Charged in contractors' murder case

JOHOR BARU: Two businessmen were charged at the magistrate's court yesterday in connection with the murder of two contractors in a high-profile payroll robbery-cum-murder in Nusajaya last month. Sanderan Rajagopal, 28, was charged with the murder of Vesvanathan Ramasamy, 43, and Saravan Manickam, 39, in Jalan Medini in Felcra Tebing Runtuh, Nusajaya at 3.30pm on Dec 2 last year.

He was also charged with causing mischief by fire or explosive substance with the intent to cause damage to a Toyota Corolla belonging to a Toh Wai Min.

The offence was allegedly committed at Km2 of Jalan Gelang Patah in Lima Kedai at 3.40pm the same day.

Karthiganeson Sangara- ringam, 28, was charged with abetting in the murders, along with Palpanavan Kunjappoo, 56, who was charged on Dec 16.

Magistrate Mohd Fuad Abdul Aziz fixed Feb 8 and 9 next year for hearing of the arson case, while the murder case will be transferred to the High Court.
Defence counsel G. Subramaniam Nair represented both accused while deputy public prosecutor Nor Azlina Azanuddin prosecuted.

It was reported that Vesvanathan, a managing director, and his manager, Saravan, both contractors of an infrastructure project in Iskandar Malaysia, were gunned down before the gunmen sped off with an undisclosed amount of cash, believed to be workers' payroll.

The getaway car was later found set ablaze in Lima Kedai.

Palpanavan's 45-year-old wife and his 27-year-old son, who were also detained by police, will be the prosecution's key witnesses.
