Anwar wants the King to intervene in APCO row

By Asrul Hadi Abdullah Sani - The Malaysian Insider

KUALA LUMPUR, April 8 — Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today he has written to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to seek his intervention to get the Najib administration to cancel its contract with public relations firm APCO Worldwide because of its alleged links to Israel.

He said that in the letter sent this afternoon, he also requested the King to advise the government to cancel all contracts with companies which had links to Israel.

“I don’t see any way for Umno to get out of this mess. That is why today I have written to the King and to support the initiative of my colleagues, the PAS members of Parliament, to secure the good offices of the King and to advise the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to immediately cancel the contract involving APCO and all related Israeli intelligence interests,” he told reporters in Parliament.

PAS has sent a memorandum to the Conference of Rulers, urging it to order the government to cut its ties with APCO.

Anwar (picture) said it was vital that the government terminate its relationship with APCO and Asiasoft Malaysia because the two companies are a threat to national security.

Anwar had claimed yesterday that the government was infiltrated by Israeli intelligence working as contractors at the Bukit Aman federal police headquarters.

He claimed that the agents were working for Asiasoft Malaysia, a sub-contractor engaged by Master Plan Consulting Sdn Bhd, to perform an upgrade of communication systems for the police.

He said the country should not sell its “pride to the Israelis”.

“If we love our country, and we are supposedly Malays, then why should we sell our pride to the Israelis. We have provided evidence; name of the company, the owners, address and report made by the director of the Special Branch. So this is my answer to Tan Sri Musa Hassan so I hope that he can continue the investigation but it was halted and I do not know why,” he said.

Anwar added that he was ready to assist the police in their investigation.

He was responding to the challenge made by Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan to provide evidence on his allegation.

APCO Worldwide, the public relations consultancy engaged by the Najib administration, has been the target of attacks on the government by the opposition who claimed that the company had also advised the Israeli government.

Anwar has been referred to the parliamentary Rights and Privileges Committee and faces suspension for bringing up the allegation that APCO had Israeli links.
