azmin threatening to sue him over the allegations, Anuar said it was up to the PKR vice-president to do so as Malaysia was a democratic country.

He added that he only wished to remind Azmin to give his full cooperation to the relevant authorities if he wished to uphold justice.

“If he is called up by any relevant authorities and if there are court proceedings, he should turn up and not take every opportunity to postpone the case,” said Anuar, who was Anwar’s political secretary between 1996 and 1998.

Anuar, who joined PKR in 1999 after Anwar was sacked from the Government, left the opposition party on March 27,2007.
