Lahad Datu update[7PM]: Intruders escape police perimeter, hostages held

Global Hindu Reaction against the Islamic Brutality on Bangladesh Minorities in recent days.

Supporters of Sayeede, Jammati Islamic beasts chopped to kill this innocent Hindu Child in Noakhali (Bangladesh) yesterday. What was the sin of this innocent Hindu Child? O Islamic Rioters, Please give me the answer?
Global reaction against the brutal assault on Bangladesh Hindu Minorities by Jamaat e Islami after the pronouncement of execution of BD war criminal Sayedee.

64831_10151392416428600_1250994952_nSunday 3 March 2013 :: The Rights organisations in Bangladesh and abroad are now contemplating a bigger fight against the recurring atrocities upon the Bangladesh Minorities, especially upon Hindu Minorities in recent days after the pronouncement of execution of BD war criminal Delwar Hossain Sayedee by Special Bangladesh Tribunal.

Sayedee was convicted for the severe charges as accused of working with the Al-Badr and Rajakar group during the independence struggle and carrying out numerous atrocities, including forcibly converting Hindus to Islam. Sayedee formed some small groups to loot and seize the property of Bengali Hindus and those who supported and participated in Liberation of Bangladesh.

The tribunal found Sayeede guilty of eight out of the 20 charges levelled against him. These were murder, torture, rape and forcibly converting Hindus to Islam.

Ban Ki Moon, UN Gen Secy.Getting disappointed and being arrogant with the ‘hang to death’ order for Sayedee, the fundamental Islamic force led by Jamaat e Islam of Bangladesh lashed out a political confrontation with the opponents and wrecked a havoc upon the Hindu Minorities in a most unreasonable retaliation.

Ban Ki Moon, UN Gen Secy.
On Friday, the UN Gen Secy, Mr. Ban Ki Moon has also conveyed his peace message for the BD Govt and Jammatis both to maintain the harmony for Bangladesh people and requested to resist the ongoing violence to protect the rights of minorities there. In an UN Press release, Mr. Ban Ki Moon urged BD Govt and the confronting Jamaati to stop the violence immediately, in order to avoid any fatal consequence in further extension.

As per report, the Bangladesh Hindu-Bauddha-Christian Unity Council (BHBCUC) of US chapter called a
press conference on Saturday (2nd March) at a venue of Jackson Heights in New York.

While the Council has already conveyed the detailed atrocities upon the Hindu Minorities in Noakhali and Chattagram in US External Affairs Department, UN Human Rights Council, Human Rights Watch and Amensty International, the body of BHBCUC has planned to organize Human Chains at Diversity Plaza on Monday (3rd March) and at the office of UN on 10th March in New York City.

The British High Commissioner in Dhaka, Mr. Robert Gibson expressed his deep concern and resentment upon the attack upon the religious places and the recent attacks in BD in a press conference on Sunday 3rd March held in Dhaka.

The Bangladesh Hindu Buddha Christian Oikya Parishad formed a human chain in Chattagram Saturday to protest what they called ‘heinous attacks’ by Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir on the country’s minority communities in the wake of the death verdict for Jamaat leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee.

Dhaka Protest Rally – Black March – BNHGA.
Rally were conducted by Hindu Buddha Christian Oikya Parishad, Bangladesh Jatiyo Hindu Mahajot (Bangladesh National Hindu Grand Alliance – BNHGA), Bangladesh Puja Udjapon Porishad, Bangladesh Sevashram Foundation, ISKCON, Motijhil Thana Sarbojanin Puja Committee and others to raise an united voice to end the victimization of Hindu Minorities as and when the fundamentalists determine to relish on.

In a press statement, it is categorically said that ” We are in a very critical crisis period, when a matter of Justice towards the settlement of anti-liberation crime has been vitiated in a communal texture. A heinous torture, murder, loot, assault, destruction of temples are rampantly done in an utter communal method to extinct the Hindu community in Bangladesh”. The organizers of Human Chain and Protest rally expressed their grave concern for the destruction and burning of 1500 Hindu household, 50 temples, murder of 3 Hindu minority people, injuring over 100 Hindus in last three days of spreading violence all over Bangladesh. Such targeted violence upon Hindu minorities by Jamaati hooligans covering 22 districts including Noakhali, Chattagram, Coxbazar, Kumilla, Laxmipur, Gaibandha, Brahmanbaria, Syllet, Satkhira, Bagerhat and Thakurgaon.

An estimated 100 crores of loss has been levied on Hindus by the torture friendly Jamaati beasts under human skin. The leadership in the protest rally and human chain has been expressed their concern to the deterioration of minority status of Hindus under an unbearable Islamic persecution and threat perception.

In Bangladesh, some 26,00,000 acres of land was declared as Enemy Property and at least 2 crores of Hindus were compelled to leave Bangladesh under an Islamic conspiracy.

The protest rally and human chain were led by Kanutosh Majumder, Subroto Chowdhury, Gobinda
burning of effigy of bd prime minister at silchar
Chandra Pramanik, Basudev Dhar, Ripon Dey, Pinaki Das, R Das Gupta and Sanyasis (Monks) of various Muths (Monasteries) of Dhaka and far sides.

In Bharat (India), the protesters of ’Gairik Bharat’ (Saffron India) held a protest demonstration in front of Silchar District Collectorate Office, where they burnt the effigy of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hassina in a protest of recent inhumane torture upon Hindus and destruction and desecration of Hindu Temples in Bangladesh.

Hindu Existence Forum has specific news for upcoming protest rallies in USA and European Countries to express solidarity with the Bangladesh minorities under a severe torture of the fundamentalist whatever under the regimen of BNP or Awami League. The series of violation of Human Rights and brutal torture upon Bangladeshi Hindus in 1946-47, 1971, 1990, 1992 and 2001 is not only a pathetic history, still it is a horrible experience of death and loss of everything in the days and minutes of 2013 also.

Sultan wants UN, superpowers to intervene

Sulu Sultan Jamalul Kiram III says his next step will be to request help from the UN, the UK and the US.

PETALING JAYA: The self-styled Sulu Sultan Jamalul Kiram III wants the United Nations, the United States and the United Kingdom to intervene in his claim over Sabah, Philippine news website ABS-CBNnews.com reported today.

According to the news portal, Jamalul said he had lost faith in the Philippine government’s ability to help the Kiram clan in its claim to the north Borneo State.

Jamalul’s army comprising some 200 men has remained in Kampung Tanduo, 130 km from Lahad Datu, Sabah for three weeks now.

The armed intruders reportedly lost at least 12 men in its skirmishes against the Malaysian police and armed forces last Friday.

Jamalul’s attempts to seize Sabah by force has earned the disapproval of President Benigno Aquino III, who has repeatedly appealed to the sultanate’s army to return home and resolve the territorial dispute in the Philippines.

Similarly, the Malacanang Palace said today it was not disregarding the Kiram family’s claim over Sabah but pointed out there was no reason for the army to stay there.

But instead of heeding the calls for retreat, Jamalul told the news portal today that his next step would be to seek help from the international body and two superpowers.

He said the last time the issue was brought before the UN was in the 1960s, under the term of then President Diasdado Macapagal.

US bound by agreement

In another development, spokesman for the sultanate Abraham Idjirani said it was seeking the assistance of America to intercede by invoking a 1915 agreement signed with then US colonial government in the Philippines

He said that under the Kiram-Carpenter Agreement signed on March 22, 1915, the US had agreed to provide “full protection” to the Sulu Sultan.

He added that under that agreement which was signed by then US-appointed Governor of Mindanao and Sulu province, Frank W Carpenter, with the Sulu Sultan, the latter had relinquished his and his heirs’ right to temporal sovereignty, tax collection and arbitration laws in exchange for an allowance, a piece of land and recognition as religious leader.

He said under the agreement, the US had also agreed to give “full protection to the Sultan of Sulu should the question of Sabah arise in the future between the sultanate and any foreign authority.”

“We will remind them of their moral obligation. That obligation is not to use violent means but to help find a solution,” Idjirani was reported by the Philippines Inquirer.

Idjirani said MalacaƱang’s “small window of opportunity” to end the standoff was not acceptable because all the government wanted was Agbimuddin’s group pullout from Sabah, without assurance of negotiations involving the sultanate’s claim to Sabah.

Eight Malaysians killed

Yesterday, Inspector-General of Police Ismail Omar confirmed that a total of six policemen were killed in an ambush by armed intruders in Kampung Sri Jaya, Simunul, Semporna, Sabah on Saturday.

He said six of the armed intruders were also killed.

Police are investigating whether the group, believed to be less than 10 in number, in Kampung Sri Jaya Simunul are linked to the royal army of the Sultanate.

On Friday, two VAT 69 police commandos, ASP Zulkifli Mamat, 29 and Sergeant Sabarudin Daud, were killed, while three others were injured in a gunfire with the royal army in Kampung Tandou.

12 of the armed Sultan Sulu followers were also killed.

Yesterday, a group of soldiers from the 21st Royal Malay Regiment at the 8th Brigade Camp, Pengkalan Chepa, left for Sabah to boost security forces there, Bernama reported.

Armed forces Chief General Zulkifeli Mohd Zin was reported to have said that two more army battalions would be deployed in several areas in the east coast of Sabah.

The magician spellbinds his audience

Love him or loathe him. The undeniable fact is that when given a microphone, Anwar Ibrahim transforms into a magician. And in Shah Alam last night, he cast a spell on the crowd.

SHAH ALAM: Business was roaring at the Nasi Kandar restaurant. Its waiters, unaccustomed to such large crowds, appeared flustered.

Amid the clatter of tea glasses and orders being shouted from across the floor, a stream of anti-Barisan Nasional propaganda poured out of the speakers put up next door.

The lower-middle class neighbourhood of Sri Muda was enveloped in excitement and the rain did not deter a sea of people from turning up for the ceramah.

Umbrellas, newspapers and plastic bags shielded the crowd from the droplets. The people had gathered for two reasons – Anwar Ibrahim and S Ambiga.

The Bersih co-chairperson’s presence at these opposition ceramah has cast aspersion on her claim of being neutral. But then again, BN leaders have never invited her to speak at their events on the importance of clean and fair elections.

When it was announced that Ambiga had arrived, the predominantly Malaysian Indian crowd surged forward to catch a closer glimpse of the woman responsible for the two mammoth rallies that rattled the Najib administration.

Hundreds of mobile phones and cameras were raised into the air to snap photos as the mother of two, draped in a saree, was led towards the makeshift stage, wearing a garland.

Despite her poor grasp of the Tamil language and her affluent background, the Bersih co-chairperson has become a venerated figure among Malaysian Indians of all classes.

This was evident when the crowd mobbed her as she left, hugging her, shaking her hand and posing for photographs.

In her speech, the former Bar Council president stressed that she was not telling the people who to vote for but reminded them to cast their ballots for the right leaders.

Ambiga, who was likened to India’s former prime minister Indra Gandhi, also spoke on the importance of exercising the democratic right to vote and the need to ensure that the election was free and fair.

‘Here comes the seventh prime minister’

But the night belonged to Anwar.

As soon as the emcee announced the arrival of the nation’s “seventh prime minister”, the crowd erupted into a thunderous cheer and a famous old Tamil song started blaring.

The song “Naan Annai Yittal” was from a MGR movie and spoke of how the hero would end the suffering of the poor.

MGR was an actor with a demigod status who later became the chief minister of Tamil Nadu. His movies often revolved around defending the downtrodden and helping the poor.

What unravelled in the next few minutes once again stamped Anwar’s mark as the most entertaining politician in the nation, whose stage presence turns his rivals green with covetousness.

Love him or loathe him. The undeniable fact is that when given a microphone, Anwar transforms into a magician. And in Shah Alam last night, he cast a spell on the crowd.

Lip-syncing the lyrics, the opposition leader ploughed through the audience and then, much to the delight of those present, mimicked the trademark dance steps of MGR. Even Ambiga, who until then managed to keep a straight face, found it difficult to contain her laughter.

Despite his age and hectic schedule, Anwar showed little signs of fatigue as he paced the length and breadth of the stage, switching his tone and expression from humorous to serious, holding the crowd in awe until past midnight.

‘Don’t exploit Lahad Datu bloodbath’

Training his guns on the bloodbath in Lahad Datu, he cautioned Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak not to exploit the issue for political mileage following reports which implicated Anwar in the crisis.

“I am accused of being a US agent, they also claim I support the Arabs, the Indonesians and Turkey, and now the latest… I support Lahad Datu,” he said.

Touching on Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s remark that if BN had two-thirds majority, the coalition would strip Ambiga of her citizenship and the former premier’s suggestion that the granting of citizenship to the Chinese and Indians be probed as well, Anwar lambasted Najib for not defending his people.

“When Mahathir questioned this, the leaders of MIC, MCA and Umno kept quiet… look at our younger generation of Chinese and Indians here, how do they feel when after 50 years of Independence, their citizenship and loyalty are being questioned.

“What sort of country? What sort of leadership? Where in the world can citizens tolerate a leader questioning the citizenship of his own people? But in Malaysia it is tolerated because we have a very weak prime minister,” he said to a round of applause.

Anwar also criticised Najib and his cousin, Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein, for not voicing out against Perkasa’s threat to torch Malay Bibles containing the word Allah.

He argued that the country’s leadership was weak because the top level’s focus was centred on contracts and how to enrich themselves.

The opposition leader also spoke about the corruption in BN and the criticisms levelled against Pakatan Rakyat’s manifesto.

“When we speak about free education, abolishing PTPN and reducing oil prices [the critics claim], the nation would go bankrupt, but the RM500 million commission in the Scorpene deal profits the nation, AES and stealing cows also profit the nation,” he said sarcastically.

Criticising Najib’s estimates which the premier used in his argument that Pakatan’s pledges would brankrupt the nation, Anwar said the former’s estimates were wrong and that was because he learnt Mathematics from his wife, Rosmah Mansor.

Targeting the practice of cronyism, Anwar zeroed in on business tycoons such as T Ananda Krishnan, whom he said Pakatan would force to reduce the charges of Astro should the opposition coalition form the government.

Also in his crosshairs was Syed Mokhtar Al Bukhary, who the opposition leader claimed was poised to expand his business empire through the take over of MAS if BN won the next general election.

‘Next, they’ll say I did it with a cow’

No Anwar ceramah would be complete without him narrating his ordeal when he was sacked from office, arrested, beaten, stripped and humiliated.

He claimed that even Nelson Mandela sympathised with him, saying that while he had spent a longer time in prison, he was never subjected to such degradation.

On the sexual related charges against him, Anwar quipped: “They claim I do it with men, they claim I do it with women… next, they would claim I have done it with a cow.”

“When I go back to the kampung, I am worried about the cows there, I am worried that Perkasa or Umno Youth would… plant a strand of my hair on the cow and cry ‘DNA’!” he added.

Anwar said while the next government was bound to continue with the agreements inked by its predecessor, he however added that the provisions of these agreements would be re-looked at if the projects did not benefit or were harmful to the people.

As for Mahathir, Anwar said he had forgiven his nemesis and would not arrest him should Pakatan seize control of Putrajaya.

However, he stressed that the new government would go after the contracts issued to Mahathir’s sons.

Whether or not the applause and roars of support turn into votes in the coming general election, one thing was certain. Anwar gave the people of Sri Muda a night to remember, one that was bound to crop up during the coffeeshop talks there for weeks to come.

And that is the magic touch of this man.

Penduduk mahu ditamatkan segera

Another YouTube video mocking Project IC

A video showing Bangladeshis receiving MyKads with the Malaysia Truly Asia theme song in the background goes viral on the social networking site.

PETALING JAYA: The creative juices of pro-reform movements appear to be on overdrive nearing the general election, with the creation of another video titled Malaysia Truly Asia Edisi PRU 13, which pokes fun at Project IC.

The 55-second video, posted on YouTube by one known as Nasi Kandar 1957, shows several Bangladeshi men selling pirated discs along a road pavement.

The disc sellers later started running away after hearing the police were coming but were eventually caught by the authorities.

While squatting on the road, a “police man” asked them why they were fleeing from the scene when he only wanted to give them MyKads.

At this juncture, the Bangladeshi men started smiling, with the Malaysia Truly Asia campaign song playing in the background.

“Don’t be surprised. Even foreign workers can vote in Malaysia under Barisan Nasional. Say no to BN,” read the caption at the end of the video

One commentator named Nurul Afikah said,” I can only laugh thinking about what will happen to us 20 years down the road.”

Another commentator named Razman Rahman echoed Nurul’s sentiments, saying that was the reality in Malaysia.

Fighting in Sabah rages

Sultan of Sulu Jamalul Kiram III and his daughter, Princess Jacel Kiram, blame the fresh violence in Sabah on the government’s refusal to talk to them about their claim to the Malaysian territory. RICHARD REYES

Supporters of the sultan of Sulu struck back on Saturday night, killing five Malaysian policemen and seizing four local government officials in an attack that indicated an escalation of violence to other parts of Sabah after the killing of 12 of the sultan’s followers in a clash with Malaysian security forces in Lahad Datu on Friday.

Abraham Idjirani, spokesman for the sultanate of Sulu, said an Islamic religious leader and his four sons were killed in the fighting in the seaside village of Simunul in Semporna town, 300 kilometers from Tanduao village in Lahad Datu, the site of a 3-week-old standoff between Malaysian security forces and a group of followers of Sultan Jamalul Kiram III.

Idjirani said two “highest” military officials, one police officer, and one “highest civilian” officer were being held by Jamalul’s supporters affiliated with Alianapia Kiram, a brother of the sultan.

Reports coming from Malaysia said two supporters of the Sulu sultan were killed in the shootout with policemen.

Idjirani said the group of sultanate followers led by Agbimuddin Kiram, another brother of Jamalul, had “occupied and controlled” Semporna, which is populated by Filipinos from Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Basilan and the Zamboanga peninsula.

Alim Hashim Mudjahab, chairman of the Islamic Council Committee of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF), told the Inquirer in Zamboanga City that supporters of the sultan attacked a police station in Semporna on Saturday night.

“They freed more than a hundred Filipino Muslims who were arrested on Friday and they even captured the Malaysian police chief and his colleagues,” Mudjahab said.

“We are worried because it seems that these reports are not important to the Philippine government,” he said.

In Tawau, Mudjahab said, followers of the sultan attacked a convoy of Malaysian military trucks, “hurling dynamite commonly used for fishing.”

“As we are talking now (11 a.m. Sunday), tension is spreading as far as Sandakan and there are reports that some Tausug residing in Kota Kinabalu are ready to fight the Malaysian authorities,” he said.

Mudjahab said he received the information from “MNLF supporters in those areas.”

But Lt. Gen. Rey Ardo, chief of the military’s Western Mindanao Command, said he had not received information about an escalation of Friday’s violence in Lahad Datu to other parts of Sabah.

Police raid

Idjirani said the violence spread to Semporna when Malaysian policemen pretending to round up undocumented Filipinos stormed Simunul village in search of relatives of the sultan.

He said the policemen shot one Imam Maas and his four sons and wounded one Imam Jul when they learned that they were taking care of the sultan’s relatives in the area, Alianapia and Amir Bahar.

The killings angered the villagers, who attacked the authorities and seized four Malaysian officials.

Idjirani said the sultanate of Sulu blamed the fresh violence on the Malaysian government, which, like the Philippine government, refused to deal with the Kirams on their claim to Sabah.

“This escalation (of the violence) is the result of the hardline policy of the Federation of Malaysia of not [sitting down to] discuss the standoff in Lahad Datu [for] a peaceful resolution of this issue, so that, like MalacaƱang, the sultanate of Sulu is washing its hands [of] this conflict now escalating in Sabah,” Idjirani told a news conference at the sultan’s home in Taguig City.

He said Jamalul, who learned that 10 of his followers were captured during the clash in Tanduao only on Saturday morning, asked his supporters in Semporna to take care and feed the Malaysian officials they had seized.

Jamalul did not call for the release of the Malaysian officials, as they could be used as witnesses to the “atrocities” committed by the Malaysian government, Idjirani said.

He said the sultan’s supporters in Semporna could not be blamed for their action because it was the Malaysian police who raided the town.

“These are unorganized efforts of the people, who can no longer stand the actions that the Malaysian government has been taking against them since 1982,” Idjirani said.

Jamalul’s daughter, Princess Jacel Kiram, said the people of Semporna would decide whether the four Malaysian officials should be released.

She said the people were not violent. If they were, they would have killed the four officials, she said.

Idjirani said people from Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi and the Zamboanga peninsula were departing for Sabah to help Agbimuddin’s group.

He said he did not know for sure whether those people, who were going to Sabah without consulting the sultan, were armed. It is possible, however, that they are armed, he said.

Malaysian story

Jacel said her father was calling on his supporters to stay calm. The sultan, she said, was “doing everything he could” to solve the Sabah crisis peacefully.

Reports coming from Malaysia indicated that it was the sultan’s supporters who started the violence in Semporna.

Malaysian Inspector General of Police Ismail Omar said five policemen were killed when they were ambushed at a village on stilts in Semporna late Saturday.

Ismail said a police team had entered Simunul village in Semporna in a hunt for a group of gunmen when they were fired upon.

He said two of the gunmen were killed in the shootout with the police team.

Police have encircled the village to track down the remaining gunmen, Ismail said.

He said the security forces were on the hunt for 10 men, three of whom were armed and seen wearing military fatigues at two villages in the east-coast district of Kunak at about 10 p.m. on Saturday.

Ismail said police were trying to establish whether the Semporan and Kunak incidents were related to the Tanduao standoff that turned violent on Friday.

He said police arrested three men who were trying to slip through a security cordon around Tanduao late Saturday.

The three, who were armed with knives, were detained for questioning, Ismail said.

More security forces arrived in Semporna on Sunday, leading to evacuations of residents for fear of more fighting.

Filipinos were among the people leaving the town, reports coming from Malaysia said.

Radio reports from Sabah said a Filipino man armed with an M-16 rifle was beaten to death by residents of a village near Semporna Sunday morning.

The reports quoted villagers as saying the man was a follower of the sultan of Sulu.

The Semporna police chief, Mohamad Firdaus Francis Abdullah, had no comment about the incident.

Surprised

Acting Gov. Mujiv Hataman of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) said he was surprised when told about reports of fighting in Sabah.

“What? Where did those [reports] [come] from?” Hataman said when contacted for comment by the Inquirer.

Al Tillah, policy adviser to the sultanate of Sulu, said President Aquino had created a team to handle the Sabah crisis.

He said the team was composed of Armed Forces Chief of Staff Gen. Emmanuel Bautista, Ardo and Hataman.

“The Sabah issue is not a military issue,” Tillah said. “It’s [a] political issue that requires diplomatic action.”—With reports from Julie S. Alipala and Alan A. Nawal, Inquirer Mindanao; and The Star/Asia News Network

Hindu Malaysia Agenda -Rally

http://www.semparuthi.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/hindu.jpg Some 72 Hindu based NGO’s in Malaysia have decided unanimously to organize a Hindu Malaysia Rally on 16thMarch, 2013 at Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall, Kuala Lumpur from 3pm to 6pm. The main aim of this rally is to highlight demands of the Hindu Community in 5 key areas; mainly constitutional dilemma, conversion problems, Education, Economy, Social and Religion. A task force committee has been formed and all efforts are done to gather an audience of 10,000 Hindus on that day.

For many generations, the Hindu Malaysian Community has toiled hard and contributed enormously in developing the economy and bringing prosperity and progress to the country. Unfortunately, the very community which has contributed so much has been left far behind. Thus, in view of the coming 13th General Election, Hindu Malaysians have the opportunity to position them to ensure that their rights and needs are taken care which in turn will strengthen the Malaysian Nation. In about 62 Parliamentary Constituencies and 148 State Assembly Constituencies, Hindus form a significant section of voters who can determine the outcome of the General Election.

“The right time has come for Hindu Malaysians to show our solidarity once again by participating in the rally. We owe this duty to the community and our future generations because the Government of the day will decide on policies which will shape the future direction of the nation” said Dr.R.Rupa Saminathan, the organizing secretary of the rally.

Sentences that just do not make sense

The Star
by MAIZATUL NAZLINA and QISHIN TARIQ

KUALA LUMPUR: The administration of criminal justice in Malaysia is in need of a better system for more uniformity in sentencing.

Besides disparities in sentences for similar offences and offences of a violent nature, the people are also concerned over cases in which judges have chosen to impose bonds for good behaviour.

On March 13, for example, a Kuala Lumpur magistrate sentenced a disabled man to a year’s jail for attempting to steal a car radio cassette player.

The same court sentenced a woman to a day’s jail and RM500 fine for stealing a packet of disposable napkins from a supermarket.

The disabled man faced a maximum of seven years’ jail and a fine under Section 397A of the Penal Code and the woman, up to 10 years’ jail and a fine under Section 380.

As early as in 2004, Attorney-General Tan Sri Gani Patail had raised the matter of disparity in sentences while reminding legal and judicial officers of the importance of giving the public reasons for their decisions.

The Attorney-General said people were confused with courts sentencing rapists to 17 years’ jail while those convicted of culpable homicide were only jailed up to eight years.

The discretion of judges to impose good behaviour bond under Section 294 of the Criminal Procedure Code became a controversy last year.

There were no complaints when a magistrate in Bukit Mertajam imposed such a bond for two years, with RM10,000 as security in one surety without deposit, on a housewife who pleaded guilty to stealing a bag of groceries.

Her legal aid lawyer had submitted that the unemployed mother of four had not been conscious of her actions since she had been diagnosed with breast cancer a year before.

However, the public was outraged when other courts imposed a similar bond on young men convicted of raping minors, moving the Government to announce that it would introduce a Bill in Parliament to remove the discretionary powers of judges in sentencing offenders for statutory rape.

The Bar Council would rather see the establishment of a Sentencing Council instead of mandatory sentencing, said its chairman Lim Chee Wee.

Representatives from the judiciary, the Malaysian Bar, the Attorney-General’s Chambers, civil society groups, universities and foreign experts are scheduled to meet tomorrow to discuss the merits of such a council.

Philippines, Malaysia Seek Peaceful Resolution, Semporna And Lahad Datu Calm

KUALA LUMPUR, March 5 (Bernama) -- Malaysia and the Philippines are continuing efforts to seek a peaceful resolution, 21 days into the armed intruders incident in Lahad Datu, Sabah.

Towards this end, Philippine Ambassador to Malaysia J. Eduardo Malaya and Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Jose Brilliantes today met with Malaysian Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Tun Hussein in Lahad Datu Monday.

So far, neither party has issued any statement on the meeting.

On behalf of the Filipino government, Brillantes and Malaya offered their help to seek a peaceful resolution, at a brief meeting with Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar Sunday.
