PUTRAJAYA, Jan 24 (Bernama) -- The Home Ministry through the National Registration Department (NRD) has set a one year maximum period for processing citizenship applications.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said previously there was no official time limit set for such applications.
"A time limit for applications involving citizenship, entry permits or late registration of births, did not exist in the past but now we have set a one year period as a guideline now.
"We want the applicants to know whether their application was approved or not during such period," he said at his ministry's 2009, 2010 Key Performance Index (KPI) achievement ceremony here Monday.
Hishammuddin said the initiative was to avoid a backlog of unresolved applications that have taken a long time, some that has even taken up to 10 years before a decision was made.
"It must be said that we are taking the initiative without compromising the aspects of safety and terms contained in the law of the country," he said.
Hishammuddin said over the past two years, the Home Ministry had processed 219,485 applications comprising 62,604 applications for citizenship, entry permit appeal (18,162) and late registration of births (138,719).
He added that the backlog had been cleared while those currently being processed are all applications received this year.
