Cops probe 'slipper for Najib' protester

Police have wrapped up their investigation on a protester who held a slipper against a poster of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak during a protest outside Parliament last week.

Sentul district police chief R Munusamy told Malaysiakini that the man was arrested last Saturday and released on police bail the same day.

He said the man was investigated under Section 504 and 506 of the Penal Code.

Section 504 concerns intentional insult with the intent to provoke a breach of the peace while Section 506 is related to criminal intimidation.

Munusamy said the investigation papers have been handed over to the Attorney-General's Chambers for further action.

Then man was photographed placing his slipper against the poster during the protest against fuel subsidy cuts and the goods and services tax (GST) on Oct 8.

The photograph was circulated online, including by the Facebook page Friends of Barisan Nasional.

The pro-government group also released the man's address alongside his name and picture on their Facebook page which drew a slew of responses from the public.

Some attempted to defend him, while others criticised his action as being rude.

"It was just a picture, not the real face also," wrote Muhd Hanzalah.

"Imagine if it was your family (member's) face, won't you be angry?" stated E-kin Mansor.

"So many people are scolding this uncle… It is just a picture not something that is alive or worth it, relax lah. This PM issue over 20 sen, who won't be angry and feel irritated when the cost of living is high," penned Diane Jaa.

"What he did is wrong… talk about his attitude, why bring racialism into it… please stop this attitude and rethink 1Malaysia," argued Thulasidevi Ramachandran Devi.

Islamic State calls for terrorist attacks in Australia

Mark Schliebs | The Australian

ISLAMIC State has named Australia as one of five main targets for terrorist attacks, calling for “stab the crusader” to be a “battle cry” for its supporters around the world.

Video link : http://www.theaustralian.com.au/video/id-RsZ2MycTpnCK0kWleD7d7zBOGBm5T26J/Apparent-Strikes-Hit-Islamic-State-Targets-Near-Kobani

The group released the latest edition of Dabiq — its official magazine — early this morning, which featured calls for worldwide action against the “crusaders”, as it has dubbed the US-led coalition committed to tackling Islamic State through military action.

The release of the magazine followed last month’s speech by the group’s official spokesman, Abu Muhammad al-Adnani, in which the first public calls for attacks in specific countries were made.

All terrorist attacks should clearly be attributable to “patrons” of Islamic State so they cannot be described by media as “random killings”, the new article said.

“It is very important that attacks take place in every country that has entered into the alliance against the Islamic State, especially the US, UK, France, Australia and Germany,” an article in the magazine said.

“Every Muslim should get out of his house, find a crusader, and kill him.

“It is important that the killing becomes attributed to patrons of the Islamic State who have obeyed its leadership ... otherwise, crusader media makes such attacks appear to be random killings.”

The article contained warnings not to include too many people in the planning of the attack, and to not over-analyse plans to the point they are aborted.

Secrecy should be followed when planning and executing any attack. The smaller the numbers of those involved and the less the discussion beforehand, the more likely it will be carried out without problems,” it said.

“One should not complicate the attacks by involving other parties, purchasing complex materials, or communicating with weak-hearted individuals.

“‘Rely upon Allah and stab the crusader’ should be the battle cry for all Islamic State patrons.”

The group also admitted to “enslaving” women and children from the Iraq-based religious group, the Yazidis, in another article.

The targeting of the Yazidis helped spur US president Barack Obama to plan military action against the Islamic State, which controls large swathes of Syria and Iraq.

Witnesses Describe Jihadist Horror in Kobane, as ISIS Justifies Enslaving Yazidis

Terrified Kobane residents have spoken of the horror inflicted on them by jihadist fighters belonging to the self-proclaimed Islamic State. Some of the atrocities include beheadings, amputations, eye gouging and the complete destruction of livestock, with refugees now flooding across the border to seek help in Turkey.

by Nick Hallett

One farmer, Ahmed Bakki, said that while everyone fled as ISIS advanced, his cousin decided to stay behind. He told the Daily Mail that when he phoned his cousin a jihadist answered and said: "We've got his head, and we're taking it to Jarabulus [an IS stronghold]."

Mr Bakki spoke of more beheadings by the group: "An English teacher in our village tried to reason with them, but they just called him a kaffir [non-believer] and tied him to their car and dragged him away. We heard they beheaded him later.

"My neighbour was beheaded because they said he was 'delivering vegetables to the kaffir'. They burned his farm, livestock, even his bees – they destroyed everything."

Mr Bakki identified the nationalities of some of the fighters involved and, worryingly for the British government, some of them appear to be from the UK. "They are Chechen, they are English, they are from all over Europe. We know because we can hear their accents," he said.

Another refugee, a 13-year-old schoolboy called Dillyar, spoke of witnessing the brutal murder of his cousin. "They pushed him to the ground and sawed his head off, shouting 'Allahu Akbar'. I see it in my dreams every night and every morning I wake up and remember everything."

Many spoke of headless corpses now littering the streets of Kobane, with other townsfolk having their eyes gouged out.

Amin Fajar said: "I have seen tens, maybe hundreds, of bodies with their heads cut off. Others with just their hands or legs missing.

"I have seen faces with their eyes or tongues cut out – I can never forget it for as long as I live. They put the heads on display to scare us all."

In the most recent edition of their propaganda magazine Dabiq, Islamic State jihadists try to justify their brutal behaviour, saying it is within Sharia law.

One article on the fate of captured Yazidis says: "the Yazidi women and children were then divided according to the Shariah amongst the fighters of the Islamic State who participated in the Sinjar operations.

RT reports that the article also uses extensive theological arguments to justify slavery, adding: "The enslaved Yazidi families are now sold by the Islamic State soldiers."

The magazine goes on to threaten to bring Jihad to Europe, quoting Shaykh Abu Mahamed al-Adnani as saying: "We will conquer your Rome, break your crosses, and enslave your women, by the permission of Allah, the Exalted."

ISIS magazine shows its flag flying over Vatican

(ANSA) - Vatican City, October 13 - The black flag of Islamic militant group ISIS is shown flying above St. Peter's Square on the cover of the group's magazine Dabiq, which called in its latest issue for a war against the Catholic Church.

With the headline The Failed Crusade, the photo-shopped cover of Dabiq caps new threats against Rome and the Vatican as well as forces led by the United States in a bombing campaign in Iraq and Syria against ISIS militants.

It threatens to "conquer" Rome and "break your crosses," referring to the symbol of Christianity.

The group has previously suggested that the fight is about religion and western forces are attacking the Islamic faith rather than the militants - a modern version of the medieval Crusades that pitted the Roman Catholic Christians of the day against Islam. The article in Dabiq - named for a town in northern Syria - also urged faithful Muslims to attack and kill "every Crusader possible" and added that "it is lawful to kidnap the women of the infidels and use them as sex slaves".

Last month, security officials said that they had stepped up security at the Vatican following threats by ISIS, which wants to establish an Islamic Caliphate. This marked the fourth issue of Dabiq, which is published in English.

Social media users up in arms over Najib’s call to Chinese

The tone of Najib's speech at the MCA general assembly asking the Chinese not to demand for things if they were not going to vote Barisan Nasional, has not gone down well with Malaysians online. - The Malaysian Insider pic by Najjua Zulkefli, October 12, 2014.News reports of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak telling the Chinese community not to make demands if they were not with Barisan Nasional (BN) have spread like wildfire on social media networks.

Many social media users were critical of his statement, with some expressing disbelief that the prime minister had made such a remark while others blasted Najib for not living up to his 1Malaysia slogan.

Twitter user Julian Tan Kok Ping tweeted: "I dun (don't) believe I am reading this. PM 'Don’t make demands if you don’t support BN, Najib tells Chinese'."

"...Is it true? Hv u (have you) been fair?" another Twitter user Alvin Ting wrote while Republic of Sarawak tweeted: "Umno/BN never been fair to anyone except the elites: Don’t make demands if you don’t support BN, Najib tells Chinese."

Sarawak Update posted a sarcastic tweet, highlighting the fact that East Malaysians have long supported BN but their states still did not enjoy rapid development.

"Support Ah Jib gor (Najib) and make demands? Become fix deposit. You will b (be) blessed with primitive road like Sabah & Sarawak," Sarawak Update tweeted.

Christina Yong, meanwhile, tweeted: "Don't ask Chinese to pay tax please!" This is echoed by Steven W. Chong, who wrote: "...And if I didn't vote for you then don't ask me to pay income tax or any kind of tax how?!"

"... but you haven't done enough" CitizenSugarKane tweeted.

Hi, its me! (@kcl1308) posted an angry tweet that read: "Go to hell. I still won't support corruption."

Sasindran Chelliah wrote: "The true colours of "1Malaysia" Leader!!!!!" while Iqra' tweeted: "The Malays in (and) Indians in PR how? Gomen ckp mcm ni? (the government talks like this)?"

Another Twitter user, Siemens (@siemensyee), tweeted: "Come on let's move beyond race-based politics."

Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim also criticised Najib over the statement. He tweeted: "Masih terus dgn nada angkuh (still going on with an arrogant tone)..."

Selangor DAP chairman and Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua also took a dig at Najib on Facebook, saying: “This is the "I am the Prime Minister for all Malaysians’. Since we didn't support the BN Government and Najib doesn't want to listen to us, maybe he should not collect taxes from us too?"

Najib said at the MCA’s 61st annual general assembly today that BN would be fair to the Chinese if they supported the ruling coalition instead of Pakatan Rakyat.

“I’d like to do more, maybe one day I can do more. But I also need the Chinese community to support BN. Come on. You have to do your part."

“You can’t demand and then support DAP. You can’t demand and then support PR. You demand, you support BN, we will be fair to the Chinese,” said Najib.

The Malaysian Insider readers also fumed over his statement, as they posted angry and critical comments on the news portal's website.

Going_bananas wrote: "Well, thanks for admitting that BN has not been fair to the Chinese. Mr PM, please know your place.

"You are supposedly the PM of a nation made out of diverse ethicities. You are supposed to be fair to all and not to your supporters only. If BN performs well across the board, why should it not regain the trust of the Chinese?

"Isn't this the way you should win support? By speaking without engaging your thoughts like this will only encourage the likes of Ibrahim Ali to be bolder in attacking the non-Malays. Come on, Mr. PM. Grow up."

Another reader D1_Only commented: "Is this for real, Najib? I thought we live in a democratic country?" while beyondthefence posted: "I think it should be don't expect Chinese to support BN if BN don't buck up."

NOTSTUPIDMALAY described the statement as “ridiculous coming from a prime minister who has shown that he was not suitable to be a statesman”.

"Is Najib suggesting that Malaysians living and workng in states governed by Pakatan Rakyat should not and are not entitled to demand for development, good governance?" the reader posted.

rareguy65 commented: "Ahhhyooooooooo! For a PM to use this type of language.. OMG! OMG! OMG!" while I_LUV_ABU wrote that speeches like Najib's would turn more Chinese votes against BN now.

"With speeches like this you can rest assured that they will continue to support the opposition.....and in even greater numbers Nobody likes to be threatened......is this an example of your supposedly wonderful negotiating skills."

lbhwong questioned the logic behind Najib's remark, saying that the people made demands out of their love for the nation.

"...we demand because we love this country, we reject corruption, we reject cronyism, we reject slogan of 1Malaysia, we reject to be treated unfairly, we reject to be called pendatang (immigrants), Is it wrong, Mr PM? We are paying taxes yearly, is it too much to ask to have a better government?"

Another reader tanahairkumalaysia posted: "It is NOT our obligation to support you blindly...It is YOUR job to come up with sound government policies for us to give you our votes!!"

fromthebox asked Najib which he preferred – demands that could give BN the chance to improve and regain support, or no demands at all, which showed that the people saw no more hope in the coalition. – October 12, 2014.

Anti-Sedition Act group more determined after attack at Speakers Square

Ong (in yellow t-shirt) being escorted out with the help of GHAH supporters after the mob seen in the background started getting more aggresive as the police only looked on. - The Malaysian Insider pic by Hasnoor Hussain, October 13, 2014.A day after their peaceful gathering, to voice opposition to the Sedition Act 1948 was rudely disrupted, members of the Gerakan Hapus Akta Hasutan (GHAH) are now more determined to pursue their cause.

The group's Penang coordinator Ong Jing Cheng said the members were deliberating and would meet to decide on the course of action to take following the incident at the Speakers Square in George Town yesterday.

He said that GHAH was now more encouraged to see through its agenda and campaign to have the Act repealed.

It is also preparing a coach to transport Penangites who are interested in lending support to the Bar Council's march to oppose the Sedition Act in Kuala Lumpur on October 16, he said.

Ong's speech was cut short yesterday as a mob, some of whom wore t-shirts that displayed support for the Sedition Act, heckled and pushed him after the event started at about 6pm.

The mob claimed to belonged to a coalition of NGOs, which includes Perkasa, calling themselves Persatuan Gabungan Melayu Islam Pulau Pinang.

GHAH is supported by 128 bodies, including Suaram, Lawyers for Liberty, Amnesty International Malaysia, Aliran and Pertubuhan Ikram Malaysia.

In a statement yesterday, GHAH described the incident as yet another demonstration of "premeditated and organised attacks" against demands for broadening of democratic rights and freedoms.

It said it would persist with its focus to repeal the Sedition Act, while also demanding that all charges under the Act to be dropped and those convicted be released, and that there be no replacement legislation of similar draconian provisions.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng described the mob's conduct as dangerous and called for police action against the perpetrators.

He condemned the aggressive behaviour and abusive language used by the group.

Calling them "Umno hooligans", he berated them for chasing away people who were only the giving their views on opposing a piece of legislation in a public sphere like Speakers Square.

Lim noted that besides members of Suaram and other NGOs, the gathering was also attended by former Penang state executive councillor Datuk Dr Toh Kin Woon, who is the north peninsular vice-chairman for the electoral reform group Bersih.

"There was derogatory and racist language used, like 'babi' (pigs) and 'Jews'," he said at a press conference in his office today. “I feel that is very dangerous and coarse.”

"It was not only rude and insolent, but they also broke the law.” he said.

"We hope the police can seriously take heed of the incident and take appropriate action."

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had in July 2012 announced the repeal of the Sedition Act 1948.

However, since the 13th general election in May last year, there has been a slew of people targetted under the Act. – October 13, 2014.

Ibrahim: Bible-burning call only for Muslim parents

Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali has defended his statement calling on Muslims to burn the Bible, by saying that it was only directed to Muslim parents whose children were allegedly given the holy book.

"When a reporter asked me of Perkasa's stand (on the alleged Bible distribution at a school in Penang), I suggested that move (to seize and burn the Bible) so that the children will not be confused and their faith undermined.

"I was only referring to the Bahasa Malaysia bible which has the word 'Allah' in it, which was distributed at the school. I was not referring to all bibles," he was quoted as saying by Utusan Malaysia today.

Ibrahim was reported to have made that statement at a press conference in Penang last year, following claims that the Bahasa Malaysia bible was distributed students, including Muslim students, at a school.

Last week, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nancy Shukri (right) in a parliamentary reply said that Ibrahim will not be charged for his remark as he did not mean to cause religious harmony and was defending the sanctity of Islam.

Following outrage over her reply, the de-facto law minister issued a press statement saying that Ibrahim's statement is in line with Article 11 of the Federal Constitution which bars proselytisation of Muslims.

She also took to Twitter to claim that she never said that Ibrahim was not prosecuted because he was defending Islam.

'Teach Chinese youths to be patriotic'

Instead of treading on the sensitive issue of power sharing, an Umno leader has urged MCA Youth to focus on inculcating patriotism among the younger generation of Chinese Malaysians.

Syed Ali Alhabshee referred to how Chinese youths purportedly used the social media to hurl criticisms at the nation's leaders and Islam.

"MCA Youth must concentrate on attracting the support of Chinese youths for BN, they must increase the number of civic-based programmes for the youths, especially to be more patriotic to their motherland.

"Nowadays, many Chinese youths use the social media to criticise the prime minister, leaders and Islam which is the official religion of this country," he said.

The Cheras Umno division chief was responding to MCA Youth chief Chong Sin Woon's speech at the wing's annual meet which sought a review of the power sharing formula.

Urging MCA Youth to refrain from "talking about things which should not be done", Syed Ali told the wing to look ahead on how to appreciate the spirit of loving this nation.

"Power sharing does not only involve the interests of the Chinese but also others such as Indians, Iban, Kadazan and Murut who are treated equally and fairly by BN," he added.

He said Chong should devise methods to win back Chinese support for BN and not attempt to be a communal hero by raising sensitive issues which make others think that the MCA Youth chief is echoing the call of DAP for a "Malaysian Malaysia".

Syed Ali noted that the power sharing formula practiced by BN has solidified unity, where none of the races are sidelined and all can reap the fruits of mainstream development.

"Through this power sharing formula, the Chinese were successful in garnering economic opportunities without jealously from other races," he added.

'Don't be a thorn in the flesh'

As for MCA, the Umno leader said the party should not to be a thorn in the flesh for BN and its leaders must stop behaving like DAP when it concerns racial issues.

Syed Ali also commended Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak for hitting the nail on the head during his speech at the MCA annual meet yesterday.

"MCA must not ask for things to the point of making Umno members anxious.

"What the PM said about the Chinese community's perception of playing charades and being a thorn in the flesh have been tracked since the last two general elections," he said.

He also castigated MCA leaders for only showing their faces at Umno and BN programmes without putting forth programmes for their community.

Furthermore, he claimed that a handful of MCA leaders speak as if they were DAP members when touching on issues of race.

He said this must be avoided to prevent Umno members misunderstanding and concluding that MCA is only working for its self interest without making attempts to bring back Chinese voters into the BN fold.

"MCA leaders should not only show their faces at Umno and BN programmes but also work towards winning the hearts and defending the Chinese in this country

"GE14 will take place in a few years but what I observed during the recent Pengkalan Kubor by-election, MCA did not seem to work hard enough in courting Chinese voters," he added.

Syed Ali said MCA cannot be forever relying on Umno's campaign and efforts to ensure that its candidates win in the elections.

The Umno leader also said that under Najib, the government has never sidelined the interests of any races, including that of the Chinese.

Whenever there are general elections or by-elections, he said the BN government would attempt to realise the community's demands.

"Unfortunately, when the decisions (on the demands) are announced, the Chinese will vote Pakatan Rakyat.

"MCA must be honest and genuine in its struggle with BN. What the PM said yesterday has basis. BN needs for support from the Chinese community...," he added.

Over 11,000 petition to drop Isma chief's charge

Faced with sedition charges, Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) president Abdullah Zaik Abdul Rahman can find comfort in the fact that thousands want him off the hook.

As at 6.25pm today, the e-petition started by Isma on Oct 2 has garnered 11,050 signatures.

This comes as the much anticipated trial against Abdullah Zaik was postponed today to Dec 22, pending the constitutional challenge against the Sedition Act by law lecturer Azmi Sharom.

According to the petition, Abdullah Zaik is a "scapegoat" and was merely for defending Islam, Malays and the royal institution.

It adds that Abdullah Zaik (right) was "warning" those who are "insolent" for questioning the position of Islam, Malays and the royal institution.

"(He also) reminded them of the historical facts on the position of Malays and the newcomers before and during the formation of an independent Malaysia.

"As a result, the Isma president has been the target of attacks by evangelist and chauvinists, to the extent of being charged under the Sedition Act," the petition reads.

Solidarity campaign

The petition is just one part of Isma’s campaign in support of its president.

Earlier, the vocal NGO launched a YouTube video urging all Malays to attend the trial in support of Islam, Malays and the royal institution.

Isma also urged supporters to change their social media avatars with a picture of Abdullah Zaik with the caption: "We are all Abdullah Zaik."

Its international chapters, mostly consisting of students, have also launched Youtube videos in solidarity with Abdullah Zaik.

Meanwhile, the petition also questions DAP’s stand on the Sedition Act, having called for its abolition, but at the same time lodging police reports which led to Abdullah Zaik’s charging.

"Ironically, there are many seditious statements on the position of Islam, Malays and the royal institution which have not been prosecuted until today," it reads.

Abdullah Zaik is charged with making seditious remarks, when he said that Malaysian Chinese are "intruders".

'Rosmah didn't get a single sen from Permata'

Deputy Finance Minister Ahmad Maslan has dismissed the accusation that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's wife Rosmah Mansor benefitted from the allocation for the Permata national programme (Permata) under Budget 2015.

He explained that Permata did not receive RM711 million as alleged but only a portion of the allocation as the sum was also shared by the Education Ministry, as well as the Kemas and Perpaduan pre-schools.

"Rosmah did not get a single sen from Permata.

"The (allegation) RM711 million is inaccurate as it was given for the entire pre-school education," Ahmad (left) told reporters at the Parliament lobby.

PKR's online news portal Keadilan Daily yesterday quoted Wanita PKR vice-chief Haniza Talha as saying that the rakyat’s subsidy should not be cut just so that RM711 million can be allocated to Permata.

Haniza also questioned the Permata programme, saying that the country already has a good education system specifically for pre-schoolers.

Social media users also questioned the high amount of allocation given to Permata, with many saying that it is unfair and immaterial, especially with the rising cost of living.

However, Ahmad said the claims were nothing but slander as Permata had contributed greatly to pre-school education.

“Permata does not belong to Rosmah. There are many groups, such as Permata Pintar for the geniuses, Permata Seni for those gifted in the arts and Permata Insan for those involved in religious teachings.

"These are all good programmes," Ahmad added.

Meanwhile, two Pakatan MPs urged the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) to investigate Permata.

Manivanan Gowindasamy (PKR-Kapar) said the RM711 million for the programme under the budget is not consistent with 82 of its centres of 1,780 students.

He asked whether this is a waste of the people’s money, as it only constitutes 0.074 percent of the total number of children nationwide.

Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff (PAS-Rantau Panjang, right) said that the state-funded traditional religious schools nationwide only received RM25 million.

"We welcome Permata for the good of the country but we do not want a double standard in the education system of our country," said Siti Zailah.

Umno and PAS Members Should Be Reminded of Non-Malay Rights in Malaysia

Over the past week, there have been several issues that have threatened to destabilise the peace and harmony that this country has long fought for.

Vernacular schools

The most recent is the intention by Petaling Jaya Utara Umno division deputy chief Mohamad Azli Mohemed Saad to propose that the fate of vernacular schools should be debated at the upcoming Umno general assembly.

Even worse was the immediate reaction by Cheras Umno division chief Datuk Seri Syed Ali Al Habshee who also supported that vernacular schools should be done away.

As far as I am concerned these statements are absolutely irresponsible and wrong. It seems that Umno’s sudden attack on vernacular schools is just another one of the Malay party’s usual hype that its members create for themselves to flex their “Ketuanan Melayu” (Malay supremacy) muscles to its members.

It is not surprising that each year, before, during and after the Umno General Assembly, that the party will disregard its Barisan Nasional allies such as MCA and MIC by churning such callous statements.

In setting the record straight however, while Umno has its right to champion the cause of the Malays, they also should learn how to respect the rights of non-Malays in the country by not questioning it.

During my stint as the state executive councilor for Selangor, Indian affairs was one of the portfolios that I was tasked to handle.

From my experience in handling Tamil schools in Selangor, I learnt that a large number of Indian professionals have emerged from these schools and are contributing immensely towards nation-building. Many of them sit in the school’s Parent-Teacher Association and donate as much as they can towards the overall improvement of their respective schools.

While 60% of the Indian parents throughout Malaysia choose to enroll their children in Tamil schools because they have lost faith in the national school curriculum.

Tamil schools despite the lack if government assistance is able to produce straight As students consistently and sometimes even higher than national schools.

Besides Tamil schools unlike Bumiputera-only institutions such as MARA and UiTM allows all races to enroll in them, fostering national spirit and unity.

Why in this case Umno not scrutinise the effectiveness of national schools in nurturing national unity instead?

Is it because it is something under their purview which has failed and that the Minister of Education Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin who is also Umno deputy president is unable to answer the public?

When addressing the lack of English speaking talent within the high levels of civil service, I wonder as to why the Federal government makes no effort to establish English-medium schools in particular areas such as rural locations to address that issue as well?

By establishing such schools, won’t we will be able to give our children a brighter future and greater accessibility to the world.

It is only better if the ruling government sets out to provide more opportunities to our children instead of considering the removal of vernacular schools.

Oktoberfest

Another issue which crept up recently was when PAS called on the authorities to immediately stop Carlsberg Malaysia’s Oktoberfest Beer Festival as its large-scale promotions could challenge the sensitivities of the Muslim community.

Quoting PAS’ Temerloh MP Nasrudin Hassan, the festival should be banned by all authorities — federal, state and local governments as it is deemed to insult Muslims.

While Umno paper Utusan Malaysia also quoted Selangor Umno chief Datuk Seri Noh Omar calling Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali to remove the billboard which publicised the festival immediately as it appeared to have the consent of Muslims in the area to join the beer festival.

The fact is alcohol has never been a major problem for Muslims, and no organisations would dare invite or promote Muslims to consume alcohol at all times not just Oktoberfest.

As such how can Muslims who profess their faith be attracted to such billboards and feel threatened by it?

As a Malaysian and a non-Muslim, all of us are taught to respect and consider the sensitivities of Malay and Muslim community.

However why is the sensitivities and affairs of non-Muslims often scrutinised and breached? Isn’t it clear in the Federal Constitution as to the rights of non-Muslims as well?

PAS and Umno must also think on larger scale when I talk about sensitivities. If they come up with the fact that they are by far the majority race and religion in the country, they should also consider that Non-Muslim Bumiputeras of Sabah and Sarawak also make up a large number of the population, and that their sensitivities and impression on the current happenings in the Peninsular most certainly would affect them as well.

Perhaps then they would realise that the gap is not big after all.

With that in mind I hope that Umno and some of the PAS members could learn how to compromise and live harmoniously with other race and religions.

It is saddening to see both parties in trying to champion the party’s cause bring up matters that hinges of racial division.

In the time when there is a desperate call for moderation and compromise between all layers of the colourful Malaysian society, I hope that these parties send the correct message to Malaysians in the future.

Sedition Act

The recent haul of many Opposition leaders as part of the Sedition Act dragnet by the Federal government clearly show double-standard practices.

It is sad that not only my brethren in the Pakatan Rakyat coalition such as PKR’s Bagan Serai MP N. Surendran, Pandan MP and PKR vice president Rafizi Ramli, PAS’ Shah Alam MP Khalid Abdul Samad, and DAP’s Cheras MP Teresa Kok to name a few but Universiti Malaya law lecturer Azmi Sharom as well.

We all know that the Sedition Act by its content defined too broadly and is susceptible to abuse.

Worst still it is being used to criminalise almost any kind of democratic speech including legitimate criticisms against the Federal government and authorities.

My question is why as I mentioned them earlier has Mohamad Azli and Syed Ali Al Habshee have not been arrested and investigated by the police for sedition?

There is a clear cut precedent when former Umno MP for Kinabalu Mark Koding was convicted for sedition in 1982 after calling for Chinese and Tamil vernacular schools to be abolished in 1978.

Should the authorities not act upon this immediately?

In August, the racist academician Ridhuan Tee Abdullah in a column published by Sinar Harian warned that Selangor will be known as ‘Selangor Darul Babi’ if the-then Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim is removed from his position.

He made this comment over a proposed pig-farm project which was never approved.

However how can he insult the state of Selangor, its royal institution and the ruler with such insinuation and get away with it ?

Is it because of his often heavy and vitriolic criticisms against non-Muslims which favours the Umno-ruling government ?

As many continue to plead for the law is be abolished, my point here is to not encourage more people to be hauled up under such an abysmal law but to ensure that while it is still enforced, that the government should be fair and just to its people instead of favouring those who support them instead.

Police say IS recruiting our school kids now

Bukit Aman says militant groups recruiting Malaysians 15-30 years old via Facebook.

FMT

KUALA LUMPUR: The effort to recruit Malaysian girls to join militant groups in the name of jihad, is taking an aggressive turn with school children being targeted in the recruitment drive.

Principal assistant director of the Counter Terrorism Division of the Special Branch at Bukit Aman, SAC Ayub Khan Mydin Pitchay, in revealing this said, the individual concerned was actively recruiting this group via Facebook as they were young and easily misled.

“The trend to recruit youngsters between the ages of 15 and 30 through Facebook is worrying. We are aware that some secondary school students have jihadist tendencies and have been persuaded through Facebook.

“Besides school children, students of private and public higher learning institutions with family and educational problems, government and private sector employees and businessmen are also being coaxed to strive together and fight for jihad,” he said when contacted by Bernama here Monday.

Ayob Khan said the three militant groups with Malaysian participation in Syria were the Islamic State (IS), Jabhat Al Nusra and Ajnad Al Sham.

He said that the targeted groups were usually taken in by verses from the holy Quran and fighting alongside the mujahideen.

“At times only part of the Quranic verses are used or verses are misinterpreted to make their objectives legitimate,” he said.

In that context, Ayob Khan said it was now appropriate for religious authorities to take proactive measures in dealing with this matter and ward off these militant groups’ propaganda at once.

In this regard, he said that religious authorities should issue an official fatwa as carried out by several Arab countries including Saudi Arabia which had banned its citizens from helping jihadist fighters in battlefields of other countries especially Syria, as a measure to curb militant recruitment.

“Controlling militant ideology and its breeding is the role of the religious authorities. The police will take action if there is evidence and basis of individuals planning acts of violence,” he said.

Ayob Khan said all parties, especially parents, teachers and employers should be aware of recruitment activities and inform the police should they come across anyone with tendencies to be jihadist fighters in war-torn countries.

He said should the police be informed at an early stage, they would arrange for counseling sessions with religious experts from the Royal Malaysia Police for the individuals involved.

So far 22 Malaysians including three women have been detected to be with militant groups in Syria and 23 others have been detained in the country for alleged links with these groups.

All sedition trials should be put on hold

Gobind Singh says this is because a precedent was set when the sedition trial of Isma's Abdullah Zaik was deferred today.

FMT

PETALING JAYA: All prosecutions under the Sedition Act should be stayed until Azmi Sharom’s constitutional challenge is heard by the High Court.

Gobind Singh Deo MP for Puchong said this must be done as all proceedings would be a nullity in the event Azmi is successful in the High Court.

It was reported today that DPP Mohd Abazafree Mohd Abbas had no objections to the deferment of the sedition trial of Isma’s Abdullah Zaik in the Kajang Sessions Court pending the outcome of Azmi’s application.

“The position should be the same with all trials pending under the Sedition Act. There should be equality and if the Public Prosecutor did not object in this case, there is no reason for other cases involving the same charge to be put to trial either.

“We should also respect the fact that the High Court has been asked to consider the matter and we should wait for that outcome before pushing ahead with prosecutions in other cases.

Azmi’s application has been fixed for hearing on November 5 and 6, 2014.

Six-day school week ‘no go’

Weekend replacement classes worsen rather than improve school students' performance.

FMT

KUALA LUMPUR: Academicians are up-in-arms over running extra classes during the weekends and holidays to replace extended school holidays as this has contributed to poor academic performance.

Earlier this year, the Education Ministry announced that schools were allowed to take six days off for Chinese New Year, nine days for Hari Raya and nine days for Deepavali. This was provided that the holidays were replaced within the school’s academic year.

According to an Oriental Daily report, many academicians have suggested that school replacement classes conducted on days that precede or follow public holidays should coincide with the school holidays or mid-term breaks instead of the weekends.

The Education Ministry is still mulling over the proposal to allow replacement classes to take place during school holidays.

In Ipoh, many schools have opted to extend their Deepavali holidays in exchange for extra replacement classes over the preceding weekends.

This has added to the burden of students as a six-day school week almost all year round has been linked to poorer academic performance.

One academician said: “Although the students get to spend a longer time with their families during these festivals, they have to bear the burden of attending replacement classes over the weekends.

“The issue here is that many students take these replacement classes lightly and due to their week-long schedule in school, most of them do not turn up for classes and this affects their studies.”

He said that in view of the current situation, the best solution for now was to conduct replacement classes during school holidays instead of the weekends.

Activist told to enter defence on sedition charge

Rais and five others are alleged to have made seditious speeches asking for a change of government through unlawful means.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Sessions Court here today ordered activist Hishamuddin Md Rais to enter his defence to a charge of making a seditious speech at a ceramah on May 13, last year.

Judge Azman Mustapha made the order after Deputy Public Prosecutor Azlina Rasdi managed to prove a prima facie case against the accused after four witnesses testified at the hearing.

The court then fixed Nov 13 for Hishamuddin to enter his defence.

At today’s proceedings, lawyer Syahredzan Johan who represented Hishamuddin, 63, told the court that his client would testify under oath from the witness’ stand.

On May 29 last year, Hishamuddin and five other activists were alleged to have made seditious speeches to incite the people of this country to change the legally elected government through unlawful means.

Hishammudin is accused of committing the offence at the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall, Jalan Maharaja Lela, here between 8.55pm and 11.15pm on May 13, last year.

The offence under Section 4(1)(b) of the Sedition Act 1948 is punishable under Section 4(1) of the same Act, which carries a jail term of up to three years or a fine not exceeding RM5,000, or both. – Bernama

Okinawa’s New US Marine Base’s Underwater Nemesis

Written by Mari Takenouchi

The Okinawan dugong is pressed into service to foil the fliers

The long-besieged proposed US Marine base at Henoko on the pristine eastern coast of Okinawa, opposed by at least 75 percent of the island’s residents, has run into another obstacle -- new court decisions protecting the lowly, endangered Okinawan dugong.

The Marines have been trying to build an expanded base on Okinawa for decades. The corps base at Futenma, built at the time of the Japanese defeat in World War II, has been the focal point of a long string of controversies including noise, air pollution, endangerment of public safety, the behavior of troops and the steadily encroaching civilian population. Protesters often gather outside the gates. Even former US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld called the Futenma base the most dangerous of the US’s overseas air facilities.

Since 2003, a lawsuit has been winding its way through the courts to use the protection of the dugong, a sea mammal said by Okinawans rather fancifully to be the “model of mermaids” to stop the construction of the base. It picked up stem on July 31 when the plaintiffs of the Dugong Lawsuit filed additional claims prohibiting access to the adjacent Camp Schwab for reclaiming the Henoko site until the Department of Defense fulfills its duty by engaging related parties in their process of evaluation.

On Aug. 15, the US District Court in San Francisco accepted the plaintiffs’ claim and is now working on their proceedings. Nonetheless, only three days after that, a controversial drilling survey started at Henoko in the midst of outcries of opposing citizens, lending credence to accusations that the Japanese government is trying to create a fait accompli by forcibly going forward with the Henoko reclamation. The Marines intend to reclaim the sea with 21 million cubic meters of soil, equivalent to 3.5 million 10-ton dump truck loads.

However, if the US court rules in favor of the Dugong Lawsuit plaintiffs again, the construction work itself could be suspended. This ruling may come out in the next six months.

In 1997, the Mammalogical Society of Japan estimated the number of Okinawan dugongs at fewer than 50. They are sensitive and swim away as soon as they hear engine noise from boats. In Japan, they are described as a “natural monument” and any impact on their habitat is prohibited.

In 1996, the Japanese and US governments decided to relocate the base to Henoko Bay, which is relatively unpopulated, to seek to reduce the military impact. In 1997, the majority of residents of Nago province, which encompasses the site, voted strongly against the plan. Nonetheless, the mayor accepted the plan, resigned and moved to Tokyo.

That has left the dugong as the bulwark against the construction. Hideki Yoshikawa, the international director of Save the Dugong Campaign Center explains the case as follows. “If we used the US Endangered Species Act, it could have been powerful enough to immediately halt the construction of the Henoko US base since dugongs are endangered species in both countries, but the applicability of the Act on international case was not clear. Meanwhile, NHPA has an international clause that can allow a matter in a foreign country to be tried in a US court.”

In April 2014, the DOD released a document called “US Marine Corps Recommended Findings,” concluding that the construction and operation at Henoko and Oura Bay would have “no adverse effect” on dugongs because of the extremely low probability of dugongs in the area.

However, the Okinawa Defense Bureau (ODB) found dugongs’ feeding traces since June 2009 to May 2013 on the reclamation site itself. The finding has been recognized and documented by the Marine Corps, but the Okinawa defense bureau and the DOD concluded that there would be “no adverse effect on dugongs,” saying that the number of traces are limited.

The plaintiffs complained that the DOD’s conclusion is arbitrary and lacks a factual basis and that DOD had not included related parties in partnership at all before reaching such a conclusion. In addition, recently, the Japanese Nature Protection Association found more than 118 dugongs’ feeding traces directly on the reclamation site only in 3 months from May to July 2014. These important follow-up findings have not been reflected nor to be reflected in the evaluation of ODB or DOD in spite of citizens groups’ calls.

Henoko US Base Planned since 1966

Currently, both the Japanese government and pro-base incumbent Okinawan governor Hirokazu Nakaima and some major media companies advocate the necessity of a new base at Henoko in exchange of closing Futenma Air Base. Even the former DOD Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, one of the defendants, called Futenma Air Base as “the world most dangerous US base.”

Today, the US government can use the Japan’s “host nation military support budget” while the US defense budget allocated for Marine Corps has been shrinking. (The Japanese government decided to provide annual host nation military budget of US$1.7 billion despite opposition from citizens’ groups) From the government’s standpoint, general constructors, a major political interest group, can make profits through building the state of the art base.

“To begin with, relocation of Futenma to Henoko” itself does not make sense,” said Yoshikazu Makishi, a renowned Okinawan architect and also a plaintiff. “In the US, there is a regulation that there should not be any residence within 4,500 meters length and 900 width from the end of any runway.

“However, as for Futenma Air Base, there are houses and even schools in this zone. Futenma does not comply with the US regulation and should be abolished immediately without any condition. It is quite absurd that both the US and Japanese governments say that Futenma could become a permanent air base if a new Henoko base cannot be constructed.”

Increasing International Attention

The world International Union for Conservation of Nature), a 1200 member umbrella organization including more than 200 governments and 11,000 scientists, adopted three resolutions to recommend the US and Japanese government to conduct an environmental impact assessment and to draw a plan to protect Okinawan dugongs in 2000, 2004, and 2008 respectively.

In March 2012, the United Nations Human Rights Office of High Commissioner Committee for Eliminating Racial Discrimination (CERD) gave warning to the government of Japan concerning the construction of the base and in November of the same year, CERD asked for further information. On Aug. 30 CERD sent its final recommendation to the government of Japan to regard Okinawan people as the local indigenous people and to respect their rights, public opinions, and culture. In this way, international attention has been mounting on the issues of Okinawa.

Anwar defends PKR decision to submit one name for Selangor MB

Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim speaks to the press at parliament today. – The Malaysian Insider pic by Afif Abd Halim, October 13, 2014.PKR today stood by its decision to submit only one name as the Selangor menteri besar candidate, saying that it would have sent in another name if the Sultan had rejected its first candidate.

Party de facto leader, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, said that it was the prerogative of the party which commanded the majority to hand in as many names as it wished.

"If we give one and it is rejected, we will give another name to replace it. So what is the problem," he replied to Tanjung Karang MP Datuk Seri Noh Omar, who asked him why PKR did not submit more than one candidate as requested by the Sultan.

Noh, who is also Selangor Umno chief, had asked the Permatang Pauh MP to explain why PKR did not do this in Selangor but had sent more than one name to the Sultan of Perak when it took over the state in 2008.

"So next time, Umno will also have to give three names to the Agong," said Anwar, referring to the prime minister's position, as other Pakatan Rakyat MPs cheered.

Both PKR and DAP had submitted only the name of PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail to the Sultan for the menteri besar's post on the grounds that she alone had the support of 30 of the 56 Selangor assemblymen.

This was despite reprimands from the palace, which had also turned down requests by Dr Wan Azizah to seek an audience.

PKR deputy president Mohamad Azmin Ali was later appointed as the new Selangor MB. The party said it was disappointed with the palace over the matter, adding that it had tainted the constitutional monarchy system and was not in line with the state constitution and the principle of parliamentary democracy.

Anwar, in debating the 2015 Budget earlier, said that the Sultan and the King's special position is bound by the spirit of the Federal Constitution, which means that the monarchy was a neutral institution which did not get involved in political affairs.

"For the record, I have talked about feudalism in the 51st Umno General Assembly where I said Datuk Onn Jaafar (Umno founder) had previously said that the independence concept of our country does not mean bringing feudalism back to life.

"It has to be clear that criticising feudalism and urging to change the way we think is not the same as calling for the abolishment of the monarchy system," he added.

Meanwhile, Noh Omar had also asked Anwar to explain claims by Khalid's aide Faekah Husin, who alleged that he had filed claims worth RM15 million in his role as Selangor economic advisor despite a salary of RM1.

"I don't take any travel allowance. The Selangor menteri besar will reveal all expenses of the State Economic Office, which is not more than RM15,000 a year," Anwar replied. – October 13, 2014.

The rise of extremism and death of reason – Syerleena Abdul Rashid

The hostility and animosity targeted at fellow Malaysians whose opposing views may not be in line with the doctrines endorsed by the ruling elite, is dangerously becoming a standardised template used to instil fear in would-be “dissenters”.

Ironically, just a few weeks ago, our prime minister told the world there was a need to “break the cycle where one group gains power only to wield it against another” and to provide an “inclusive” platform that reflects the “pluralistic society” we live in. His speech was nothing more than yet another lip service to appease and deceive international critics – an ideological dishonesty Malaysians have grown to love and hate.

On October 12, 2014, Suaram and GHAH (Gabungan Hapuskan Akta Hasutan) organised a gathering in Penang to call for the abolishment of the Sedition Act. What should have been a peaceful gathering turned into a whirlwind pandemonium, instigated by none other than the usual suspects – hired hooligans from the far right. Just a few minutes after the event started, a mob of Malay men disrupted the event with overzealous fervour, reaffirming that the threat of extremism is fast becoming a disease that may eventually destroy our country.

The ruling elite saturate our society with fear. They tell us to fear the loss of certain socio-political rights, the Communist threat, the Christian agenda and other creative fibs they conjure in order to remain in power. They exploit the fears of those who are most gullible and uninformed. For the rest of us, we can see through the lies and recognise the price our future generation will pay if we allow the rot to perpetuate further.

Calls that condone extremism and racially motivated intimidation have become more apparent and several right wing groups have become increasingly vocal because they have been granted undue consent to do so. This occurs because the ruling elite are aware that socio-political reforms in our society are inevitable; it is just a matter of time before the walls of oppression start crumbling down.

Fanaticism and bigotry have found a certain stronghold in our society: as the acceptance and influence of universal values have slowly eroded, genuine intellectualism is now seem more of a taboo – a threat that should be exterminated rather than a quality we should uphold. Such causes are due to a number of factors and are often seen as a “chain reaction” that reflects ineffective policies, waning quality of life and education, unemployment and questionable political leadership. It can be said that although political ideologies fuel the fire of extremism, it is the psychological aspect that facilitates and perpetuates such evils in our society.

The disillusionment that becomes increasingly apparent in some factions gives way to radical and extremist philosophies. Only the victims of severe socio-economic and political inequalities will start rebelling against universal values that uphold tolerance, respect and sound moral logic. When disenchantment and resentment become widespread, it makes it easier for the ruling elite to utilise the “divide and rule” tactic – masked under nationalistic catchphrases and patriotism that is anti-democratic, totalitarian and somewhat fascist.

The sentiments of an overtly strong nationalism and weak democratic practices allow extremism to flourish. The ruling elite will use this concoction to manipulate the broken dreams and the unfulfilled hopes of certain factions by feeding them government-backed propaganda.

The only way out of this is through comprehensive and accurate understanding of such phenomenon. Extremism and other racially motivated violence are all part and parcel of a political agenda created by the ruling elite. Although Malaysia’s political ethos may not seem to honour democracy and the just rights conferred on its citizens, the terror created by extremism is man-made, fabricated and by all means not natural and therefore can be brought down. – October 13, 2014.

Sedition Act promotes ignorance, claims Malaysian Bar chief

Malay Mail
by BOO SU-LYN

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 13 — The Sedition Act 1948 is a counter-productive law that will lead to ignorance and suppress the country’s growth, Malaysian Bar president Christopher Leong said as lawyers gear up for a mass rally against the colonial-era legislation that has snagged some 30 government dissenters recently.

Leong also pointed out that the Malaysian Bar’s Walk for Peace and Freedom scheduled for Thursday in the city centre will only be the professional legal body’s fourth demonstration in its 67-year long history.

“When the Bar does stand up and walk on the very rare occasion, we know there’s a rotten state of affairs,” Leong told Malay Mail Online in a recent interview.

The senior lawyer said that the Sedition Act, which has been used against at least 30 people since March last year, was counter-productive to the aims of creating a more inclusive and informed society because it criminalises the expression of thought.

“The Sedition Act makes us stupid,” Leong said.

“You cannot expect thinking and intelligent people to stop thinking and expressing their thoughts through inquiry, questions, debate and criticism. If you suppress these elements and punish them for their thoughts and questions, you in fact engender ignorance, unhappiness and retard growth,” he added.

He noted that more than 20 people have been investigated, charged or convicted under the Sedition Act this year, in what is seen as a government crackdown against lawyers, activists, academics and even journalists.

Leong said Malaysians should be allowed to debate issues like vernacular schools or matters involving the royalty, while stressing that freedom of speech and expression should not include the freedom to incite or to commit racial or religious violence.

“We should be allowed to ask questions on any aspect of the Federal Constitution and any institution under it so that answers may be provided and Malaysians will be educated,” the lawyer said.

Leong also stressed that the Malaysian Bar’s march was in support of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s 2012 pledge to repeal the Sedition Act and his call for moderates to rise up against extremism.

“The Malaysian Bar is standing up and giving voice to all peace-loving and moderate Malaysians,” he said.

Leong said the Malaysian Bar’s protest scheduled at the Padang Merbok car park in the city centre was organised for lawyers.

When asked if the public could join in, he said: “We cannot stop people from entering a public space”.

Leong said the protest was named the Walk for Peace and Freedom to call for the peace of all Malaysians irrespective of race or religion, lasting harmony and freedom.

“It’s a walk for freedom from fear, freedom from oppressive laws, freedom from exploitation for personal sectarian or selfish gains, freedom to discuss and debate, freedom to grow and mature, and freedom to learn,” he said.

Imprinting the Face of Gandhi on a New Brand of Leadership

By ELLEN BARRY

NEW DELHI — Watching Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the last month, as he began to carve out an image for himself beyond India’s borders, one might have gotten the impression that Mohandas K. Gandhi was his ideological progenitor, or his running mate.

Gandhi is everywhere in Delhi these days. A stylized drawing of his steel-rimmed, circular glasses is the logo of Mr. Modi’s new cleanliness drive, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, introduced with great fanfare on the anniversary of Gandhi’s birth. He is posed with a broom and basket on the cover of Organiser, the magazine of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the right-wing Hindu organization connected to Mr. Modi’s party. When the president of China, Xi Jinping, visited, Mr. Modi received him at Gandhi’s ashram. Then Mr. Modi visited President Obama in the United States and presented him with a copy of Gandhi’s translation of the Bhagavad Gita.

Gandhi, of course, is an unlikely avatar for the ascendant right wing in India. For most of the last century, Gandhi has been the symbolic leader of the Indian National Congress party, which Mr. Modi drove from power this year. Gandhi’s economic vision was fundamentally anticapitalist: He extolled rural over urban life and called industrialization “a curse for mankind.” During his lifetime, Gandhi was excoriated by right-wing activists — including the man who assassinated him — for acquiescing to the creation of Pakistan and advocating the rights of India’s Muslim minority.

Though Mr. Modi has always spoken of Gandhi with respect, he has echoed the criticism that Congress leaders gave preferential treatment to India’s minorities. Mr. Modi’s reputation as a Hindu hard-liner was defined in 2002, when bloody sectarian riots broke out under his watch as chief minister of the state of Gujarat. No Indian court has found him responsible for the riots, which left more than 1,200 dead, most of them Muslims.

So the Gandhi now embraced by Mr. Modi is an edited version. First and foremost, he is a preacher of cleanliness — a fair depiction, since he was passionate on the subject, known for seizing brooms and for insisting that even highborn followers, like his wife, empty their own chamber pots.

Mr. Modi has endorsed some elements of Gandhi’s economic thinking, urging consumers to buy homespun cloth instead of imported products. But his Gandhi hardly believes that “the future of India lies in its villages.” To a prosperous crowd of mainly Indian-Americans at Madison Square Garden in New York last month, Mr. Modi described Gandhi as a character remarkably like them, a man who “went abroad, became a barrister, had opportunities,” but “came back to serve the nation.”

Tushar A. Gandhi, the great-grandson of the independence leader, has watched this process from his home in Mumbai with curiosity and, at times, satisfaction.

He noted, however, that during his 12 years as a state leader, Mr. Modi had never invoked Gandhi with such enthusiasm.

“In this short period of 100 days that he has been the prime minister of India, it seems everything he does is guided by Bapu,” he said, using an affectionate term meaning father. “It is a bit of a surprise. The only thing I can say at the moment is, I hope it is sincere.”

While preparing to seek the post of prime minister, Mr. Modi set out to create political space for himself outside the Hindu right wing, in part by laying claim to beloved figures associated with the Congress party.

The most obvious was the independence fighter Sardar Patel, known as “the Iron Man of India,” whom Mr. Modi so admires that he has begun a project to build a 597-foot Patel monument, tall enough for recognition in the Guinness Book of World Records. There is little mystery in why Mr. Modi identifies with Mr. Patel. He was a rival to India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, and unlike the secular, Anglophile Mr. Nehru, Mr. Patel was an ascetic Hindu, far less sympathetic to the demands of India’s Muslims and more to the right on economic matters.

Outside India, however, Mr. Patel’s name provokes only a dive for an encyclopedia, whereas Gandhi’s prompts hushed reverence. More surprising, perhaps, is Mr. Modi’s effort to associate himself with Mr. Nehru, a leader whom he has publicly criticized in the past as weak. Last week, Mr. Modi called him “Chacha Nehru,” or “Uncle Nehru,” and proposed that his Nov. 14 birthday become a nationwide celebration of — you guessed it — hygiene and cleanliness.

With the adoption of Mr. Nehru, Mr. Modi has “got the whole packet” of Congress’s heroes, said Shiv Visvanathan, a social scientist and self-described liberal. “Congress is left with very little,” he said. “It’s literally a stealing of intellectual property.”

Tushar Gandhi declared last week that Mr. Modi’s rollout of the cleanliness campaign, which required top officials to go out and clean neighborhoods, was the only celebration in decades “which would have gotten Bapu’s seal of approval.”

Whether it represents an ideological shift toward the center is still unclear. Mr. Modi has a knack, unique among recent Indian leaders, for broadcasting political signals in all directions at once. Prabhu Chawla, editorial director of The New Indian Express, ticked off a long list of gestures aimed at proving Mr. Modi’s credentials as a Hindu nationalist. When he visited Nepal on a two-day trip, he stopped to make an offering at a famous Hindu temple. At the White House, he stuck to a religious fast and refused to eat or drink anything except hot water.

“His idea of India is Hindi Hindu — people who speak Hindi and those who are Hindu,” Mr. Chawla said. “He is wearing his Hinduism on his sleeve, and saying, ‘You take it or leave it.’ ”

Mr. Modi’s invocations of Gandhi may simply be an acknowledgment that one cannot rule India without allegiance to him. More than two decades have passed since Atal Vajpayee, the last prime minister to rise out of India’s right wing, began to praise Gandhi in public, opening the door for the Bharatiya Janata Party to interlace his name and image with Hindu nationalism, said Ashutosh Varshney, a professor of political science at Brown University.

Elements of Gandhi’s thinking fell by the wayside, he said, such as the love he professed for India’s Muslims and his vision of a “feminized,” less aggressive Hinduism. Professor Varshney added that there was nothing unusual in that.

“No one in India, not even Congress, has fully embraced Gandhi,” he said. “Gandhi is the father of the nation, no doubt. But Gandhi is also a difficult father.”

Cleanliness, in any case, is a proposition that no one can dispute.

Rajmohan Gandhi, the independence leader’s grandson, certainly could not, though he called it “an incomplete representation of Gandhian thought.” Asked whether the prime minister was moving in that direction, Rajmohan Gandhi said he was skeptical.

“Time will tell,” he said. “Gandhi is available to all to use or misuse. My complaining will make no difference. But Gandhi may spring back and create problems for those who misuse him.”

Najib, Putin Among 53 Delegates To Attend 10th Asem Summit

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 13 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Russian President Vladimir Putin are among the 53 delegates expected to attend the 10th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit which to be held in Milan, Italy from Oct 16 to 17.

European Union (EU) Ambassador and Head of Delegation to Malaysia, Luc Vandebon said, the meeting would be attended by at least 48 leaders and heads of state and goverment, while the other remaining delegation would be foreign ministers.

"We expect the summit will boost relationship between Asia and Europe expecially in security, economic trade, food safety, education and other current issues that need to be coped with for our own good," he said on the sidelines of the preparation of the summit, here, today.

Vandebon said as security became one of the topics to be discussed, he did not rule out the possibility of the Malaysia Airlines (MAS) MH17 incident, terrorism and conflict in Afghanistan to 'pop up' during the discussion.

"We also hope that the summit will bring positive impact for the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) among the participating countries.

ASEM-SUMMIT 2 (LAST) KUALA LUMPUR

"This is because there's a lot of preliminary sections that can be used by the leaders in the summit to enchance their mutual understanding and personal relationship," he said.

As the summit generated interest around the world since its establishment, Vandebon said this year, two new member states namely Croatia and Kazakhstan also would be joining the summit.

ASEM was established in 1996 as a forum for countries in Asia and Europe to discuss how to build a new partnership between the two regions and the next (11th) summit will be held in Mongolia.
