Khalid: Let Jais counsel convert first

The Selangor MB urges the state religious authority to counsel the illiterate mother who has been converted to Islam without her knowledge before making any decision.

BANGI: Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim has urged the state Islamic Religious Department (Jais) to provide counselling first before making a decision involving an illiterate mother who was converted to Islam without her knowledge.

“Everyone has the right to choose their religion and how they want to live their lives.

“So Jais has to advise, counsel and resolve the issue if the person wants to leave the religion,” Khalid said after attending a convocation ceremony at the National Islamic University College (Kuis).

Khalid was commenting on a recent report where Madinah Kanniammah Abdullah,54, who lives in Subang, claimed that she was converted to Islam by her lover 30 years ago, without her knowledge.

Madinah also decided not to get MyKads for four of her children, fearing they may be registered as Muslims.

As a result, two of her children may have to skip their PMR and SPM examinations as they do not have MyKads.

Khalid, who is also in charge of the state Islamic affairs portfolio, said Madinah might have to undergo a series of counselling sessions with Jais before any decision could be made.

“But I can’t elaborate further as I need more details,” he said.
