Hindu temple to be built in Section 23 despite protests

2009/08/19 NST

SHAH ALAM: A Hindu temple will be built in Section 23 here despite protests from residents of the Malay-majority neighbourhood.

Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim said yesterday there were no plans to move the temple, which is being relocated from Section 19, to Section 22 instead or elsewhere.

"For the time being, we are proceeding with the plan and we will explain this to the Section 23 residents."

He said this at a press conference after addressing state employees at their monthly morning assembly here.

Khalid blamed the former state government for approving the construction of the temple in Section 19, which had led to the current relocation problem.

"Politically, the temple issue is the problem of the previous state government.

"The problem has existed since earlier and Pakatan Rakyat is solving this problem."

On Sunday, about 200 residents in Section 23 protested against the construction of the temple.

They demanded that the temple be built in Section 22, as was approved by the previous state government.
