A stand-off between a MIC division leader and branch chairman resulted in the AGM being called off.
PETALING JAYA: A MIC leader has lodged a police report against a division chairman for allegedly slapping him in front of the members during the branch’s annual general meeting at a restaurant here.
MIC Jalan Bukit 11/2 chairman R Krishnamoorthi claimed PJS Selatan division chairman V Subramaniam, also known as Barat Maniam, attended the AGM on Saturday along with returning officer K Viswalingam to oversee the proceedings of the meeting at Restoran Kampung Baiduri.
The branch, which was formed 20 years ago, is led by Krishnamoorthi and under the division headed by Barat Maniam
Krishnamoorthi said Barat Maniam entered the meeting room before the AGM and asked for the ICs of the members.
He told Barat Maniam that it was against the party constitution to request for identification cards.
He added that it was merely an AGM and there was no need for members to show their ICs.
Krishnamoorthi said the returning officer could only check the ICs during branch or division elections.
In his police report yesterday, Krishnamoorthi said Barat Maniam ordered the members to produce their ICs.
Krishnamoorthi said he was slapped when he prevented Barat Maniam from taking away his personal files.
“The returning officer put his hand on my neck and pushed me behind,” he said.
Krishnamoorthi said the situation became tense and some of his members joined in to stop the quarrel.
He said the behaviour of the Barat Maniam, who is a senator, was shocking as the division leader was not even invited to attend the AGM.
“I have reported this incident to party secretary-general, but until now there has been no response,” he added.
Krishnamoorthi said he received a notice from the secretary-general on Aug 28 urging him to call for an AGM.
Barat Maniam denied any such wrongdoings and said the quarrel erupted when Krishnamoorthi disallowed the request made by the returning officer to check the members’ ICs.
“I never laid my hand on him and it is Krishnamoorthi who was rude to us,” Barat Maniam told FMT.
Viswalingam has also lodged a police report against the branch leader.
