Where are the portraits of our founder, asks a DAP man, to which the party youth chief says DAP doesn't idolize anyone.

GEORGE TOWN: A former assemblyman has slammed the DAP leadership for not giving due recognition, respect and appreciation to party founder and inaugural secretary-general Devan Nair.
Former DAP Kota Alam Shah state representative from 2008 to 2013, M Manoharan, said many members wanted to know why the DAP had never put up the founder’s portrait in any of its offices and official websites.
He said the members also questioned on why there was never a single event organised to mark the birth or death, and contributions of Devan Nair to the party.
Manoharan said members were upset that the DAP had also never ever mentioned anything about Devan Nair in its official websites or party organ – The Roket.
DAP’s non-recognition of its own founder was pathetic and had prompted many members to ask if the party had ever walked its talk of practising multi-racial politics by being non-communal.
He also commented on Gerakan, which being a Chinese-dominant party, had the portrait of its founder president Syed Hussein Alatas in its offices until today.
“Even DAP national headquarters does not have a single portrait of Devan Nair. DAP leaders had never ever bothered to mention the founder’s name. There has not been a single word on him in DAP websites or in Roket.
“Why?” asked Manoharan, who is a candidate in the forthcoming party re-election on Sept 29.
He called on the DAP leadership to immediately put up Devan Nair’s portrait in its headquarters, offices at state, division and branch levels, and websites as well as claiming that the grassroots members were now demanding the party to give Devan Nair the due respect and recognition.
The late politician and trade unionist full name was Devan Nair Chengara Veetil (Aug 5 1923 – Dec 6 2005).
After establishing the DAP based on socialist ideals in 1965, the then Bangsar MP, Devan Nair held the position of party first secretary-general until 1968.
He left Malaysia for Singapore after the 1969 general election and went to become the island republic’s president.
Waiting for delegates’ list
On party polls, Manoharan claimed that the campaigns of most candidates including his, were handicapped by the party’s non-issuance of delegates’ list.
He is upset that some candidates linked to a powerful faction were having the upper hand by keeping the list with them while claiming that he had not received the list until today despite requesting for full details of the delegates in a letter dated Aug 27 to the party headquarters.
“In DAP, candidates were deprived of their rights to have details of delegates and to meet them all,” Manoharan told FMT.
According to him, members had complained that certain candidates had misused the list to know whom to meet while participating in the ongoing, “Dialogue on ROS” road shows across the country.
The road shows were supposedly to explain to all members on the Registrar of Societies’ directive to DAP to hold a re-election following its findings of irregularities in the party election held in Penang on Dec 15, last year.
“However, certain candidates are misusing these road shows for campaigning while refusing to issue the delegates’ list to many other candidates.
“They are misusing party machinery and government official cars for their campaign. They are abusing their positions,” Manoharan alleged.
DAP is set to hold its CEC re-election on Sept 29.
DAP does not put up portraits of leaders
Meanwhile in an immediate reaction, party youth chief Anthony Loke said DAP does not embrace the culture of putting up photographs of past leaders at its headquarters.
Loke, also the DAP parliamentary whip, rubbished claims that the party did not give due recognition to its founder Devan Nair and failed to put up the latter’s portrait in party offices.
“We don’t even have the current chairman’s portrait in the headquarters. We are a people’s movement, we don’t idolize anyone,” he told FMT at the sidelines of the Dewan Rakyat sitting today.
On Manoharan’s claim that he was denied the party’s delegates list despite being a candidate in the upcoming DAP re-elections on Sept 29, Loke contended that he has sent out emails to every candidate advising them to come to party headquarters to obtain the delegates list if they wanted to.
“It is the delegates list, we cannot give it to any Tom, Dick and Harry, they have to come themselves to get a copy of the list,” he said.
