Sirul Azhar Umar placed on Interpol red notice

Interpol has issued a red notice for Sirul Azhar Umar, who was sentenced to death for the murder of Mongolian translator Altantuya Shaariibuu.

A red notice signifies authorities are attempting to seek the location and arrest of wanted persons with a view to extradition or similar lawful action.

Sirul's name was placed on Interpol's website, alongside 37 other individuals sought by Malaysian authorities for a variety of crimes.

The 43-year-old former Special Action Unit corporal failed to turn up at the Federal Court last week, as he was believed to be in Australia.

Bernama reported that Sirul had left the country two months ago and did not have enough money to return to Malaysia.

The Federal Court allowed the government's appeal over the murder of Altantuya, which led to Sirul and Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri being sentenced to death.

Federal Court judge Suriyadi Halim Omar said the prosecution had proved its case to implicate the two with the charge that carried the death penalty.

"As such, the Court of Appeal was wrong in reversing the findings of the trial court to free them," said Suriyadi, who is a member of the five-man bench to hear the final appeal.

On August 23, 2013, the Court of Appeal allowed the appeals brought by Azilah and Sirul and acquitted them.

Prosecutor Tun Abdul Majid Tun Hamzah asked the court to issue a warrant of arrest for Sirul, which was granted.

Four years earlier, High Court judge Datuk Zaki Mohd Yassin had found the two guilty and sentenced them to death.

Evidence in court revealed that the Mongolian translator was either murdered by C4 explosives or killed first and the remains destroyed on October 18, 2006, in the outskirts of Shah Alam, near the capital city Kuala Lumpur.

Former political analyst Abdul Razak Baginda, a confidante of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, was charged with abetting Azilah and Sirul but was acquitted by the High Court in 2008 without defence called. The government did not appeal. – January 20, 2015.

‘Red Notice’ to Interpol to locate Sirul

KUALA LUMPUR: Police will issue a “Red Notice” to Interpol to help detect corporal Sirul Azhar, who has been sentenced to death for the murder of Mongolian model Altantuya Shaariibuu and an application for extradition will be made with the country concerned.

Sirul Azhar left for Australia in October last year and this has been confirmed by Kuala Lumpur CID chief Mohmad Salleh after checking the Malaysian Immigration Department records.

“To date, the Malaysian Immigration Department has confirmed that he went abroad to Australia. He went there in October last year.

“We will liaise with the Australian Federal Police if he is there, but if he has left for other destinations, we will liaise with Interpol to arrest him.

“We will definitely seek the cooperation of the international police,” he said when contacted by Bernama here today.

It is understood that the police would issue a ‘Red Notice’ to Interpol to help detect Sirul Azhar, and an application for the extradition will be made with the country concerned.

According to the portal of the Attorney-General’s Chambers, Malaysia has concluded treaties on extradition with six countries, including Australia.

Sirul Azhar, who is the second accused in the murder of the Mongolian woman, did not attend the Federal Court for sentencing yesterday, as he is abroad. The court issued a warrant of arrest against him.

Yesterday, the court sentenced Sirul Azhar and first accused chief inspector Azilah Hadri to death after finding them guilty of murdering Altantuya, nine years ago.

The Federal Court also unanimously set aside the decision of the Court of Appeal on August 23, 2013, which freed the duo.

The Federal Court found the Court of Appeal had made a mistake in its decision.

The High Court, prior to this, imposed the death sentence on Sirul Azhar and Azilah after they were found guilty of killing Altantuya.

Interpol roped in to track down Alvin and Ali

IGP seeks help of Interpol to arrest asylum seekers Alvin Tan and Ali Abdul Jalil.

KUALA LUMPUR: Inspector General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar has sought the help of Interpol to track down and arrest Alvin Tan and Ali Abdul Jalil who are both seeking asylum in the US and Sweden respectively.

According to a report on The Star Online, the IGP confirmed Bukit Aman had contacted Interpol to assist in arresting Tan and Ali who were wanted in Malaysia on various criminal charges.

While Tan had skipped bail and took off to the United States, Ali had fled to Sweden where he is working with a human rights group there to be granted political asylum. He already has a temporary working visa that allows him to find employment and earn his own living.

Khalid said, ”So we have to wait now. We have requested for a red notice through Interpol.”

Tan, 26, who gained notoriety for his sex blogs and for insulting Muslims during Ramadhan, is allegedly residing in California and claimed trial last year to three charges under the Film Censorship Act, Sedition Act and the Penal Code.

He has been increasingly vocal and vulgar in his comments on Facebook since of late, goading the IGP and heaping insults on local political leaders.

Ali on the other hand, slipped away to Sweden last week after being charged with sedition for allegedly insulting Johor royalty. He has claimed to being tortured while under detention.
