Noisy Show Of Support At Nomination Centre

PORT DICKSON, Oct 3 (Bernama) -- The nomination for the Bagan Pinang state by-election at the Port Dickson Municipal Council hall here Saturday was smooth despite a noisy show of support by supporters of contending candidates and several bottle-throwing incidents.

Despite the tensed atmosphere, no arrests were made, said police media officer Supt. R. Ravichandran.

"However, we had identified several supporters of political parties who brought along drums and party flags to the nomination centre," he told reporters after the nomination was over.

The police estimated about 10,000 supporters of Barisan Nasional (BN) and the opposition were present, he said.

BN candidates stayed on a hill top at Jalan Bukit with the opposition supporters were confined to the foothill.

A fight almost ensured when a handful of PAS supporters provoked BN supporters but timely intervention by the police saved the day.

Putera Umno Bureau chairman Datuk Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim claimed that an opposition supporter threw a punch at him as he walked towards the nomination centre.

His neck was slightly injured while Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Minister Datuk Ismail Sabri Yaacob had to be escorted by his bodyguards as several opposition supporters came towards him.

BN fielded former Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Tan Sri Mohd Isa Abdul Samad while PAS is represented by Zulkefly Mohamad Omar, the party's state commissioner. Polling is on Oct 11.
