KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 17 (Bernama) -- Umno Youth has described a statement from the Conference of Rulers in defence of the social contract, as a show of love and concern of the Malay Rulers for the people.

It also reflects the Rulers' concern to preserve racial harmony while ensuring the position of Islam and the constitutional monarchy system were respected, said Umno Youth chief Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein.

"The stand is long awaited and I am confident that the institution of the Malay Rulers as the sovereign of the country, not only protects the Malays but also the people as a whole.

"I call on all quarters to take a serious view of the reminder from the Rulers by not questioning the primary basis of the formation and prosperity of Malaysia," he said in a statement Friday.

Hishammuddin said no one should question matters enshrined in the Federal Constitution on the Malay Rulers, the Malay and Bumiputera rights, the position of Islam as the official religion and the Malay language as the national language.

Muslim Consumers Association of Malaysia secretary-general Datuk Ma'amor Osman said the Rulers had played their role and used their power by issuing the statement.

"Matters stipulated in the social contract should not be questioned by any party as they have become the concrete foundation in the formation of the country," he said.

Malaysia Youth Council secretary-general Tajudin Ahmad urged the government to take stern action against certain quarters who tried to disrupt racial harmony by questioning the constitution.
