1) 1. HINDRAF acknowledges that our grass root supporters are disappointed that the Bukit Selambau seat was not offered to any of the 5 short listed candidates (two of whom were HINDRAF coordinators and remaining 3 were reputable KEADILAN local leaders) and urge our supporters to remain focussed and calm.

2) 2. I had spoken to HINDRAF National Coordinator RS Tanendran and he confirms that most of his statements had been taken out of context and manipulated by the government run media to portray that HINDRAF does not support PAKATAN to create confusion and anxiety amongst supporters.

3) 3.The discretion of candidate selection in Bukit Selambau was within the prerogative of Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim along with the other leaders of the PAKATAN coalition. However we hope in future there would be some level of consultation with HINDRAF to avoid any unwarranted confusion.

4) 4.Our mutual “Political Enemy” would be no other than the BN imperialist government. Our goal is to create awareness of the depleted state of her subject, to stay focussed by initiating actions by working together hand in hand in fairness to ensure we successfully get rid of our “common enemy” in the next elections. After 50 years HINDRAF created the awareness that changed the mindset of 80% traditional Indian BN voters who had always been loyal to BN.

5) 5. It is time all Pakatan leaders-Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Mr.Lim Kit Siang and Dato Seri Haji Hadi Awang realise that the current Political climate has to be maximised. If we fail to work and act together to get rid of BN in the next GE (2012) then the hope of opposition ever taking over the reign of the Country will die permanently and I honestly envisage the crack and crumble of PAKATAN from then on.

6) 6. I had the opportunity to discuss pertinent questions raised by grass root supporters of HINDRAF with Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim and we had come to an understanding that matters affecting the Indian community would be further discussed and resolved at a later date with leaders of all 3 PAKATAN coalition.

7) 7.The Indian voters in Bukit Gantang and Bukit Selambau are aware of the predicament of the society and are now politically mature thus they could not be fooled by BN and their “peanuts” often thrown during elections.

8) 8.HINDRAF reiterates its commitment to campaign and support PAKATAN candidates in both Bukit Gantang and Bukit Selambau.

MCA, MIC laud Najib's 'One Malaysia' concept ( Malaysiakini)

Barisan Nasional component parties MCA and MIC are quick to express confidence in the leadership of newly-minted prime minister Najib Abdul Razak and praised his 'One Malaysia' concept.

Najib, 55, was sworn in as the country's sixth prime minister at the Istana Negara this morning.

In congratulating Najib, MCA spokesperson Lee Wei Kiat said the 'One Malaysia' concept is themed on national unity and recognises the contribution of all races.

"Najib has clearly set his aspirations on improving race relations to ensure that Malaysians forge friendships based on trust and mutual respect which seem lost in recent months.

"Envisaging a new mindset of rejuvenation, the 'One Malaysia' reflects the model of transformation and change which will strengthen national unity and development," he said in a statement.

Lee said it is crucial that the concept which ensures that no community is isolated from development of any kind be given full backing from all Malaysians.

For stability and growth of the nation, he said, Malaysians must observe the rule of law, fairness, reject mob rule, discrimination, complacency and corruption.

Push forward reform agenda

Although not an easy task, Lee said MCA hopes that Najib will push forward his reform agenda with courage and determination to ensure fair implementation for all.

"Even as deputy prime minister, Najib has demonstrated his consideration for multiracial Malaysians when he mentioned that the government was moving towards the liberalisation of unfair and discriminatory practices based on race.

"Najib's inclusive nature was further evinced when he approached both the Chinese and Tamil communities – firstly, by visiting the Sin Chew Daily on Tuesday to understand the Chinese community more, and secondly, the allocation of RM80million for 374 Tamil schools in nine states," he said.

"We are certain that in due course, Najib will make more overtures to other minority groups. The new prime minister is very much in touch with the needs of ordinary Malaysians and is committed towards political and economical development," he added.

In conveying MCA's appreciation to former premier Abdullah Ahmad Badawi for his statesmanship displayed which enabled a smooth change-of-guards in national and party leadership, Wei Kiat said: "Unlike other countries where military coups were initiated to install a new prime minister and cabinet which inevitably led to national chaos, Abdullah’s handing over the administration in a smooth and dignified manner to his successor attests to his astuteness and statesmanship."

He will do more for Indians

Meanwhile, MIC is also confident that Najib will place greater emphasis and priority on the development of all Malaysians irrespective of their race.

Congratulating him on his appointment, MIC secretary-general Dr S Subramaniam said Najib has pledged to unite all Malaysians under the 'One Malaysia' concept.

"We believe he will do more for Indians," he said in a statement.

Subramaniam, who is the human resources ministers, also expressed his gratitude to former premier Abdullah Ahmad Badawi for his contributions to the Indian community, especially in the construction of MIC's Aimst university and the setting up of the cabinet committee for Indians.

Opposition braced for hard time from Malaysia's new PM

An old boy of Malvern College will be sworn in as prime minister of Malaysia on Friday amid opposition fears that he will launch a crackdown on dissent

Najib Razak, 55, inherits the premiership at one of the most difficult times in the government's unbroken 52-year rule. The opposition made record gains in elections a year ago, raising the possibility that Mr Najib's United Malay's National Organisation (Umno) could lose power for the first time.

Few in the country believe he will enjoy more than a brief honeymoon period with the former "tiger" economy entering recession after exports tumbled by 27 per cent in January, while public debt is soaring.

Opinion polls show Mr Najib is even more unpopular than the man he is replacing, Abdullah Badawi, who was hastened into retirement after last year's electoral failure.

The fight-back may have already begun. Last month a senior opposition figure, Karpal Singh, was charged with sedition; an opposition rally was tear-gassed after it failed to obtain a police permit and two opposition newspapers were banned.

There has been a furore over alleged dirty tricks in Perak, one of Malaysia's state governments.

"The writing is all over the wall that a clampdown is looming," said Dzulkifli Ahmad of the Islamic party, Pas.

Anwar Ibrahim, the main opposition leader and Mr Najib's long-time rival for the premiership, claimed: "We know Najib's tactics - intimidation, fraud, corruption, bribery."

Mr Najib, who has been a government minister since 1986 and deputy prime minister since 2004, denies such allegations. He has protested that he is being prejudged and wants to clean up politics.

"Give me a chance, judge me by my actions, don't judge me on rumours and baseless allegations," he said at last week's party convention where he was elected unopposed as leader. "I will reform and I will make changes. I am aware that the people expect me to do certain things."

Mr Najib acknowledges that his party is in desperate need of reform if it is to win back public trust. "UMNO is seen as a party that practises money politics," he said, using the Malaysian euphemism for corruption.

He has promised sweeping reforms, partly aimed at attracting more foreign investment to Malaysia. But as the ultimate party insider, many people doubt Mr Najib's ability to change Umno's image.

According to analysis by Eurasia Group, a global political risk consultancy: "The public sees Najib as a member of the old guard, deeply entrenched in the very system they want reformed."

It predicts that Mr Najib's main tactic for rebuilding the government's authority will be attacking or even persecuting the opposition.

Bridget Welsh, a Malaysia specialist at Johns Hopkins University in America, agreed.

"I think the focal point is on limiting the opposition and their ability to organise," she said. "The other tactic is intimidation."

"There has already been an escalation," said Dr Welsh, referring to fears that Malaysia could be headed for political confrontation.

"This type of politics has already hurt the country in terms of the economy." The first public test of Mr Najib's popularity will come almost immediately, in three by-elections next week.

Malaysia: Human rights agenda for new government

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL PUBLIC STATEMENT

As Najib Tun Razak prepares to take over as Prime Minister of Malaysia, Amnesty International said that the new administration faces major human rights challenges that need to be addressed.

The organization is calling on the new Prime Minister to initiate urgent reforms to the justice system in five key areas, as follows.

Arbitrary arrest and detention

The government must reform or repeal laws providing for arbitrary arrest and detention without trial, including the Internal Security Act (ISA).

As part of this reform, the government should release five supporters of the Hindu Rights Action Force (HINDRAF) who have been detained for over a year under the Internal Security Act (ISA) for organizing a demonstration highlighting the marginalization of ethnic Indians.

Freedom of expression

The new government should prioritize the removal of restrictions on freedom of expression affecting bloggers, opposition politicians and human rights activists.

There was a nationwide swoop on bloggers in March when eight bloggers were charged with posting critical comments against the Sultan of Perak. They were charged under the Communication and Media Act and released on bail. The charges against them should be dropped.

The death penalty

The death penalty is imposed for a number of offences in Malaysia. Drug trafficking, murder and unauthorized firearms possession carry a mandatory death sentence. The government does not publish statistics on executions.

A moratorium on the death penalty should be announced, with a view towards abolishing it. The government should also lift the veil of secrecy around the death penalty by publicizing all information about its current application.

Torture, ill-treatment and deaths in police custody

Torture and other ill-treatment at the hands of the police continue to be reported in Malaysia.

The family and lawyers of robbery suspect Kugan Ananthan, 22, who died in police custody that month, saw extensive marks of physical abuse covering his body. The investigations into the death have not progressed since the findings of the second autopsy report were submitted to the Attorney General's Office. Amnesty calls on the government to initiate an impartial, effective, independent, and prompt investigation into Kugan's death. Moreover, the government should establish an independent and impartial police oversight body to hear complaints about the police.

Migrant and refugee rights

Migrant workers, refugees and asylum seekers are at risk of deportation after harsh treatment in detention camps. Malaysia does not recognise their rights under international law, and even individuals recognised as refugees by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees are being arrested by untrained volunteers from the Peoples Volunteer Corps (RELA). Amnesty International urges the government to ratify the UN Convention relating to the Status of Refugees, its 1967 Protocol and the 1990 International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families.

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is scheduled to be sworn in as Prime Minister on Friday before the Yang di Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin at Istana Negara.

The King had consented to the appointment of Najib as the sixth Prime Minister of Malaysia, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Sidek Hassan had said.

He said in a statement Thursday that Najib would be presented his letter of appointment as Prime Minister and would take his oath of office, loyalty and confidentiality before the King at Istana Negara.

On Thursday, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi sought an audience with Tuanku Mizan where he conveyed his intention to relinquish the Prime Minister’s post and sought the King’s consent for Najib to become the next Prime Minister.

Najib Sworn-in As Prime Minister

Datuk Seri Najib Tun RazakKUALA LUMPUR, April 3 (Bernama) -- Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak was sworn in as Malaysia's sixth prime minister today, taking over from Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi who stepped down after leading the country for over five years.

Najib 55, took his oath of office before Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin at Istana Negara.

Dressed in a black baju Melayu complete with sampin, Najib arrived at the palace at 9.42am, accompanied by his wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor. Together they entered the Balairong Seri at 10am, followed by Abdullah and his wife, Datin Seri Jeanne Abdullah.

The dignitaries present included cabinet ministers, menteris besar, the Dewan Negara president and the Dewan Rakyat speaker.

A total of 319 guests, including former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, attended the historic event.

The ceremony, steeped in tradition, began when Tuanku Mizan and Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Zahirah entered the throne room at 10.05am and the national anthem was played by the Malaysian Armed Forces band.

After taking his oaths of office, loyalty and confidentiality, Najib signed the four instruments of appointment, followed by the reading of the doa selamat.

The instruments of appointment were then signed by Court of Appeal President Tan Sri Alauddin Mohd Sheriff as witness and handed over to Chief Secretary to the Government, Tan Sri Mohd Sidek Hassan.

At the same ceremony, Abdullah and Jeanne were conferred the nation's highest award, the Seri Maharaja Mangku Negara (SMN), which carries the title "Tun", by Tuanku Mizan.

Najib was born in Kuala Lipis, Pahang, on July 23, 1953, and is the eldest son of the late Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, the nation's second prime minister, and Tun Hajah Rahah Mohd Noah.

His appointment is most significant in the country's history in that this is the first time that a prime minister's son is holding the post.

His leadership capability began to surface when he was elected Pekan Umno division Youth head in 1976 and he went on to become the country's youngest Member of Parliament at the age of 22 when he won the Pekan seat unopposed in a by-election following his father's death.

He then went from strength to strength in politics and government to reach the pinnacle as Umno president and Malaysia's prime minister.

SJKT Tok Pawang Dapat Tanah Selepas 22 Tahun

Bedong , Kedah- YAB Dato Seri Menteri Besar Menteri Besar Kedah menghadiahkan Tanah seluas 5.5 Ekar kepada SJK (T) Sg Tok Pawang dalam suatu upacara ringkas di sini pada 2 Apr 2009.

Semasa berucap sebelum ucapara pecah tanah, beliau memberitahu bahawa Kerajaan Pakatan Rakyat Negeri Kedah memberikan tanah tersebut tanpa sebarang Caj Premium. Pihak Sekolah hanya perlu membayar Token RM10.00 manakala tidak perlu membayar sebarang Cukai Tanah.

Murid-murid SJKT Sg Tok Pawang kini berkongsi Sekolah dengan Sekolah Kebangsaan Sg Tok Pawang yang terletak bersebelahan tanah lapang di peruntukkan oleh Kerajaan Negeri. SJKT Sg Tok Pawang diasaskan pada tahun 1935 dengan hanya 20 orang murid dan seorang guru. Pada tahun 1940 , bilangan murid bertambah kepada 50 orang dengan lima buah bilik darjah. Sekolah tersebut di tutup sewaktu peperangan dunia kedua.

Pada tahun 1964, YB Tan Sri V Manickavasagam memperuntukkan RM6000 untuk mendirikan bangunan tambahan. Pada tahun 1996 , sebuah bangunan yang merupakan rumah-rumah pekerja ladang yang dibina pada 1953 di ubahsuai menjadi bilik-bilik darjah dengan hampir 220 orang murid.

Sejak tahun 1986 ,SJKT Sg Tok Pawang menumpnag di Sekolah Kebangsaan sg tok Pawang atas sebab pencemaran alam sekitar kawasan sekolah.

Akhirnya , atas usaha pihak sekolah dengan usaha murni Kerajaan Pakatan Rakyat Negeri Kedah , sekolah tersebut mendapat Tanah seluas 5.5 Ekar pada hari ini.

YAB Dato Seri Menteri Besar berkata, Kerajaan Negeri telah menjalankan tugas mereka dengan jayanya, kini terpulang kepada pihak sekolah untuk berunding mendapatkan peruntukkan RM1.6 juta bagi membina bangunan Sekolah tersebut daripada Kementerian Pelajaran Malaysia.

Saya dapat terharu dan perihatin kepada pelajar-pelajar baik yang lepas dan kini yang terpaksa menumpang bilik darjah mereka selama hampir 22 Tahun.

Mukhriz: Dr M to rejoin Umno in a day or two

SUNGAI PETANI, April 2 — Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will rejoin Umno in a day or two, his son Datuk Mukhriz said today.

Mukhriz, the Jerlun member of Parliament, said his father would campaign in the Bukit Selambau and Bukit Gantang by-elections.

He added that Dr Mahathir’s return to the party was the most important thing for him now.

“The most important thing for me is Tun Dr Mahathir’s return to Umno and this will become a reality in a day or two,” he told reporters after visiting the Taman Joget homestay.

Dr Mahathir quit the party in May last year, citing as reason his lack of confidence in the party’s leadership.

Meanwhile, Mukhriz said his defeat in the contest for the Umno Youth chief’s post in the movement’s recent elections had not dampened his spirit to contribute to the party.

He said that his “dare to change” slogan had been well-received by party members and this had contributed to the leadership change between Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Datuk Seri Najib Razak, as well as changes in party leadership, including the election of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as the deputy president.

Meanwhile, Mukhriz said that he was prepared to accept any responsibility given by Najib, who is scheduled to take his oath of office as the new prime minister tomorrow, succeeding Abdullah.

“If he feels that I can contribute, I’m willing to accept any responsibility given to me,” he said. — Bernama

TV3 DAN UTUSAN MALAYSIA BUAT LAPORAN PUTAR BELIT KES BEKAS TIGA ADUN V SIVAKUMAR

Laporan Buletin Utama TV3 semalam ( 1/4/2009 ) dan laporan akhbar Utusan Malaysia hari ini ( 2/4/2009 ) mengenai keputusan Mahkamah Tinggi Ipoh menolak permohonan Speaker Dewan Undangan Negeri (DUN) Perak, V. Sivakumar untuk membatalkan saman terhadapnya oleh tiga Ahli Dewan Undangan Negeri (ADUN) Bebas tidak menggambarkan keputusan sebenar Mahkamah Tinggi tersebut.

Utusan Malaysia melaporkan hari ini ( 2/4/2009 ) seperti berikut:-

“ IPOH 1 April - Mahkamah Tinggi di sini hari ini menolak permohonan Speaker Dewan Undangan Negeri (DUN) Perak, V. Sivakumar untuk membatalkan saman terhadapnya oleh tiga Ahli Dewan Undangan Negeri (ADUN) Bebas.

Keputusan ini secara tidak langsung membolehkan ketiga-tiga ADUN Bebas iaitu Jamaluddin Mohd. Radzi (Behrang), Kapt. (B) Mohd. Osman Jailu (Changkat Jering) dan Hee Yit Foong (Jelapang) kekal sebagai wakil rakyat dan kerusi bagi DUN berkenaan tidak kosong.”

Laporan utusan di atas khususnya perenggan yang menyatakan “ keputusan ini secara tidak langsung membolehkan ketiga-tiga ADUN Bebas iaitu Jamaluddin Mohd. Radzi (Behrang), Kapt. (B) Mohd. Osman Jailu (Changkat Jering) dan Hee Yit Foong (Jelapang) kekal sebagai wakil rakyat dan kerusi bagi DUN berkenaan tidak kosong” adalah satu laporan yang amat mengelirukan dan boleh dibaca sebagai laporan yang mala fide ( berniat jahat ) di atas alasan –alasan berikut :-

1. Mahkamah Tinggi Ipoh HANYA menolak permohonan Sivakumar bagi membatalkan saman pemula yang difailkan oleh ketiga-tiga “ADUN” tersebut ke atas beliau.

2. Keputusan Mahkamah Tinggi menolak permohonan Sivakumar tidak bermakna Mahkamah mengisytiharkan ketiga-tiga “ADUN” Bebas iaitu Jamaluddin Mohd. Radzi (Behrang), Kapt. (B) Mohd. Osman Jailu (Changkat Jering) dan Hee Yit Foong (Jelapang) kekal sebagai wakil rakyat dan kerusi bagi DUN berkenaan tidak kosong kerana isu tersebut belum didengar dan diputuskan oleh Mahkamah.

3. Apabila Hakim mendengar mana-mana permohonan untuk membatalkan Saman ( sama ada Writ Saman atau Saman Pemula - dalam kes ini ianya adalah Saman Pemula ) yang mana permohonan tersebut dibuat di bawah Aturan 18 Kaedah 19 Kaedah-Kaedah Mahkamah Tinggi 1980 ( juga dikenali sebagai permohonan “to strike out pleading” ) , Hakim hanya memutuskan permohonan tersebut sahaja . Ini bermakna di dalam kes di Ipoh tersebut hakim hanya memutuskan sama ada membenarkan permohonan Sivakumar atau menolak permohonan Sivakumar bagi membatalkan Saman Pemula ketiga-tiga “Adun tersebut”.

4. Di dalam kes ini Mahkamah memerintahkan permohonan Sivakumar bagi membatalkan Saman Pemula ketiga-tiga “Adun tersebut” ditolak. Itu sahaja perintah yang Mahkamah berikan. Tiada perintah lain diberikan oleh Mahkamah Tinggi Ipoh.

5. Selepas Mahkamah memerintahkan permohonan Sivakumar bagi membatalkan Saman Pemula ketiga-tiga “Adun tersebut” ditolak , Mahkamah yang sama telah menetapkan untuk meneruskan pendengaran Saman Pemula yang difailkan oleh ketiga-tiga “ ADUN” bebas tersebut dan tarikh pendengaran Saman Pemula telah ditetapkan pada 8 hb April 2009 ini.

6. Selagi Mahkamah belum mendengar dan memutuskan isu yang dibangkitkan di Saman Pemula yang difailkan oleh ketiga-tiga “ADUN” tersebut , ketiga-tiga mereka belum boleh dikatakan sebagai wakil rakyat yang sah dan kerusi mereka juga tidak boleh dikatakan tidak kosong sepertimana yang dilaporkan oleh TV3 dan Utusan Malaysia.

7. Pasukan Peguam Sivakumar telah memutuskan untuk memfailkan rayuan ke atas keputusan Mahkamah Tinggi Ipoh tersebut dan terdapat kemungkinan besar keputusan Mahkamah Tinggi Ipoh tersebut akan diketepikan oleh Mahkamah Rayuan kelak sepertimana Mahkamah Rayuan mengenepikan keputusan Hakim Mahkamah Tinggi Ipoh Dato’ Ridzuan yang melarang Sivakumar diwakili oleh peguam.

Saya harap penjelasan di atas dapat sedikit sebanyak membetulkan salah faham para pembaca di atas laporan putar belit TV3 dan Utusan Malaysia di atas.

Hindraf coordinator states condition for support

(Bernama) — Hindraf national coordinator R. Thanenthiran today expressed his support for any candidate in the Bukit Selambau state by-election in Kedah who is determined to raise the living standard of people regardless of race.

He said the support was not confined to any independent candidate or the Parti Keadilan Rakyat candidate but also encompassed the Barisan Nasional candidate.

Fifteen people are contesting in the Bukit Selambau by-election on Tuesday, and they comprise Datuk S. Ganesan of the BN, S. Manikumar of PKR and 13 independents.

Thanenthiran told reporters he did not know the PKR candidate though the latter claimed to be a member of Hindraf, the Hindu Rights Action Force, but added that he knew the BN candidate.

He also said that he welcomed the change in BN, with Umno deputy president and International Trade and Industry Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin presenting financial aid for the development of Tamil schools.

“This is an effort to restore the confidence of the people in the BN leadership, and we welcome this,” he said.

On another matter, Thanenthiran denied having received money to pay his hospital bill from MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu when the latter called on him recently.

He said he paid his own hospital bill. He also said that he never stopped any leader who wanted to visit him in hospital.

A true Muslim must oppose the Ruler

Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin urged Bukit Gantang voters to 'behead' PAS's Datuk Seri Nizar Jamaluddin by not voting for him in the upcoming by-election. Muhyiddin, who is the Barisan Nasional election director, said the country is witnessing an unprecedented development where the decision of a Malay Ruler was being questioned by the people.

"Because of this act of treason against the Ruler, what they are doing is a despicable act. How can a mentri besar, a PAS leader, a Muslim who wishes to turn this country into an Islamic state say 'Saya mohon derhaka' (I beg to differ)," he said repeating the line used by Nizar when he disagreed with the Perak Sultan.

"In the old days what do you think the punishment would have been?" he asked the crowd to shouts of 'pancung' (decapitation).

"We behead him by not electing him, not behead like in the old days," said Muhyiddin.

Imam Malik

Like all scholars of Islam, Malik was famous for his piety and integrity. He courageously stood up against the powers-that-be and was prepared to suffer for his convictions. When the Governor of Medina demanded that the people take the oath of allegiance to Caliph al-Mansour, Imam Malik issued a fatwa that such an oath was not binding because it was given under coercion. This resulted in many people finding the courage to express their opposition to the Caliph. Imam Malik was arrested, found guilty of defiance, and publicly flogged.

Imam Abu Hanifah

Imam Abu Hanifah was the first of the Imams to advocate the use of ‘reason’ in the consideration of religious questions based on the Qur'an and Sunnah. He was also the first Imam to systematically arrange all the subjects of Islamic Law. His most important work is the Kitab-ul-Aasaar, which was compiled by his students - Imam Abu Yusuf and Imam Muhammad. In 763, Al-Mansoor - the Banu Abbas Caliph of the Muslim Empire at Baghdad - offered Imam Abu Hanifah the post of Chief Qazi of the state. The Imam, however, declined to accept the post and chose to remain independent. In his reply to the Caliph, the Imam said he did not regard himself fit for the post offered. The Caliph, who had his own ideas and reasons for offering the post, lost his temper and accused the Imam of lying.

"If I am lying," the Imam said, "then my statement is doubly correct. How can you appoint a liar to the exalted post of a Chief Qazi?" Incensed by this reply, the Caliph charged the Imam with contempt and ordered him arrested and sent to prison where he was poisoned and died.

Imam Ali ibn Abu Talib

Assassinated by Abd-al-Rahman ibn Muljam, a Kharijite in Kufa, who slashed him with a poisoned sword while he was praying. Buried at the Imam Ali Mosque in Najaf, Iraq.

Imam Hasan ibn Ali

Poisoned by his wife in Medina, Saudi Arabia, on the orders of the Caliph Muawiya. Buried in Jannat al-Baqi.

Imam Husayn ibn Ali

Most of the renowned Imams in Islam opposed the Rulers, as did most of the Prophets of Islam. For that matter, according to the Muslim belief, God ordered Prophet Muhammad to leave Mekah and seek refuge in Medina because the powers-that-be was plotting to assassinate him.

Prophet Muhammad’s migration from Mekah to Medina is known as the Hijrah and is the beginning of the Muslim Hijrah calendar. That is how important the Hijrah is to Muslims. The Hijrah was, in a sense, the beginning of time. And it was all because Prophet Muhammad had opposed the Rulers of Mekah.

What has Prophet Muhammad and the other Prophets of Islam, as well as the many renowned Imams, taught us? They taught us one thing. And that is a good Muslim must oppose the Ruler, unless of course that Ruler deserves obedience. But then, through the ages, which Ruler has deserved obedience, if we believe what history says? It appears like almost all the Prophets as well as the Imams have had to oppose the Rulers. And many paid for it with their lives.

So what is Muhyiddin Yassin talking about? So he wants the people (voters) to behead (pancung) Nizar for opposing the Sultan of Perak? So what is new? All the great Prophets and Imams of Islam too opposed their Pharaohs, Emperors, Kings, Caliphs, Sultans, Governors, etc. And many died for that, died at the hands of these Rulers. That just makes Nizar a great man, as great as the many Imams of Islam who also opposed their Rulers and paid dearly for it.

I say the Perak voters, in particular those in Bukit Gantang, should ‘punish’ Nizar by sending him into exile. Nizar opposed the Sultan, so he should be punished. And he should be punished by being sent into exile to Kuala Lumpur. And the only way to do this would be to vote for him and make him the Member of Parliament for Bukit Gantang so that he will have to spend all his time in Parliament in Kuala Lumpur.

That is the most befitting punishment for Nizar.

ABDULLAH AHMAD BADAWI HANDS RESIGNATION TO YANG DIPERTUAN AGONG TODAY

Outgoing Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi formally submitted his resignation as announced today at 10am to the Yang DiPertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin during a scheduled hour-long audience.

It was further reported that the it is now up to the Yang DiPertuan Agong to accept the resignation and appoint his successor, Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Razak, a transition agreed upon by Datuk Seri Abdullah and Datuk Seri Najib of the Barisan Nasional coalition.

It was further understood that Datuk Seri Abdullah would be conferred a 'Tun' title after the new prime minister is sweared in, in recognition for his service to the nation.

It was seen that Datuk Seri Najib had an audience with the Yang DiPertuan Agong after PM Datuk Seri Abdullah and while leaving the palace at 12.15pm, Datuk Seri Najib was smiling and waving at the waiting crowd, but mentioned nothing.

It was learned that SMSes have been distributed to Cabinet Members and Dignatories that a swearing-in ceremony has been arranged for 10am tomorrow, but so far no official word have been issued by the Palace.

If the swearing-in ceremony takes place, Datuk Seri Najib would be sworn in as the 6th Prime Minister of Malaysia.

Datuk Seri Najib seems to be linked to the controversial murder of Mongolian national, Altantuya Shaariibuu which has recently hit foreign press which indirectly discredits his credibility and reputation. The Opposition is requesting for a Royal Commission of Inquiry be established to investigate and clear Datuk Seri Najib's name before he is appointed Malaysian Prime Minister.

Kit Siang: Najib should clear his name first

Never before has a premier designate’s credibility to assume the country’s top job has come under such intense public scrutiny as in the case of Najib Abdul Razak.

Veteran opposition parliamentarian Lim Kit Siang said Najib therefore should first address the unprecedented phenomenon of Malaysians doubting his integrity in taking over the premiership.

“Najib must first come out clean from all the public accusations and allegations against him before assuming the country’s top job.

“He cannot assume the premiership with a tainted character and frail credibility. He must first clear his name,” said Lim in his Bukit Selambau by-election campaign speech at a rally in Sungai Petani last night.

The DAP supremo opined that it would be “morally and politically incorrect” for Najib to become the country’s sixth prime minister tomorrow when the jury was still out on whether the newly-elected Umno president was the ‘right man’ to helm Putrajaya.

“Never before so many questions were raised on the suitability, legitimacy and integrity of a politician prior to his appointment as prime minister,” said Lim, who had been a parliamentarian since the days of the country’s first premier Tunku Abdul Rahman.

The Ipoh Timur MP suggested that Najib should clean all the ‘skeletons in the cabinet’ by clearing his name on a number of scandals.

Lim pointed out Najib has been under siege with several damaging accusations such as his alleged link with slain Mongolian woman Altantuya Shaariibuu, the subsequent mysterious disappearance of a private investigator P Balasubramaniam and the RM500 million commission payout to a company belonging to his close confidant in the purchase French submarines.

He called for a royal commission to probe into all these allegations to clear the way for Najib to take over the premiership.

Mahathirism making a comeback

Lim also warned Malaysians that Najib’s imminent premiership tenure would mark the return of ‘Mahathirism’, a reflection of the hardline administration of former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

According to the DAP leader, the coup d’etat in Perak, sedition charge against party colleague Karpal Singh and the police ban on Pakatan Rakyat leaders from bringing up the Altantuya case in the by-elections were among the signs that ‘Mahathirism’ is making a comeback.

“This is dangerous and must stopped. Voters in Bukit Selambau, Bukit Gantang and Batang Ai have a national duty to send a message that they reject Mahathirism,” said Lim.

He also questioned the suitability and credibility of former Umno vice-president Mohd Ali Rustam as the Malacca chief minister given that he had been barred from contesting in the recent party elections due to allegations of vote-buying.

“How could he continue to helm the state government when he had been banned from his own party for alleged corrupt practices?” he asked.

The veteran politician also predicted that Najib’s era would mark the beginning of the end to Barisan Nasional’s political dominance.

“Pakatan will form the federal government in the next general election,” he thumped home to cheers of some 2,000 people.

Money for Tamil schools not a gimmick: Najib

PUTRAJAYA (April 1, 2009) The Sun: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak today distributed an RM80 million assistance package to Tamil schools, saying that it was not an by-election gimmick as it had been announced much earlier.

"Whatever we do, they will question. But this is as good as any other time. This is the actual giving out, the announcements were made much earlier before we knew about the by-elections," said Najib, who spoke at a press conference after giving out the allocation which will benefit 374 Tamil schools from eight states and Kuala Lumpur.

The RM80 million, of which RM50 million comes from the first stimulus package and the rest from the Ministry of Finance allocation, was distributed as follows:

When asked to reveal his economic plans once he takes over as prime minister reportedly on Friday, Najib reiterated that he did not wish to talk about this at this juncture and told the public to wait for official announcements.

He said he will make a statement on Friday and "subsequently I will reveal more as time goes by".

"It will be about the economy, politics and the direction that the government is going to take," said Najib, who explained that he was refraining from commenting on this out of respect for the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

"I have not had an audience with the King yet. Hopefully, the King will graciously give his consent," said Najib.

To a question, he said he will not be bringing any potential cabinet list with him when he sees the King.

Najib said that his One Malaysia Concept will be his platform when he becomes prime minister.

On the two characteristics of the concept, he said they are respect and mutual trust.

"We practice national unity by beginning with an attitude of mutual respect. When we have mutual respect, it means we have an open mind to accept unity in diversity," said Najib.

"The second principle is mutual trust. You have to develop the trust. It won’t happen overnight, it has to be consciously developed in an organised manner."

King consents to Najib's appointment

PUTRAJAYA, 2 April 2009: Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin has consented to the appointment of Datuk Seri Najib Razak as the sixth prime minister of Malaysia, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Sidek Hassan announced today.

He said in a statement that Najib would be presented his letter of appointment as prime minister and would take his oath of office, loyalty and confidentiality before the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at Istana Negara at 10am tomorrow.

This morning, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi had an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to hand over the letter relinquishing the post of prime minister in accordance with the agreed transition of power from him to Najib.

Najib, who succeeded Abdullah as the Umno president at the party general assembly last week, also had an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at Istana Negara today.

Abdullah was appointed the fifth prime minister of Malaysia on 30 Oct 2003, having succeeded Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. — Bernama

Nizar's leave application: decision tomorrow

KUALA LUMPUR, 2 April 2009: The High Court will decide tomorrow on a leave application filed by former Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin who is challenging the appointment of his successor by the Sultan of Perak.

Justice Datuk Aziz Abdul Rahim fixed the date after hearing submissions from Senior Federal Council Datuk Kamaluddin Md Said who is representing the Attorney-General's office and Nizar's counsel Sulaiman Abdullah.

Kamaluddin objected to the leave application by arguing that Nizar's application was frivolous, vexatious and abuse of the process of the court since the appointment of Datuk Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir was made by the Sultan, which is non-justiciable under the state constitution.

"Since it is the royal prerogative of the Sultan, the said decision is not justiciable and is not susceptible for judicial review by this court," said Kamaluddin.

He said the AG's office opposed the leave application on grounds that the applicant had employed the wrong mode of proceedings under the Rules of the High Court 1980.

Kamaluddin pointed out that Order 53 rule 2(4) had clearly stated that any person who is adversely affected by the decision of any public authority shall be entitled to make the application.

He said in this proceeding, the respondent (Zambry) was an individual and he was named personally, where in fact, he was not a public authority within the ambit of Order 53.

"It is clear that the applicant in the present case cannot institute judicial review proceedings against the respondent as the latter is not a public authority," he said.

Kamaluddin concluded his submission by stressing that ruler of a state is a public authority and he has sovereignty and prerogative to appoint the respondent as Menteri Besar and therefore cannot be sued or challenged in civil court.

On 13 Feb Nizar filed the application challenging the legitimacy on the appointment of Zambry and the new state government.

He is also seeking a declaration that he is the rightful Menteri Besar of Perak and an injunction to stop Zambry from discharging his duties as the Menteri Besar.

Sulaiman in his reply pointed out that the judidial review application was not against the Sultan.

"Both appointees are lawfully entitled to seek the court's assistance to clarify the correct legal position, the appointing authority need not to be involved in the dispute," he said.

Sulaiman pointed out that while the applicant was still in office, the respondent could not also claim to be the rightful Menteri Besar.

"There cannot be two persons occupying one office of the Menteri Besar," added Sulaiman.

He said the applicant had been adversely affected by the unlawful actions of the respondent, and he had a legal right as well as sufficient interest to bring the judicial review application.

Sulaiman said the court was duty-bound to correct and clarify the legal position in this dispute by granting leave to proceed with the judicial review proceedings.

Bkt Selambau: MIC pulling out all the stops

On the ground it’s all out for PR. We see people of all races helping PR candidate win the election. This is history. Pas is giving undivided support to ensure victory for PR candidate. Malays, Chinese and Indians are carrying flags in support of Manikumar. Seemingly, all races are seen united for a common cause. When asked a Malay shopkeeper he said, “Kita tak kisah Melayu, India atau Cina. Kita mahu keadilan untuk semua. MB kami orang baik. Calon PR pun orang baik.”

Looks like the independents are not getting much support. An Indian professional quipped in Malay, “Kacau punya orang. Kita mahu satu orang saja. Ini Mani (Manikumar) baik punya orang. Kita mahu dia dalam kerajaan.”

Unfortunately, BN candidate is not getting much support. Out of 10 people interviewed, eight were not happy with him winning the by-election. Neither are BN component parties aggressively campaiging for him. In contrast, PKR supporters are seen all out to ensure a big win for its candidate.

While I was in town, I noticed quite a few of his campaign workers plastering his posters with the aeroplane logo all over the place. But my contact tells me it is R Loganathan who commands a sizeable following among the independents.

The presence of these independent candidates has got the PKR campaigners a little worried about the votes being split. They are also worried that the BN will pull off a last-minute surprise to win votes. A few are speculating that several of the Hindraf detainees could be released soon.

PKR campaigners may have a few surprises up their sleeves as well. The Kugan custodial death issue could be highlighted in the campaign over the next few days.

1400: Back in Bukit Selambau again. It’s turning out to be a close contest here, according to a PKR ops centre chief. He says he expects a tough fight, with the PKR candidate possibly winning by a few hundred votes.

Although the rural voters appear to be leaning towards the PKR, the BN has been working hard on the ground to win back lost support. For example, an eye-witness told me Muhyiddin presented a mock cheque for RM350,000 to the Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (T) Sungai Tukang for renovation work, the funds said to be coming from the second stimulus plan. About 50 people - 10 parents, a few teachers and MIC members - were there to witness the handover. The MIC candidate and Education Department officials were also present.

From what I hear, Samy Vellu seems to be getting a mixed reception.

Meanwhile, Pas has been working hard for the PKR candidate. Apparently, they have been going house to house to canvass for votes.

A media source tells me the name “Datuk Ravi” keeps cropping up in conversations with PKR party workers as someone who has some influence in PKR decision making pertaining to Indian Malaysians. Remember that name.

Acara Kempen di Rumah Panjang Nanga Kesit

Pagi tadi sekitar jam 8.45, saya hadhir di sidang akhbar di Pasar Lubok Antu. Dalam menjawab soalan para wartawan, saya tegaskan bahawa perubahan mesti dilakukan demi rakyat Sarawak.

Seharusnya kita terkesan dengan keluhan tuai Rumah Panjang Nanga Kesit betapa mereka, meski pun menyokong kerajaan dipinggirkan sepanjang pemerintahan BN selama berpuluh tahun. Jelas, wujud ketempangan dari sudut dasar pentadbiran kerajaan negeri sedia ada.

Semalam, salepas berjemaah Maghrib di Masjid Kampung Melayu, Lubok Antu, saya dijamu dengan hidangan istimewa talapia Iban di Bedok Cafe.

Sebelum itu, kami berkunjung ka Rumah Panjang Nanga Kesit dan disambut olih Tuai Rumah Jampang. Acara dimeriahkan dengan persembahan tarian pahlawan Iban.

A Rakyat’s Open Plea to DYMM Yang diPertuan Agong - Save us from Najib

I suppose most think it is too late, and perhaps it is.

And yet, at the time of writing, there does not seem to be an official, confidence inspiring statement about a swearing-in ceremony tomorrow.

Thus, I have composed the following, borrowing the opening and ending language from a similar Pakatan letter. It is not my best piece of writing, but time runs short.

And if it amounts to naught, like my last letter to royalty, then so be it. But with so much at stake I shall refuse not to try whatever is within my feeble ability, and continue to live in hope that we may be spared the disaster of a Najib premiership.

Mengadap Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong

We beg Tuanku to take the following matters into consideration as Dato’ Seri Najib Tun Razak seeks to become Prime Minister.

In the weeks leading to his ascension to power, the government has demonstrated ever increasing repressive measures to silence all voices of legal, patriotic dissent.

The police have used tear gas and water cannons to attack peaceful citizens whose only crime was to gather and listen to alternative political views.

Newspapers have been shut down, and threats against online media have been made repeatedly. A fear exists that this clampdown will only worsen should Dato’ Seri Najib become Prime Minister.

Ampun Tuanku,

As Dato’ Seri Najib prepares to assume power, we see more and more proof of corruption in the ranks of the government he plans to lead.

His party has allowed the Chief Minister of Malacca to continue ruling the state even after being found guilty of money politics. This worrying trend suggests a return to the days where high officials can spent millions of ringgit belonging to the people on Disneyland trips.

Even as the rakyat struggles with an ever worsening economic crisis, Dato’ Seri Najib himself has yet to explain why excessive amounts of money was spent on arms purchases involving multi-million commissions to those closely associated with himself. His hand has also been seen in the federal government’s move to buy back Selangor’s privatised water concessions at vastly overpriced values, and plan to increase water tariffs to increase private profits at the expense of the rakyat.

A fear exists that this trend of corruption will only worsen should Dato’ Seri Najib become Prime Minister.

The already tarnished integrity of the judiciary has been worsening in these weeks leading to Dato’ Seri Najib’s planned ascension. To date, even such glaring cases of corruption such as the VK Lingam scandal have yet to be properly prosecuted.

In the recent Perak constitutional crisis, involving alleged threats and inducements which Dato’ Seri Najib himself is perceived to have played a pivotal role, judges have now been replaced with parachute candidates who have already begun ruling in favour of Dato’ Seri Najib’s political allies.

Similar tampering with the judiciary and switching of judicial personnel was also observed in the Altantuya Shaarriibuu murder case, which the whole world now perceives Dato’ Seri Najib to be involved in. His refusal to account for how his personal bodyguards participated in a murder for which they had no plausible motive continues to be a glowering blemish on his personal integrity as Prime Minister aspirant.

The public fails to believe that Dato’ Seri Najib is the man to lead a nation dealing with economic crises, corruption scandals at every level, and severe abuses of power by law enforcement agencies and personnel.

Malaysia needs a leader with a cleaner record of integrity, a leader free from the taint of any ill perception, to lead a united Malaysia in these dark times.

We pray Tuanku will choose such another individual to lead us until such a time as Dato’ Seri Najib may clear his name and demonstrate a more confidence inspiring aptitude. A nation surrounded by despair looks to Tuanku in hope.

MEMOHON PERKENAN UNTUK MENANGGUHKAN LANTIKAN PERDANA MENTERI BARU SEHINGGA NAMA BELIAU DIBERSIHKAN OLEH SURUHANJAYA BEBAS

Patik sekalian mewakili semua 81 Ahli Parlimen Pakatan Rakyat dengan penuh takzim ingin merafa’ sembah mengenai rancangan YAB Perdana Menteri untuk mengadap Seri Paduka Baginda pada 2 April ini bagi menyatakan hasrat meletakkan jawatan dan menyerahkan jawatan beliau kepada YAB Timbalan Perdana Menteri yang merupakan Presiden UMNO yang baru.

Jawatan Perdana Menteri ini merupakan suatu jawatan tertinggi dalam negara yang menjadi maruah sesebuah negara. Jawatan yang sebegitu penting seharusnya diberikan kepada individu terpilih yang bersih dan tidak dipersoalkan integritinya.

Baru-baru ini terdapat banyak skandal yang mengaitkan nama YAB Timbalan Perdana Menteri seperti komisyen pembelian kapal selam Scorpene yang melibatkan negara Peranchis. Yang paling mengejutkan adalah peristiwa pembunuhan seorang wanita Mongolia yang dikatakan turut mengaitkan nama beliau. Perkara di atas telah tersebar ke seluruh dunia dan diulas di banyak akhbar dan majalah seluruh dunia.

Oleh kerana perkara di atas begitu banyak diperkatakan dan memandangkan jawatan Perdana Menteri begitu penting buat negara ini, adalah amat wajar sekiranya Seri Paduka Bagida menangguhkan lantikan Perdana Menteri yang baru ini sehingga segala dakwaan berkenaan disiasat oleh sebuah Suruhanjaya Bebas dan nama beliau dibersihkan demi menjaga maruah negara ini.
