Manikavasagam to keep PKR post

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 30 - MP for Kapar S. Manikavasagam will not relinquish his post as Selangor PKR liaison deputy chief after all, his political secretary M. Shanmugam said today.

Manikavasagam had, yesterday, threatened to quit if no action was taken against those responsible for the demolition of a Hindu temple in Ampang.

Yesterday, the state government suspended Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) deputy president Hamid Hussain for a week over the issue.

"Manikavasagam will retain his post as PKR deputy liaison chief for Selangor following the suspension of the person behind the demolition," Shanmugam said yesterday.

State local government, research and study committee chairperson Ronnie Liu said yesterday that Hamid would be suspended pending investigations into the demolition.

He said the state government viewed the demolition of places of worship very seriously and would get to the bottom of the matter soon.

Hamid is alleged to have instructed the demolition of the 19-year-old temple near Kampung Tasek Tambahan two weeks ago.

The three-member committee on non-Muslim religious affairs, comprising Teresa Kok, Dr Xavier Jayakumar and Liu, has begun its investigations.

Shanmugam said Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, political secretary to the Selangor MB, had promised stern action against those responsible for the demolition.
