From Straits Times
LAWYERS for opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim yesterday sought to show that his accuser Saiful Bukhari Azlan had lied about whether the alleged sodomy was consensual.
Defence counsel Karpal Singh told the High Court that the lawyers would apply to impeach the star witness’ evidence if it was found that he had given contradictory statements.
He said this while asking the court to order the authorities to provide them with the statements that Mr Saiful had given to the police about the alleged sodomy.
‘We want all statements given by this witness,’ he said, contending that they may contradict the evidence Mr Saiful gave in court.
The alleged contradictions have to do with whether the alleged sodomy was consensual. Consensual and non-consensual sodomy are offences under Malaysian law, but carry different sentences.
The former is punishable by jail of up to 20 years, while the latter carries a jail term of between five and 20 years.
